What is Prem Mandir
Prem Mandir, the temple of divine love, is a grand white marble temple on the edge of Vrindavan, in the Raman Reti area. Though it is modern, opened in 2012, it has quickly become one of the most visited temples in Braj and one of the most photographed in India. By day its carved white marble gleams and by evening it is lit in changing colours while a musical fountain plays, drawing families, pilgrims and photographers alike. It is set in a large landscaped campus with gardens and depictions of the leelas, the divine pastimes, of Krishna and of Ram.
History, who built Prem Mandir
Prem Mandir was built by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, the founder of the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, a spiritual organisation devoted to Radha Krishna bhakti. Construction took several years and involved hundreds of artisans working the marble and the temple was inaugurated and opened to the public in 2012. It was conceived as a temple of divine love, prem, expressing the devotion at the heart of the Braj tradition and it stands today as one of Kripalu Ji Maharaj's most enduring works, alongside the organisation's other temples.
Architecture and what to see
Prem Mandir is built from white Italian marble, carved in fine detail, on a campus of about fifty four acres. The temple has two levels. On the ground level, the presiding deities are Radha Krishna, worshipped as Radha Govind. On the level above, Sita Ram are worshipped. Around the main shrine, the outer walls carry intricately carved depictions of the leelas, the divine pastimes, of Krishna and the surrounding gardens hold larger sculptural scenes.
What to look for as you walk around:
The carved leela panels, scenes such as the lifting of Govardhan, the subduing of the Kaliya serpent, the Jhulan swing, the Raas and the Chir Haran.
The garden depictions, larger tableaux of Krishna's pastimes set in the landscaped grounds.
The marble detail, the fine carving on the pillars, arches and domes, best appreciated slowly.
The two shrines, Radha Krishna below and Sita Ram above, each with its own darshan.
The evening light show
The evening light show is what most people come for. As dusk falls, the white marble of Prem Mandir is lit in a sequence of changing colours and a musical fountain plays in the grounds. The effect on the carved marble is beautiful and it is why the evening is the best time to visit. Because the show follows sunset, its timing shifts through the year, earlier in winter and later in summer. For the exact current time of the light show, see our Prem Mandir timing guide and reach a little before it begins to find a good spot, since there is limited seating and it can be crowded on weekends and holidays.
Timings and entry
Prem Mandir opens in the morning and again in the evening, with the light show in the evening after sunset. Because the exact hours and the light show time shift with the season and any weekly maintenance closure can change, I keep the exact times on one page that we update, rather than print times here that may go stale. See our Prem Mandir timing guide for the current morning, evening and light show timings, verified for the season.
Entry is free. There is no ticket, no entry fee and no VIP or special darshan pass. Anyone offering paid special entry is not official.
How to reach Prem Mandir
Prem Mandir is in the Raman Reti area of Vrindavan, easy to reach:
Within Vrindavan, it is a short auto or e-rickshaw ride from the town centre and from ISKCON.
From Mathura, it is about 12 to 15 km, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road.
Parking is available near the campus and unlike the inner lane temples, Prem Mandir is reached by road, so a car can drop you close.
For a car and driver to include Prem Mandir in your Vrindavan darshan, see our taxi service or the Mathura Vrindavan Tour Packages.
Nearby temples and places
Prem Mandir pairs naturally with the rest of a Vrindavan evening and day:
ISKCON Vrindavan, the Krishna Balaram Mandir, close by, for kirtan and the evening aarti.
Banke Bihari, the most beloved temple, in the inner lanes.
Nidhivan, the sacred grove, closed after dark.
Radha Raman and the Goswami temples, in the old town.
Many visitors take Banke Bihari and the inner temples earlier, then finish at Prem Mandir for the evening light show. For the full set, see our complete Mathura Vrindavan temples guide.
Tips from a local guide
Come in the evening for the light show, but arrive before it begins to find a spot.
Weekends and holidays are crowded, so a weekday evening is calmer.
Photography is allowed in the grounds and the lit marble is stunning, but follow the temple's rule inside the shrines.
Allow about an hour and a half, more if you want to see the light show and both shrines without rushing.
It is a walking visit around a large campus, so wear easy footwear and plan rest for seniors.
Honest truths before you go
Entry is free. There is no ticket and no VIP or special darshan pass at Prem Mandir.
The light show follows sunset, so its time changes through the year. Reconfirm on the timing guide.
It is a modern temple, opened in 2012, not an ancient one and that is part of its distinct appeal.
The campus is large and walked, so allow time and plan for the walking.
Darshan is free everywhere in Braj, so treat any paid special entry offer as a tout.
