What is Vishram Ghat and why is it so sacred?

Vishram Ghat, which translates literally to 'resting ghat', is the spot where Krishna rested after killing the tyrannical king Kansa. That single act of liberation gave the ghat its name and its unmatched sanctity in the Braj region. Of the 25 ghats that line the Yamuna in Mathura, this is universally considered the most important.

The ghat sits right in the heart of the old city bazaar, which means it is lively at almost any hour. Steps lead down to the river bank where priests sit under reed umbrellas offering puja services, boatmen wait in their wooden row-boats, and devotees perform pradakshina of the ghat's small temples. The mix of the ancient and the everyday is unlike anywhere else.

Pilgrims believe that bathing here on specific auspicious days — particularly during Kartik Purnima or a solar eclipse — washes away a lifetime of sins. Even on ordinary mornings, the ghat fills with people who have travelled hundreds of kilometres purely for the chance to touch the Yamuna at this spot.

The evening Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat

Every evening as the sun sets over Mathura, priests descend to Vishram Ghat and perform the Yamuna Aarti — a ceremony of fire, flowers, and devotional music offered to the river goddess. The ritual lasts about 30 minutes and draws hundreds of worshippers who crowd the steps, the bridge above, and the wooden boats bobbing on the river.

The aarti begins with the lighting of large multi-tiered lamps. Priests in white and saffron move in synchrony, waving the lamps in wide circles while a group chants hymns in Sanskrit. Conch shells sound between stanzas. The sound carries across the water and is audible in the lanes of the old bazaar.

Mathura Parikrama: the 14-km sacred walk

Vishram Ghat is the official starting and ending point of the Mathura Parikrama — a circumambulation of the city that covers approximately 14 kilometres and passes all the major sacred sites. Pilgrims walk the route barefoot on auspicious days, chanting 'Radhe Radhe' with each step.

The parikrama typically takes 4–6 hours on foot and passes through Krishna Janmabhoomi (the birthplace of Krishna), Dwarkadhish Temple, Kans Qila, and several smaller temples and kunds. Most devotees start early in the morning to complete the circuit before the afternoon heat.

How to reach Vishram Ghat, Mathura

Vishram Ghat is located in the old city of Mathura, roughly 1.2 kilometres from Mathura Junction railway station. The fastest options from the station are an auto-rickshaw (5–7 minutes, ₹30–50) or a cycle-rickshaw (12–15 minutes, ₹20–30). From Vrindavan, the ghat is about 12 km — hire a shared taxi or auto from Vrindavan bus stand.

There is no dedicated parking at the ghat itself. If you are arriving by car, park near Holi Gate or at the Mathura bus stand and walk or take a short auto ride to the ghat.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat?

The evening Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat is generally around 7:00 PM in summer (April–June) and around 6:30–6:45 PM in winter (October–March). The exact time shifts slightly with sunset. We recommend arriving 15–20 minutes early to find a good spot.

Is there an entry fee to visit Vishram Ghat?

No, Vishram Ghat is completely free to visit. There is no ticket or entry charge. You may choose to pay for optional services such as boat rides (₹50–150/person), puja materials, or prasad from vendors near the ghat.

Can I take a bath at Vishram Ghat?

Yes, bathing at Vishram Ghat is allowed and considered highly auspicious, especially on festival days like Kartik Purnima, Makar Sankranti, and solar/lunar eclipses. The steps (ghats) lead directly into the Yamuna river. Changing rooms are available nearby for a small fee.

How long does the Mathura Parikrama from Vishram Ghat take?

The full Mathura Parikrama is approximately 14 km and takes 4–6 hours on foot at a comfortable devotional pace. Most pilgrims begin at dawn (5–6 AM) and finish by midday to avoid the afternoon heat. E-rickshaws are available if you need to rest part of the route.

What is the best time of year to visit Vishram Ghat?

October to March is the most pleasant time, with cool weather ideal for the parikrama walk and riverside sitting. The Janmashtami festival (August–September) draws the largest crowds and is a spectacular but very busy experience. Avoid visiting in May–June as temperatures can exceed 45°C.
