📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Mathura to Vrindavan distance by road is 11.7-14.6 km, with travel time between 29-36 minutes depending on the route and traffic. The fastest route is via NH 44 (14.6 km, 29 minutes). From Delhi, Mathura is 183 km (3 hours via Yamuna Expressway). Experience My India arranges AC cab transport for all pilgrims from ₹1,999 no auto-negotiation, no route confusion. One of the most common things I hear from pilgrims before they arrive in Braj is: 'We thought Mathura and Vrindavan were basically the same place.' And I understand why on most travel sites they are listed together, their names are always paired and the distance between them is so small that it hardly registers. But that small distance roughly 11-15 km depending on the route carries a lot of planning weight. Getting it wrong means arriving at a temple during the wrong session, misunderstanding your transit time or spending 90 minutes in an auto when a 30-minute cab ride could have saved you an entire darshan window.
The Mathura Vrindavan distance is just the beginning. This guide gives you the complete picture three verified route options between the two towns, a city-to-city distance table from Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Lucknow, Moradabad and Varanasi, temple-to-temple distances inside Vrindavan, distances to all the outer Braj circuit places and honest travel time estimates based on ground reality, not just Google Maps.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has moved 50,000+ pilgrims through these roads every route, every traffic pattern, every time of day. What I am sharing here is not a collection of map screenshots. It is what we actually see on the ground every single week. Call +91-7302265809 and we will send you a distance and logistics plan specific to your travel dates before you book anything.
Mathura to Vrindavan Distance: 3 Route Options Compared
Google Maps currently shows three viable routes between Mathura and Vrindavan. Here is what each one actually looks like on the ground not just the distance and time, but what kind of road experience you can expect:
Route | Distance | Google Maps Time | Ground Reality | Best For |
Via NH 44 (fastest) | 14.6 km | 29 min | Smooth expressway-style driving; least traffic on weekdays. Add 15-20 min on weekends. | First-time visitors, families, AC cabs |
Via NH 44 + Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj Marg | 16.5 km | 29 min | Slightly longer but passes near some outer Braj areas; similar traffic profile to Route 1. | Those wanting a slower, scenic approach |
Via Bhuteshwar Rd / Mathura-Vrindavan Marg | 11.7 km | 36 min | Shortest distance but heavier local traffic. Passes through residential areas and market lanes. | E-rickshaws, shared autos, budget travelers |
Honest ground reality: The 11.7 km route via Bhuteshwar Road is the shortest on paper but is consistently slower due to narrower roads and heavier local traffic. For most families and first-time pilgrims, the NH 44 route (14.6 km) is the right call, slightly longer in distance, meaningfully shorter in actual travel time during peak hours. Experience My India's drivers know which route to take at which time of day. This is part of every Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package from ₹1,999.
Mathura Vrindavan Distance from Major Indian Cities
This is the table most pilgrims actually need before they book. All distances to Mathura (your transit hub) add 12-15 km and 30-45 minutes for the final leg to Vrindavan from Mathura.
From City | Distance to Mathura | Best Route | Realistic Travel Time | Experience My India Transport |
183 km | Yamuna Expressway | 3 to 3.5 hours (cab) | AC cab pickup from hotel, ISBT or airport from ₹2,500
58 km | NH 44 (Agra-Delhi Highway) | 1.5 hours | Agra + Mathura Vrindavan day combo available
Jaipur | 255 km | NH 21 via Agra | 4.5 to 5 hours | Jaipur to Mathura Vrindavan cab packages available |
Lucknow | 340 km | Agra-Lucknow Expressway | 5 to 5.5 hours | Lucknow railway → Mathura Junction → Vrindavan cab arranged |
Moradabad | 230 km | Via NH 34 / NH 58 through Ghaziabad | 4.5 to 5 hours | Station pickup at Mathura Junction included in all packages |
Varanasi | 665-713 km | Via Agra-Lucknow Expressway | 10 to 12 hours (road) / 8-12 hours (train) | Train to Mathura Junction recommended; cab arranged on arrival |
Hyderabad | 1,450 km | Flight to Delhi + cab / Train to Mathura | Flight 2.5 hr + road 3.5 hr | Delhi airport pickup included in premium packages |
Bangalore | 2,100 km | Flight to Delhi + cab | Flight 3 hr + road 3.5 hr | Same as above airport pickup arranged from Delhi IGI |
Nearest airport to Mathura Vrindavan: Agra's Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Airport (60 km). However, Agra has limited flight connectivity from most cities. The practical choice for most pilgrims is to fly into Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport and take an AC cab or the Gatimaan Express (Hazrat Nizamuddin to Mathura Junction, 1 hour 40 minutes, daily). Experience My India arranges Delhi airport pickup for all multi-day as 4 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Packages call +91-7302265809 to confirm your arrival time.
