What is Madhuvan and why visit it?
Madhuvan, today the village of Maholi a little southwest of Mathura, is honoured as the first of the twelve forests of Braj, the Dwadasha Vana that ring the holy land. Its name carries two meanings the tradition loves: it recalls the demon Madhu, slain here by the Lord, who thereby became Madhusudana, the slayer of Madhu; and madhu also means honey or nectar, for the forest was sweet with honey and the leelas Krishna played here were nectarean. To begin a forest pilgrimage at Madhuvan is to begin where the very name of the Lord as Madhusudana was won.
It is also remembered as the one forest where, in the tradition, the Lord showed his grace across the ages.
Dhruva's penance and the four ages
Madhuvan's most loved site is Dhruva Tila, the mound where, in the tradition, the child-sage Dhruva performed such intense penance, longing for the Lord, that the Lord appeared before him as four-armed Narayana and blessed him, the boy who became the steadfast pole star. Deities of the child Dhruva and of Narayana are honoured here. The tradition holds Madhuvan special as the forest where the Lord acted in all the ages: slaying the demon Madhu and blessing Dhruva in the first age and, in a later age, his kinsman Shatrughna slaying Lavanasura, the son of Madhu, near here, after which Mathura itself was founded. A black deity of Dauji, Balarama, is also taken darshan of at Madhuvan.
So the small village of Maholi holds, in the tradition, an unusually deep layer of sacred memory.
A tip from Gurudutt: Madhuvan is the natural place to begin the forests of Braj, being closest to Mathura, just a few kilometres from Bhuteshwar. Do not expect a forest now: Maholi is a village and the vana lives in its sites and its memory, so come for Dhruva Tila and the kunds, not for woodland. The Dhruva story is a wonderful one to tell children, the little boy whose longing brought the Lord. A guide makes the layers, Madhu, Dhruva, Shatrughna, come alive, since little is signposted. Pair it with Mathura, which is close. |
Madhuvan among the twelve forests
The twelve forests of Braj, the Dwadasha Vana, are honoured together on the great Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra and Madhuvan is counted the first of them. The old texts place the twelve on the east and west banks of the Yamuna, though the lists vary on which forest lies on which bank, so we follow the tradition without forcing a single fixed map. Madhuvan, beside Mathura, naturally pairs with the city and with Dauji, the temple of Balarama. See our Bhuteshwar Mahadev guide and our Dauji and Baldeo guide for the sites nearby.
