📌 QUICK ANSWER

Gokul is the village where baby Krishna was raised by Nanda and Yashoda after Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna. It sits a short drive southeast of Mathura and holds Nand Bhavan, the Gokulnath and Raja Thakur temples, Chaurasi Khamba and Brahmand Ghat. Quieter than Vrindavan, it gives calm, free darshan, and easily adds to a 2 or 3-day Braj trip.

I am Gurudutt, and I was born in Gokul, in Mahaban Bangar. When I take you to Gokul, I am not reading from a brochure, I am walking you through the lanes of my own childhood. This is the village where Krishna spent his earliest days, and it is still gentle, devotional and far less crowded than Vrindavan. Let me show you the real Gokul, where to go, what it means, and how to fold it into your Braj pilgrimage.

Why Gokul matters

After Krishna was born in the Mathura prison, his father Vasudeva carried him across the flooded Yamuna to safety. The home that received him was in Gokul, where Nanda and Yashoda raised him as their own. So while Mathura is the birthplace, Gokul is the cradle, the place of his infancy, his first steps, and the butter-stealing leelas that devotees love most.

This is an important distinction I explain to every guest. Mathura is birth, Gokul is infancy, and Vrindavan is the childhood and youth of the leelas. Pilgrims who understand this geography feel the whole story unfold across Braj instead of seeing temples at random. Gokul is chapter one of Krishna's life on earth.

Tip from Gurudutt: Visit Gokul before Vrindavan if your schedule allows. Following the story in order, birth in Mathura, infancy in Gokul, then the leelas in Vrindavan, turns a temple tour into a living journey through Krishna's life.

Experience My India's 2-Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour includes major temples, comfortable accommodation, AC transport, and hassle-free darshan, starting from ₹4,499 per person.

Gokul, Mahavan and Raval, explained

First-timers get confused by the names around here, so let me settle them plainly.

Gokul today refers to the riverside settlement by the Yamuna with its famous temples and ghats. Mahavan, also called Gokul Mahaban, is the older, adjoining area regarded by many as the original Gokul of Krishna's infancy, and it is where I was born, in Mahaban Bangar. The two sit side by side and are visited together. Raval is a nearby village honoured in one tradition as Radha's birthplace.

On Radha's birthplace I stay honest: tradition holds it as both Barsana and Raval, and I leave that as the two living traditions hold it, without choosing for you. When you visit, you are moving through a cluster of deeply connected sacred villages, not one single point on a map.

Planning to visit Barsana, Radha Rani's village? Experience My India offers detailed travel guides and tour packages covering Radha Rani Temple, Kirti Mandir, and nearby Braj attractions.

The main temples and ghats

Here are the places I take guests, each one carrying a piece of the story.

Nand Bhavan, the home of Nanda Baba, sits on a rise and is regarded as the house where Krishna was raised. Chaurasi Khamba, the temple of eighty-four pillars, is an ancient hall tied to the old Mahavan. Gokulnath Temple and Raja Thakur Temple are central to the Vallabh sampradaya worship that flourishes in Gokul. And Brahmand Ghat on the Yamuna is where, by tradition, mother Yashoda asked little Krishna to open his mouth and saw the entire universe within it.

The Yamuna here is revered, and I will tell you the truth as always, she is polluted in stretches, so take darshan at the ghat without drinking or bathing. Darshan at all these temples is free, and Gokul sees fewer touts than the busiest Vrindavan spots, though you should still be sensible and decide any offering in advance.

Tip from Gurudutt: Stand quietly at Brahmand Ghat for a few minutes. This is where Yashoda saw the cosmos in her child's mouth. It is one of the most moving spots in all of Braj, and most rushed tours skip it.

Not sure how many days to spend in Mathura and Vrindavan? Experience My India shares practical itineraries for 1, 2, and 3-day trips to help you plan your pilgrimage.

How to reach Gokul

Gokul lies a short drive southeast of Mathura along the Yamuna, so the easiest approach is from Mathura by car or auto. From Vrindavan it is a little further, since Vrindavan sits on the opposite side of Mathura, so allow more travel time if you base there.

Best time and festivals

The comfortable window for Gokul, as for all of Braj, is roughly October to March. Summers are very hot and the riverside offers little shade in the midday sun, so seniors especially should visit in the cooler hours.

Gokul comes alive at Janmashtami, and in particular the day after, often called Nanda Mahotsav or Gokulashtami, celebrating Krishna's arrival in Nanda's home. Krishna Janmashtami falls on 4 September in 2026, with many temples observing the following day, so Gokul is especially joyful and busy then. Annakut after Diwali and the spring colours of Holi also fill the village with devotion.

Tip from Gurudutt: If you want Gokul at its most alive, come for the Nanda Mahotsav celebrations around Janmashtami. If you want it calm and contemplative, choose any ordinary cool-season weekday morning.

Adding Gokul to your Braj trip

Gokul is a half-day, not a whole trip, and it pairs most naturally with Mathura since the two are close. On a two-day Braj plan, I often fold Gokul into the Mathura day. On a three-day plan, it sits comfortably alongside Govardhan and Barsana on the wider-Braj day, or with Mathura at the start.

For families and seniors, Gokul is a gift, because it is calmer than Vrindavan and the darshan is unhurried. Children enjoy the Brahmand Ghat story, and elders appreciate the gentler pace. It is one of the easiest, most rewarding additions to a Braj itinerary, and one of the most overlooked.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

Plenty of operators will drive you to Vrindavan and call it Braj. Here is honestly why pilgrims choose us for the fuller, truer journey.

Born in Gokul, literally. I was born here, in Mahaban Bangar. There is no guide who can speak about Gokul with more first-hand love, and no brochure that matches knowing the lanes from childhood.

The honesty moat. We will never sell you a fake darshan pass, invent a fee for free darshan, or dress up the Yamuna as something she is not. That honesty is the brand, and it is why families trust us with their elders.

The full story, in order. We route Braj as Krishna's life unfolded, Mathura, Gokul, Vrindavan, so your pilgrimage has meaning, not just stops.

Proven and local. Guiding since 2018, more than fifty thousand pilgrims hosted, a 4.5-star rating across 204 Google reviews, packages from ₹5,999 per person.

"We booked a 3-day Mathura Vrindavan Gokul package with Experience My India after reading Gurudutt Ji's article about Gokul. Honestly, the experience felt very personal because Gurudutt Ji himself was born in Mahaban Bangar and explained every place with real stories and emotions. Mathura Vrindavan Temples: the Complete Guide

Mathura and Vrindavan together hold thousands of temples, but a first visit really centres on a handful: Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat in Mathura, and Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, Radha Damodar, ISKCON, Prem Mandir, Nidhivan and Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan. Almost all darshan is free, the temples open in the morning and evening with a long midday break, and timing your visit around those windows matters more than anything else.

Krishna Janmabhoomi Mathura: Timings, Darshan and How to Visit

Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura is generally open early morning, closes around midday, and reopens in the afternoon until the evening, with timings that shift by season, tithi and festival. The single most important thing to know is the strict security: no phones, no bags and no electronics are allowed inside, so plan for that before you arrive. Darshan is free, and early mornings are the calmest time to come.

Braj 84 Kos Parikrama: A Born-Brajwasi Complete Guide

Quick answer: The Braj 84 Kos Parikrama, also called the Chaurasi Kos Yatra, is the sacred circumambulation of the entire Braj mandal, the land of Krishna's leelas. It is commonly described as roughly 250 to 300 km and traditionally walked over about a month, though families and seniors complete it by vehicle in a few days. It is free to undertake and darshan along the way costs nothing.