Temple to Temple Distance Inside Vrindavan
This is the distance data most pilgrims do not think about until they are already inside Vrindavan and by then, wrong assumptions about walking time have already cost them a darshan. The distances below are as-the-crow-flies followed by realistic travel times during peak visiting hours.
From Temple | To Temple | Distance | Mode | Realistic Time | Notes |
ISKCON Temple | 1.8 km | E-rickshaw / walk | 20-35 min walk; 10-15 min e-rickshaw | Lane congestion near Banke Bihari adds time on weekends
Banke Bihari Temple | Prem Mandir | 2.2 km | E-rickshaw | 10-15 min | Wider road; less congestion than temple lanes |
Banke Bihari Temple | Radha Raman Temple | 0.6 km | Walk | 10-15 min on foot | Narrow lanes; no vehicles. Budget 15 min including shoe counter |
Banke Bihari Temple | Nidhivan | 0.5 km | Walk | 8-12 min on foot | Very close; enter before 11 AM |
Banke Bihari Temple | Keshi Ghat (Yamuna) | 1.2 km | Walk / e-rickshaw | 15-20 min walk; 8 min e-rickshaw | Morning walk is pleasant; avoid midday heat |
ISKCON Temple | Prem Mandir | 0.9 km | Walk / e-rickshaw | 10-12 min walk; 5 min e-rickshaw | Good road; manageable at any time |
Radha Raman Temple | 1.8 km | E-rickshaw | 12-18 min | Passes through market lanes; slower on weekends
Keshi Ghat | Radha Damodar Temple | 1.4 km | Walk / e-rickshaw | 15-20 min walk | Central Vrindavan; walking is often faster than vehicles |
ISKCON Temple | Govardhan Hill | 23 km | Cab | 40-50 min | Cannot be done on foot; arrange transport in advance |
Important: Google Maps shows Banke Bihari to ISKCON as a 4-minute drive. In reality, that same route on a Saturday afternoon takes 35-45 minutes because private cars cannot enter the inner Vrindavan lanes, e-rickshaws queue at temple gates and pedestrian foot traffic fills the roads during aarti hours. Experience My India plans every temple sequence with these realistic in-town travel times factored in not Google Maps estimates. This is why our Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour works as a single day, while self-planned attempts often fall short.
All Key Braj Places and Their Distance from Mathura
If you are planning the outer Braj circuit Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul here is the verified distance from Mathura city centre for each:
Braj Place | Distance from Mathura | Travel Time | Best Mode | Significance |
Vrindavan | 11.7-14.6 km | 29-36 min | Cab / auto-rickshaw | Krishna's childhood leela bhoomi |
Govardhan Hill | 26 km | 45-55 min | Cab | Govardhan Parikrama 21 km sacred circuit |
Gokul | 10 km | 20-25 min | Cab / auto | Krishna's first home after birth |
45 km | 1 to 1.5 hours | Cab | Birthplace of Radha Rani; famous for Holi
Nandgaon | 50 km | 1 to 1.5 hours | Cab | Village that raised Krishna; Nand Bhawan |
Radha Kund / Shyam Kund | 26 km (near Govardhan) | 50-60 min | Cab | Sacred kund associated with Radha-Krishna |
Mahavan (Brahmand Ghat) | 11 km | 20-25 min | Cab / auto | Brahmand Ghat where baby Krishna swallowed universe |
Baldeo (Dauji Temple) | 22 km | 40-45 min | Cab | Temple of Balram Ji, elder brother of Krishna |
Covering all Braj places in a single day is not realistic and attempting it usually means experiencing none of them properly. Experience My India's 3-Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package and 4-Day Braj packages are designed around these exact distances, sequencing each location in the most efficient order with time for actual darshan, not just drive-bys. Call +91-7302265809 to build your specific Braj circuit.
