Ways to travel, compared
There are three main ways to make the journey. The table compares the distance, time and approximate cost of each; treat the costs as a guide and confirm on the day.
Mathura Vrindavan to Delhi, by mode. Costs are approximate; verify on the day.
Mode | Distance | Travel time | Approx. cost |
Car via Yamuna Expressway | 160 to 185 km | 2.5 to 3.5 hours | Rs 2,000 to 4,000 |
Train (Mathura Jn plus auto) | About 160 km | 2 to 3 hours | Rs 150 to 1,000+ |
Bus | About 160 km | 4 to 5 hours | Rs 300 to 800 |
By car: the easiest way
A private car is the fastest and most convenient. The route runs from Mathura or Vrindavan onto the Yamuna Expressway, through Noida and into Delhi, taking about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, though the last stretch into Delhi can add time in peak traffic. A one way private cab typically costs about Rs 2,000 to 4,000 depending on the vehicle, plus the expressway toll. The great advantage is that it comes to your door and drops you at your Delhi address, with no changes. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers it.
By train: fast and budget-friendly
The train is quick and easy on the purse. From Mathura Junction, premium trains such as the Gatimaan or Shatabdi reach Delhi in well under two hours, while regular expresses take a little over two. Fares range widely, from about Rs 150 on ordinary trains to over Rs 1,000 in premium classes. Remember that from Vrindavan you must first reach Mathura Junction, about 12 kilometres, by auto or cab. For those travelling light, the fast trains are excellent.
By bus: the cheapest
Buses are the most economical option. They run frequently from Mathura to Delhi’s interstate terminals at Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan, taking about 4 to 5 hours and cost roughly Rs 300 to 800 depending on whether you take a state or a private air conditioned bus. They are slower and less comfortable and drop you at a bus terminal rather than your door, but for budget travel they serve well.
Which should you choose?
Choose a private car for the easiest, door to door journey, especially with family or luggage. Choose a fast train if you are travelling light and want speed at low cost. Choose the bus only if budget is the single priority. For most, the car and the fast train are the two best options. If cost is on your mind, our Vrindavan trip cost guide helps you plan the whole budget.
A journey worth taking
Beyond the numbers, this is a lovely journey. The Yamuna Expressway is one of India’s finest roads, smooth and fast, running through open country between the capital and the land of Krishna. In a couple of easy hours you pass from the bustle of Delhi to the temple towns of Braj, or back again. It is short enough for a weekend, easy enough for first timers and rich enough to draw millions each year. Whichever way you travel it, the journey is well worth taking.
Tips for the journey
Leave early. Depart before the morning rush to clear the Noida and Delhi traffic quickly.
Book trains ahead. The fast trains fill quickly, especially on weekends and in festival season.
Budget for the toll. The Yamuna Expressway toll is charged on top of the car fare.
Allow for Delhi traffic. The last stretch into the capital is the slowest part of the drive.
From Vrindavan, add the hop. Reach Mathura Junction first if travelling by train.
The honest bit
A short honest note. The costs above are general ranges, not our fixed fares and they shift with fuel, season and demand, so always confirm on the day. When you reach Braj, remember that every temple darshan is free; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass for Banke Bihari. The Yamuna, whose expressway you travel, is revered and, honestly, polluted. Told plainly, the journey is easy and the welcome warm.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I have driven this road between Braj and Delhi countless times since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims served, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews. We WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We make the journey the easy part: a clean car to your door, the smooth expressway and a local driver who knows the road and the traffic. Our fare is one clear number with the toll named separately and never a charge for free darshan. To Delhi or from it, we handle it.
Tip from Gurudutt: if you are heading to Delhi to catch a flight, give yourself a generous margin. The drive is quick, but the last stretch into Delhi can be slow, so leave early and travel calm rather than racing the clock.
