I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. Asheshwar Mahadev is one of the quieter temples of Nandgaon, less visited than the great Nand Bhavan on the hill and yet its story reaches back before Krishna himself, to the penance that won the very family into which he would be born. For those who love the deeper roots of the Krishna story, it is a moving place. Here is its story, its timings, its location and how to reach it, told by someone from this district. Add it to your Braj trip with our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

What is Asheshwar Mahadev?

Asheshwar Mahadev, sometimes written Aaseshwar Mahadev, is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva in Nandgaon, the hill town of Nanda Baba, the foster father of Krishna. It stands beside the Asheshwar Kund, a small and beautiful lake of emerald green water lying to the east of Nand Baag, near the Nand Bhavan temple. Within it Shiva is worshipped in the form of the linga and the temple is revered as a place that bestows upon its pilgrims eternal knowledge, peace and devotion. But its true importance is in its story, for this is the Shiva shrine tied to the very founding of Nanda’s family and so to the earthly line of Krishna. The table gives the essentials at a glance.

The story: Parjanya Maharaj and the boon of five sons

The story of Asheshwar Mahadev reaches back a generation before Krishna, to his great grandfather. Parjanya Maharaj was a great and devout king of the cowherd people and he longed for worthy sons to continue his line. To win this blessing he turned to Lord Shiva and here at this spot in Nandgaon he performed a long and arduous penance: each day he would bathe in the sacred waters of the kund and then worship Shiva with all his heart, for years, without wavering. Shiva, who is swiftly pleased by sincere devotion, was moved by the king’s unbroken faith and appeared to him and granted his wish.

The boon was five sons, all endowed with goodness and virtue and among them was Nanda, who would become Nanda Baba, the foster father of Krishna, in whose house at Nandgaon the young Krishna would be raised. And so Krishna, the darling of all Braj, is counted a descendant, a great grandson, of Parjanya Maharaj, whose penance to Shiva at this very temple won the family into which the Lord himself would come. This is why Asheshwar Mahadev matters so: it is the Shiva shrine at the root of Nanda’s house, the temple whose blessing, in the telling of Braj, made possible the childhood of Krishna in Nandgaon.

The Asheshwar Kund

Beside the temple lies the Asheshwar Kund, the sacred lake in whose waters Parjanya Maharaj bathed each day before his worship. Its still, emerald green water is loved by the pilgrims who find their way here and it is part of the sanctity of the place, for the penance that won the boon was performed in its worship. To sit a while by the quiet kund, away from the crowds of the great temples and to take darshan of the Shiva linga in the temple beside it, is the gentle pleasure of a visit to Asheshwar Mahadev, a place of stillness and deep roots rather than grandeur.

Timings and darshan

Asheshwar Mahadev keeps a morning and an afternoon to evening darshan, with a midday break and its hours shift a little between the summer and the winter, as the box above and the table below set out. Being a Shiva temple, Monday is its especially auspicious day and the month of Shravan, the monsoon month sacred to Shiva and the festival of Mahashivratri are its great days, when devotees come to offer water and bilva leaves to the linga. As with every temple, treat these hours as the pattern and confirm on the day, for they vary with the season and on festivals.

Location and how to reach Asheshwar Mahadev

Asheshwar Mahadev lies in Nandgaon, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, pin code 281401, near Nand Baag and the Nand Bhavan temple, to the east of the town. Nandgaon is a hill town about fifty kilometres north west of Mathura and Vrindavan and about eight to nine kilometres from Barsana, the village of Radha, so the two are almost always visited together. The temple is a little away from the main Nand Bhavan on its hill, near the kund, so local or careful directions help you find it. The nearest railway junction is Mathura and the nearest airport Delhi and a private car is much the easiest way to reach and move around Nandgaon. The table gives the distances.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for the drive out to Nandgaon and the walk around its sights. For this temple in particular, being a shrine of Shiva, the Mondays, the monsoon month of Shravan and the great night of Mahashivratri in late winter are the most auspicious and devotional times, when offerings of water and bilva leaves are made to the linga. The early morning, cool and quiet by the kund, is the loveliest hour of the day here. Nandgaon is also wonderful at the Lathmar Holi season, shared with Barsana. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the seasons.

The honest bit

Honest words of Asheshwar Mahadev. Darshan is free and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in Braj. This is a quiet, lesser known temple and kund, not a grand monument, so come for its deep story and its stillness, not for spectacle and you will treasure it. It keeps a midday break, so time your visit for the morning or the later afternoon and evening rather than the closed middle of the day. It lies a little apart from the main Nand Bhavan and can be missed, so a local guide or good directions help you find it. And the kund, like all the sacred waters of Braj, is to be honoured but not bathed in carelessly. Come in devotion and you will feel the antiquity of the place.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and the villages of Nandgaon and Barsana and their quieter temples are part of my own devotional ground. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a lesser known shrine like this, a local is the difference between missing it and understanding it: finding the temple and the kund away from the main hill, telling the story of Parjanya’s penance and the boon that founded Nanda’s house, timing the darshan around the midday break and pairing Nandgaon with Barsana in the right order. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: do not visit Asheshwar Mahadev alone as a special trip; fold it into a day of Nandgaon and Barsana, the two hill villages of Nanda and of Radha. Take darshan at the great Nand Bhavan on its hill, then come quietly to Asheshwar Mahadev and its kund to touch the deeper root of the story, the penance that won Nanda’s line and then cross to Barsana. Seen in its setting, this humble Shiva shrine adds a depth to Nandgaon that the hilltop temple alone cannot give.

Plan your Nandgaon visit

Tell me your dates and your group and I will build Asheshwar Mahadev and Nandgaon into your Braj trip, paired with Barsana in the right order, the darshan timed around the midday break, with a car that drives you and a guide who finds the quieter shrines, for one clear price.