How to Travel from Mathura to Vrindavan Mode by Mode
Mode | Cost | Travel Time | Best For | Watch Out For |
Shared auto-rickshaw | ₹20-₹40 | 40-55 min | Budget solo travelers, single pilgrims | Stops frequently; may feel crowded; last 500m must be walked |
Private auto-rickshaw | ₹150-₹200 | 35-45 min | Small groups up to 3 people | Negotiate fare before boarding. Weekend rates double. |
E-rickshaw (shared) | ₹15-₹30 | 45-55 min | Very budget; eco-friendly | Slowest option; fine for relaxed travelers |
Private cab / taxi | ₹250-₹400 | 25-35 min | Families, elderly, luggage | Cannot enter old-town lanes; drops at temple belt entry |
AC cab (booked) | ₹700-₹1,000 for round trip | 25-35 min | Comfortable one-day or multi-day trips | Book in advance via Experience My India or app |
Local bus (UPSRTC) | ₹15-₹25 | 45-60 min | Extreme budget; aware of local routes | Limited, infrequent stops; not comfortable with luggage |
Local train (Vrindavan railway) | ₹10-₹20 | 20 min (train only) | Train enthusiasts; budget travelers | Very limited schedule; station is 1-2 km from temples |
Best practical option for most pilgrims: A pre-booked private AC cab. You control your departure time, your route and your drop point. On a 7-hour pilgrimage day, the difference between a ₹400 shared auto and a ₹1,000 pre-booked AC Mathura Vrindavan Cab is peace of mind and 40 minutes of time which is worth more than the ₹600 difference when you are trying to catch Banke Bihari's morning aarti at 7:55 AM.
Experience My India's Same Day Tour (₹1,999) includes a pre-booked AC cab that moves your group between Mathura and Vrindavan at precisely the right times arriving at each temple gate during the correct darshan window, not after it has closed. Call +91-7302265809.
Where to Go First Mathura or Vrindavan?
This is one of the most-asked questions from first-time pilgrims and the honest answer depends on your arrival time and what you want to experience first. But if you want a clear recommendation:
Start in Mathura if: You arrive in the morning and want to begin with Krishna Janmabhoomi (birthplace). Mathura works best for a 7:00-11:30 AM morning block covering Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat. Then use the afternoon (12:00-4:30 PM, when most temples close) to travel to Vrindavan for the evening session.
Start in Vrindavan if: You are staying overnight and want to attend ISKCON's mangala aarti at 4:30 AM or Banke Bihari's opening Shringar Aarti at 7:55 AM. In this case, Vrindavan in the morning, Mathura in the afternoon after the temples reopen is the natural sequence.
One-day visitors from Delhi / Agra: Start at Mathura (arrive 9:00 AM), complete your Mathura darshan by noon, transit to Vrindavan by 12:30 PM, rest during the afternoon closure and begin Vrindavan evening darshan from 5:00 PM. This is the sequence Experience My India uses for all Same Day Tours and it works consistently for first-time pilgrims.
Can You Do Mathura and Vrindavan in One Day?
Yes but only if the day is structured correctly. Here is the realistic one-day plan that Experience My India uses for all Same Day Tour groups:
Time | Activity | Location | Distance from Previous Stop |
7:00-7:30 AM | Vishram Ghat sunrise prayer and Yamuna aarti | Mathura | Start |
8:00-10:00 AM | Krishna Janmabhoomi darshan | Mathura | 0.8 km from Vishram Ghat |
10:30-11:30 AM | Dwarkadhish Temple morning darshan | Mathura | 0.4 km from Janmabhoomi |
12:00-4:00 PM | Travel to Vrindavan; lunch and rest | Transit + Vrindavan | 14.6 km via NH 44 |
4:30-6:00 PM | Banke Bihari evening darshan (opens 5:30 PM summer) | Vrindavan | Reach by 5:15 PM |
6:30-8:00 PM | Radha Raman sandhya aarti (6:00 PM) + Nidhivan visit | Vrindavan | 0.6 km from Banke Bihari |
7:30-9:00 PM | Prem Mandir light show (7:30 PM summer) | Vrindavan | 2.2 km from Banke Bihari |
This is a full, realistic day not 10 temples rushed through, but 6-7 meaningful stops timed around actual darshan windows. The Experience My India Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour (from ₹1,999) includes AC cab, guide, shoe counter management and all timing handles so nothing falls through the gap. Book at +91-7302265809.
Ground Truth What Nobody Tells You About Mathura Vrindavan Travel
After 8 years and 50,000+ pilgrims moved through these roads, here are the distance and travel realities that most blogs do not say clearly:
The 11.7 km shortest route is not the fastest and Google Maps is wrong. The Bhuteshwar Road route (11.7 km) regularly takes 45-60 minutes in weekday traffic and up to 90 minutes on weekends. The NH 44 route (14.6 km) takes 29-35 minutes in the same conditions. More distance, less time. Every Experience My India driver takes NH 44 by default unless there is a specific reason to use another route.
