What is Khadiravan and why visit it?

Khadiravan, today the village of Khayro, is one of the twelve forests of Braj, the Dwadasha Vana and it takes its name from the khadira, a hardy acacia tree that, with the kadamba, once filled the woodland here. In the tradition this is the forest where Krishna, while herding his calves, slew the crane-demon Bakasura, one of the fierce demons sent by Kansa to kill the child. To visit Khadiravan is to come to the scene of one of the boyhood demon-slayings that mark Krishna's leelas across the forests of Braj.

The old texts hold the forest in high honour: to visit Khadiravan, they say, is like reaching the very abode of Vishnu.

Krishna and the crane-demon Bakasura

In the Bhagavata tradition, Bakasura was a mighty demon who took the form of a gigantic crane or baka, sent by Kansa to destroy the child Krishna. As Krishna grazed his calves in this forest, the monstrous crane rushed at him and swallowed him whole, but Krishna burned so hot within the demon's throat that he was forced to disgorge him and then Krishna seized the great beak in his hands and tore it apart, slaying Bakasura before the eyes of the wondering cowherd boys. The forest of Khadiravan keeps the memory of this feat of the small boy who was the Lord. Little of the old forest of khadira and kadamba trees remains today and a village stands where it once spread.

It is one of a chain of demon-slayings, with Dhenukasura at Talvan and others, by which Krishna freed the forests of Braj.

A tip from Gurudutt: Khadiravan is the forest of the Bakasura leela, so it is the place to tell the dramatic story of the giant crane that swallowed Krishna and could not hold him. Honestly, little of the forest survives and Khayro is a rural village, so come for the story and the parikrama, not for scenery. The seven-kilometre parikrama is for the devoted; most visitors take darshan at the main spot. A guide is valuable, as the site is off the usual circuit and little signposted. Fold it into a forests-of-Braj day.

Khadiravan among the twelve forests

Khadiravan is counted among the twelve forests of Braj and is honoured on the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra, often visited together with the nearby forests on the twelve-van circuit. As at the other vans, the texts divide the twelve between the banks of the Yamuna, but the lists genuinely vary on which forest lies on which bank, so we keep to the tradition without forcing a single fixed map. Khadiravan's Bakasura leela links it to the chain of Krishna's demon-slayings across Braj. See our Talvan guide and our Kamavan guide for the related forests.
