How Vrindavan celebrates Janmashtami

Janmashtami in Braj is the grandest night of the year. Devotees fast through the day and gather in the temples for the midnight hour, the Nishita, when Krishna is believed to have been born. At that moment the deity is bathed in a joyous abhishek of milk, curd, honey and more, conches sound and the temples erupt in song and dancing. Through the evening the temples are dressed in flowers and lights, with beautiful jhankis, tableaux of Krishna’s life. It is devotion at its most overwhelming and most joyful.

Nandotsav and Dahi Handi

The celebration does not end at midnight. The next day, Saturday 5 September, brings Nandotsav, the festival of Nanda, Krishna’s foster father, kept with special joy in Gokul, my birthplace, where his childhood was spent; sweets and gifts are showered in celebration of the newborn. The same day brings Dahi Handi, the lively contest where young men form human pyramids to break a high hung pot of curd, echoing the butter thieving pranks of the child Krishna.

The heart of Janmashtami is the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, the very birthplace, where the celebrations are vast and the security tight. Expect long queues, heavy security with no phones or bags at the main temples and slow roads; come with patience and devotion, not a tight schedule. The honest bit

An honest festival guide matters most when crowds are largest. Every darshan is free, even on Janmashtami; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass for Banke Bihari and touts are busiest at festival time.
