What is the Haridev temple and why visit it?

The Haridev temple stands on the bank of Mansi Ganga in Govardhan and  it is one of the most historically important temples in all of Braj. In the tradition, it is one of four great temples whose origins trace to Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, who established the principal deities of the region: Govind Dev at Vrindavan, Haridev at Govardhan, Baladev near Mahavan and Keshavadev at Mathura. The deity here, Haridev, is the worshipful form bound up with Govardhan itself.

It is a place where the antiquity of Braj's worship and the turbulence of its history are both written into the stones.

The history of the temple

The Haridev deity, like others of Vajranabha's age, was lost for centuries and then recovered in an excavation in the early sixteenth century, after which Raja Bhagwan Das of Amer raised a grand temple for it, in the red-sandstone, Akbar-era style of its time. In 1670, when Aurangzeb's forces moved against the rich temples of Braj, the Rajput kings helped the devotees carry the principal deities to safety and  the original Haridev, with Keshavadev of Mathura, was taken to a village near Rasadhan in the Kanpur region. The temple at Govardhan continues as a living place of worship.

A tip from Gurudutt: Come to Haridev for its history as much as its darshan, this is one of the four ancient temples of Braj, and a knowing guide will set it beside Govind Dev, Baladev and Keshavadev so you feel the shape of Vajranabha's original four. It sits right on Mansi Ganga, so fold it naturally into the start of your parikrama, with Chakleshwar Mahadev close by to the north. Early morning, before the parikrama crowds build, is the calmest time to take it in.

The four temples of Vajranabha

Haridev's deepest significance is as one of the four temples traced to Vajranabha, the

great-grandson of Krishna who, in the tradition, sought to fix the memory of Krishna's pastimes in Braj by establishing its principal deities. Govind Dev at Vrindavan, Baladev near Mahavan, Keshavadev at Mathura and Haridev at Govardhan form that ancient set. To visit Haridev with this in mind is to touch one corner of the original devotional map of Braj. See our Govind Dev guide for another of the four.
