📌 QUICK ANSWER

Delhi to Mathura is about 150 km, roughly three to three and a half hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway. You can also take a train to Mathura Junction, a frequent and inexpensive option on the main Delhi line, or fly into Delhi and drive down. Vrindavan sits about 12 to 15 km beyond Mathura, a short hop on from the city.

Key takeaways

  • By road: about 150 km, roughly three to three and a half hours on the Yamuna Expressway.

  • By train: frequent services to Mathura Junction on the main Delhi line.

  • By air: Delhi is the main airport, with the new Jewar airport on the same corridor and Agra nearby.

  • Vrindavan is about 12 to 15 km beyond Mathura, a 20 to 30 minute hop.

  • A one-day round trip from Delhi is doable if you start at dawn, but an overnight is calmer.

This is the easiest leg of the whole pilgrimage. The Yamuna Expressway has made Braj a comfortable half-day reach from Delhi, and I send cars up to Delhi to collect pilgrims most weeks. I'm Gurudutt, born in Gokul, and here's every honest option for getting here. Want it handled door to door? Message me on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809 or see our Mathura Vrindavan tour from Delhi.

By road: the Yamuna Expressway

The fastest and most flexible way is to drive. The Yamuna Expressway runs from Greater Noida straight down toward Mathura and Agra, covering roughly 150 km in about three to three and a half hours. It's a smooth, controlled-access toll road. You can self-drive, hire a taxi, or let us send a car. From Noida and Gurgaon the access is easy, and the drive is straightforward enough that many families do it in a single day.

By train: to Mathura Junction

Mathura Junction is a major hub on the main Delhi, Agra and Mumbai line, so trains are frequent and among the cheapest ways to reach Braj. Fast trains cover Delhi to Mathura in roughly two to three hours depending on the service. Once you step off at Mathura Junction, e-rickshaws, autos and taxis take you on to the temples and to Vrindavan. Check current timings and fares on the railway booking site for your date.

By air: Delhi, Jewar and Agra

There's no major airport at Mathura itself. Most flyers land at Delhi, the largest airport, about three to three and a half hours away by expressway. The new Jewar airport sits on the same corridor and is closer once fully operational, and Agra has a small airport nearby. From any of them, you drive the last leg, which we can arrange.

Reaching Vrindavan from Mathura

Vrindavan is only about 12 to 15 km from Mathura, a 20 to 30 minute hop by car, auto or e-rickshaw. There's a small Vrindavan railway station too, but most pilgrims arrive at Mathura Junction and travel on from there. If your whole focus is Vrindavan, you can drive straight there from Delhi and treat Mathura as a side visit.

Day trip or overnight?

A one-day round trip from Delhi works if you leave at dawn and keep to the core temples, but it's a long day. An overnight is far calmer: you catch the evening aarti and an early, uncrowded Banke Bihari darshan, which a same-day trip usually misses. For how to shape your days here, see how many days you need and how to plan the trip.

"This trip felt like a good combination of heritage and spirituality. We explored the Taj Mahal early morning before the crowd increased and later visited Mathura and Vrindavan temples comfortably. The transition from Agra's monuments to the devotional atmosphere of Braj made the journey feel special."

"We were not sure whether Mathura and Vrindavan could be covered properly in one day, but the planning was done really well. We visited Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, Banke Bihari Temple and Prem Mandir comfortably without feeling rushed. The car journey remained smooth and the evening atmosphere in Vrindavan became the highlight of our trip."

Radha Damodar Temple Vrindavan: The Giriraj Shila, the Goswami Samadhis and Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir

Radha Damodar Temple in Vrindavan, founded in 1542 by Jiva Goswami, is one of the seven Goswami temples and one of the most spiritually charged small temples in the town, holding the Giriraj Govardhan shila that bears the mark of Krishna's own foot, the samadhis of Rupa Goswami and Jiva Goswami, and the bhajan kutir where Srila Prabhupada lived before he carried Krishna consciousness to the world. Devotees circle the Giriraj shila here because it is held that four rounds of it equal one full Govardhan parikrama. Entry and darshan are completely free. It is quiet, meditative, and easy to miss, which is exactly why a guide helps. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Shri Radha Raman Temple Vrindavan: The Self Manifested Deity, Timings and History

Shri Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan, established in 1542 by Gopala Bhatta Goswami, is one of the seven principal Goswami temples of the town, and its deity is swayambhu, self manifested from a shaligram stone rather than carved. It holds a unique place in history: it is the only one of the seven original Vrindavan deities that was never moved away during Aurangzeb's time, so it has stayed in unbroken worship on this spot for nearly five centuries. Entry and darshan are completely free. The temple kitchen fire, lit at the founding, has never gone out. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Seva Kunj: The Grove Where Krishna Served Radha, by a Braj Born Guide

Seva Kunj, also called Nikunj Van, is the sacred grove in Vrindavan where Shri Krishna is believed to have served Radha Rani after the raas: pressing her feet, braiding her hair and adorning her, which is why it is called the garden of service. It is open daily in a morning session and an evening session, entry is free, and like Nidhivan it closes after the evening aarti, because Brajwasis hold that the divine couple remain here through the night.
