By train: reach Mathura Junction first

There is no direct train to Vrindavan, so rail travellers head to Mathura Junction, one of the best connected stations in the region. The Gatimaan Express is the fastest and reaches Mathura in well under two hours from Delhi. The Taj Express and several Intercity trains also run this route throughout the day. Book ahead in the festival season, when seats fill quickly.

By bus, and the metro point people miss

Buses to Mathura and Vrindavan leave from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and ISBT Anand Vihar, with

some private services from Sarai Kale Khan. A non AC seat is about ₹150 to ₹250, and an AC Volvo is around ₹500, with the trip taking four to five hours. Buses are the cheapest way across and run through the day, though the timing is less predictable than a train.

This is the part most guides skip. When you reach Vrindavan, ignore anyone selling a VIP or special darshan pass for Banke Bihari. There is no such pass. Darshan is free, and that offer is a tout’s trick. If you arrive by cab, agree the route and any waiting charge before you start. If you come by bus, settle the last mile e-rickshaw fare before you sit, since the first quote outside any stand is usually inflated. What to see first when you arrive
