What is Gokul and why is it special?

Gokul is the land of Krishna's infancy. When he was born in Kansa's prison in Mathura, Vasudeva carried the baby across the Yamuna in the storm to Gokul, where Yashoda and Nanda raised him in secret. So this is where the butter-thief leelas unfolded, the baby crawling in Nanda's courtyard, the universe glimpsed in his mouth, the slaying of the demoness Putana. To stand in Gokul is to stand in Krishna's childhood.

Its devotional heart today is the Gokulnath Temple of the Pushtimarg, the tradition of Vallabhacharya, which worships Krishna in his child form. Around it, in Mahavan or Old Gokul, lie Nanda's house and the ancient 84-pillar temple and along the river the sacred sands of Raman Reti.

Gokulnath Temple and the Pushtimarg

The Gokulnath Temple is one of the oldest and most important in Gokul, a central seat of Vallabhacharya's Pushtimarg, the path of grace, which worships Krishna as the beloved child in the mood of baby-leela. The deity is a black image of Gokulnathji, served with intricate shringar, daily aartis and devotional singing in the traditional Vaishnava manner and the temple is also a hub of Sanskrit learning. About five hundred years ago Vallabhacharya, searching for the lost Gokul, received a vision of the goddess Yamuna at nearby Thakurani Ghat that revealed the site and the sampradaya has flourished here since.

Nand Bhavan and Chaurasi Khamba in Mahavan

A little beyond Gokul lies Mahavan, Old Gokul, held to be Krishna's original home. Here stands the Chaurasi Khamba, the temple of eighty-four pillars, believed to be Nand Bhavan, the house of Nanda Maharaj where Krishna and Balaram were raised. Its carved sandstone pillars are ancient and tradition says the eighty-four pillars stand for the eighty-four lakh forms of birth, so that to see them is linked with liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Yogmaya, the divine energy, is worshipped here and Mahavan is also remembered as the site of the Putana leela.

A tip from Gurudutt: Do not rush Gokul as a single temple stop, it is a small dham with several threads and the joy is in walking them: Gokulnath for the darshan, Chaurasi Khamba in Mahavan for the ancient pillars and Raman Reti for the sands. At Raman Reti, do as the Brijwasis do and roll gently in the soft sand, it is an old gesture of humility and children love it. Try the Gokul peda before you leave.

Raman Reti and the nearby ghats

Along the river, Raman Reti is a stretch of soft, sacred sand where Krishna and Balaram are remembered to have played, raman meaning play and reti meaning sand. Devotees roll in the sand in a gesture of devotion and the shaded, quiet grounds make it a peaceful place to chant. Nearby are Thakurani Ghat, where Vallabhacharya received the darshan of Yamuna and Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda is said to have seen the whole universe in baby Krishna's mouth, with the Chintaharan Mahadev shrine close by.
