Shri Radha Rani temple (Ladli Ji): the temple on the hill

The chief place to visit in Barsana and one of the rare temples in all India where Radha herself is the presiding deity, is the Shri Radha Rani temple, known lovingly as Ladli Ji or Shriji, meaning the beloved daughter. It crowns the Bhanugarh hill above the town, built in red and white stone and it is reached by a climb of more than two hundred steps or, for those who cannot manage them, by a ropeway or a hand carried palki. From the top the view over Barsana and across the Braj plain to Nandgaon’s hill is beautiful. This is the heart of Radha’s worship and the centre of the two great festivals of Barsana, Radhashtami and the world famous Lathmar Holi. Darshan is free. Kirti Mandir: the temple of Radha’s mother

A beautiful and unusual place to visit is Kirti Mandir, dedicated to Kirti Devi, the mother of Radha, one of the very few temples anywhere devoted to Radha’s mother, showing the infant Radha in her mother’s arms. It is a modern, serene, cream coloured temple set on the flat ground of the town, not on a hill, which makes it an easy and welcome visit for the elderly and for those who cannot climb to the hilltop temple. Its peaceful gardens and the tenderness of its theme, a mother and her divine child, make it a favourite of many pilgrims and it is a gentle contrast to the steep climb of Ladli Ji.

Maan Mandir and Maan Garh

On one of Barsana’s hills stands Maan Mandir, at the place called Maan Garh, tied to one of the best loved episodes of the Radha and Krishna story: the maan, the loving sulk, when Radha withdrew in playful anger and Krishna came to coax her back. It is an ancient and atmospheric spot, quieter than the main temple, with fine views over the town and for those who know the story it carries a special tenderness. It is a short climb and it rewards the visitor who seeks out the lesser known hills of Barsana rather than only the chief temple.

Rangeeli Mahal

Rangeeli Mahal is Barsana’s grand modern temple complex, a large and richly decorated shrine to the divine couple, with beautifully adorned deities, carved and painted halls and peaceful gardens. Built in recent times, it is spacious and calm, a contrast to the crowded lanes and the steep hilltop and a good place to sit for a while. Its scale and its artwork make it one of the more visually striking places in Barsana and families in particular find it an easy and pleasant stop.

Prem Sarovar: the lake of divine love

Between Barsana and Nandgaon lies Prem Sarovar, the lake of love, one of the most cherished sites of the whole region, held to be the place where Radha and Krishna met and where the tears of their love formed the lake. It is a still and beautiful body of water, ringed by trees and steps and a place to sit quietly rather than to hurry past, one of the loveliest and most peaceful spots in all of Braj. Many pilgrims pause here on the way between the two villages and an evening by its water is a memory that stays.

Dan Garh, Mor Kutir and the hills

Barsana is built around four hills, the abode in the old telling of the four faces of Brahma and among and around them lie more sites for the visitor who lingers. Dan Garh marks the spot where Krishna and his friends playfully stopped Radha and the gopis to levy a toll, the dan, a favourite tale of Braj. Mor Kutir recalls the dance of the peacocks before the divine couple. There are the old temples of the town such as Jugal Kishore and Dan Bihari and the kunds, the sacred ponds, scattered about. Walking the hills and seeking these out, rather than climbing only to Ladli Ji and leaving, is what a full visit to Barsana involves.

A note on what is and is not in Barsana: some lists of Barsana places mistakenly include temples that are actually in Vrindavan, such as ISKCON, Radha Damodar or the Ashta Sakhi temple. Those are wonderful, but they are in Vrindavan, not Barsana; I would rather tell you honestly so you plan the right day in the right town. Barsana’s own places are the ones above, the temples and hills of Radha’s village.

Timings and entry

Barsana’s places are temples and hill sites rather than ticketed monuments, so there are no entry fees anywhere and darshan is free. The main Radha Rani temple keeps the morning and evening darshan hours given above, with a long midday break for the deities’ rest, so do not plan your climb for the early afternoon. Kirti Mandir, Rangeeli Mahal and the other temples keep broadly similar Braj hours and the outdoor sites, the sarovars and the hills, are open through daylight. Come in the cooler morning or the evening and confirm the day’s temple hours before you set off, since a wasted climb up the steps to a closed gate is the commonest mistake here.

Location and how to reach Barsana

Barsana is a hilltop town in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, in the Braj region, with the pin code 281405. It lies to the north west of Mathura, about forty to fifty kilometres away and about twenty kilometres from Vrindavan and it is close to Nandgaon, about eight to nine kilometres off, so the two villages of Radha and of Nanda Baba are almost always visited together. The nearest railway station is Mathura Junction and the nearest airport is Delhi, about a hundred and fifty kilometres away, with Agra closer but smaller. It is best reached by private car, since it is well off the main Mathura and Vrindavan circuit and public transport into the villages is limited and the car can wait while you climb the hill. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for the climb and for walking between the sites and the winter light on the hills and the sarovars is lovely. The Lathmar Holi of spring is Barsana’s world famous occasion, unforgettable but overwhelming and hugely crowded and Radhashtami, the birthday of Radha in late summer, is the village’s own supreme day, when Barsana celebrates its daughter as nowhere else. For a calm visit to the places themselves, a weekday morning outside festival time lets you climb to Ladli Ji, sit by Prem Sarovar and seek out the hills in peace. The honest bit

Honest words on visiting Barsana’s places. Darshan and entry everywhere are free and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in Braj. The climb to the Radha Rani temple is a real one, more than two hundred steps, so those who cannot manage it should use the ropeway or a palki and if you take a palki, agree the fee clearly in advance to avoid pressure at the top. Kirti Mandir on the flat is an easy alternative for the elderly. On Radha’s birthplace, I tell you honestly that it is revered at both Barsana and at Raval near Gokul and I take no side, for the tradition honours both. And on the day of Lathmar Holi the crowd and the play are genuinely rough, so go for the spectacle, mind your valuables and not with small children.