'Mathura Junction to Vrindavan' and 'Mathura city centre to Vrindavan' are different distances. Mathura Junction railway station is on the eastern edge of Mathura city. The distance from the station to Vrindavan's temple belt is 15-17 km. The distance from Vishram Ghat or Dwarkadhish Temple (which is in central Mathura) to Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan is 12-13 km. This 3-4 km gap changes your travel time estimate by 10-15 minutes enough to miss an aarti if you planned around the wrong number.
'Local transport inside Vrindavan' means e-rickshaw and walking, not cars. Private cars cannot enter the narrow lanes within 300-500 metres of Banke Bihari Temple, Radha Raman and Nidhivan. Your cab drops you at the lane entry. The final approach to every old-town temple is on foot. Budget 8-15 minutes per temple for the walk from the drop point to the gate and the same on the way back out.
Govardhan is 26 km from Mathura but the Parikrama itself is 21 km. Many pilgrims plan Govardhan as a quick addition to their Vrindavan day and then discover it requires 5-7 hours for the full parikrama circuit. The 26 km drive from Mathura is the easy part. Experience My India includes Govardhan Parikrama in the 3-Day and 4-Day packages with cab support that follows the group every 3-4 km so elderly pilgrims never have to walk beyond their limit.
Barsana (45 km) and Nandgaon (50 km) require a full half-day each. Both places are included in many '1-day Braj tour' itineraries found online and both are nearly always done poorly because of time constraints. Radha Rani Temple in Barsana involves a significant climb (the temple is on a hill) and the darshan queue on non-festival days can run 30-45 minutes. Combining Barsana and Nandgaon into the same half-day as Mathura and Vrindavan is not realistic. Experience My India always allocates a dedicated day for the Barsana-Nandgaon circuit in our 3-Day and 4-Day packages.
Know Before You Plan
The afternoon gap is not wasted time, it is travel time. Most Vrindavan temples close from 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM (summer). This is the natural window to complete your Mathura darshan, have lunch and travel the 14.6 km to Vrindavan for the evening session. Do not fight the gap plan around it.
Festival distances multiply. During Janmashtami (September 4-5, 2026), Holi and Radhashtami, the NH 44 route slows to a crawl near the Vrindavan entry junction. A 14.6 km journey can take 90-120 minutes. Plan to arrive by 7:00 AM or after 8:00 PM to avoid the worst of it. Call Experience My India at +91-7302265809 for festival-specific route advice.
Is it better to stay in Mathura or Vrindavan? For darshan-focused visits: stay in Vrindavan. It gives you walking access to Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, ISKCON and Keshi Ghat without any morning transport logistics. For those who want more hotel options and city-style infrastructure: Mathura. Experience My India's 2-Day Tour includes a hotel near the Vrindavan temple belt enquiry at +91-7302265809.
Auto fares on weekends inflate by 50-100%. The ₹20-₹40 shared auto fare from Mathura to Vrindavan quoted by travel sites is a weekday rate. On Saturdays and Sundays, the same journey costs ₹80-₹150 as autos know demand is higher. Pre-booked cabs through Experience My India have fixed rates, no weekend premium, no negotiation on arrival.
Mathura Vrindavan distance from your location: If you are trying to calculate from a specific city not listed here, the simplest benchmark is: Mathura is on NH 44 between Delhi (183 km) and Agra (58 km). Any city within 400 km can realistically be done as a 1-day trip with an early start. Beyond 400 km, plan at least one overnight stay.
Vrindavan Parikrama is 10.5 km, not the same as the temple circuit. If you plan to do the Vrindavan Parikrama (the sacred walkway around the entire town), that is a separate 10.5 km route starting from Keshi Ghat. Budget 3-4 hours and plan it for an Ekadashi morning for the best experience. Experience My India includes this in 2-Day and longer packages.

Plan Your Braj Trip with Experience My India
Distances in Braj are small. The gap between a fulfilling yatra and a frustrating one is not how many kilometres you travel, it is whether the timing is right when you arrive. A 14.6 km drive on NH 44 in 29 minutes takes you from Mathura to Vrindavan. But arriving at Banke Bihari at 5:10 PM, when the temple opens at 5:30 PM, turns those 29 minutes into a peaceful walk to the gate. Arriving at 5:45 PM after bad traffic means a 40-minute wait in a growing crowd.
Experience My India has managed these distances, routes and timings for 50,000+ pilgrims since 2018. Our rating is 4.5★ from 204+ pilgrims. Tours start from ₹1,999 per person.
