When is Guru Purnima and Mudia Purnima 2026

Guru Purnima 2026 falls on Ashadh Purnima, around 29 July and at Govardhan it is kept as Mudia Purnima. It is fixed by tithi, so confirm the date on the panchang. It is one of the two greatest crowd-days on Govardhan Hill, alongside the Annakut, when lakhs of pilgrims and thousands of Gaudiya sadhus fill the 21 km parikrama marg in the monsoon. For those who want Braj at its most intensely devotional, this is the day; for those who want calm, it is the day to avoid.

What Guru Purnima means

Guru Purnima, also called Vyasa Purnima, honours the guru, the one who dispels darkness and Veda Vyasa, the compiler of the scriptures, on the full moon of Ashadh. Across India disciples honour their teachers on this day. In Braj it takes on its own great form at Govardhan, where the spiritual lineage is honoured through the memory of Sanatana Goswami and the joyous parikrama of the hill.

Mudia Purnima: the sadhus' mela at Govardhan

Mudia Purnima takes its name from mudia, the shaven head, because the Gaudiya Vaishnava sadhus shave their heads and dance the Govardhan parikrama in joy on this day, commemorating Sanatana Goswami, one of the Six Goswamis who lived and served at Govardhan. It is the Mudia mela, one of Govardhan's largest, the parikrama marg a river of pilgrims and saffron-clad sadhus, kirtan and joy in the monsoon green. It is a sight found nowhere else, the lineage of Chaitanya alive on the hill.

Who Sanatana Goswami was

Sanatana Goswami was the senior of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan, sent by Chaitanya to recover the leela-sites of Braj and write the theology, who lived much of his life at Govardhan in great renunciation, doing the parikrama daily. Mudia Purnima commemorates him and the sadhus' joyous head-shaving and parikrama honour his memory and his devotion. We tell his story as part of the day, so the mela is not just a crowd but a meeting with a great soul of Braj.

The Mudia parikrama and the gentler options

The heart of Mudia Purnima is the 21 km Govardhan parikrama, walked by lakhs in the monsoon and on this day above all the marg is overwhelming, beautiful and not for every body. The devout walk it barefoot through the rain and mud; the hill does not count blisters and there are honest alternatives.

⚠️ Honest cautions. The 21 km parikrama in the monsoon is overwhelming on this day; the marg is packed, wet and muddy, so judge your body honestly and use the vehicle or core option if needed. The hill is the deity, so circle it, never climb and do not pocket its stones. Monsoon rain, heat and humidity are real; carry water and rain cover. Monkeys are aggressive at the kunds. Give only at a temple hundi, not to touts.

Why do the sadhus shave their heads?

As an act of renunciation and joy in honouring Sanatana Goswami on his day; mudia, the shaven head, gives the mela its name. It is a striking, devotional sight.

Is the mela only for Gaudiyas?

The sadhus' head-shaving and parikrama are the Gaudiya heart of it, but the mela and the parikrama are open to all pilgrims. The whole hill keeps the day.

Is the Sanatana Goswami story historical?

His life among the Six Goswamis in the sixteenth century is the tradition's living history, central to the Gaudiya heritage of Braj. We tell it as the tradition holds it, with reverence.

How long is the Mudia parikrama?

About 21 km around Govardhan Hill, walked by lakhs on the day, often barefoot in the monsoon. A shorter core circuit is possible; for the full route see our Govardhan parikrama guide.

Can my elderly parents do the parikrama on Mudia Purnima?

Not the full 21 km in the monsoon crush; we arrange a vehicle parikrama or the Mansi Ganga, Mukharvind and Jatipura core. The hill blesses the bhava, not the blisters.

Should I walk barefoot?

Barefoot is the traditional, devout way, kept as a vow, but in the monsoon mud and the crush it is hard; able walkers without a vow often wear simple footwear. Judge honestly.

Is a vehicle parikrama allowed on the day?

Yes, e-rickshaw and car parikramas run and are honoured, especially for seniors and in the monsoon. We arrange the vehicle and time it around the crush.

How long does the parikrama take on Mudia Purnima?

On foot, a long day, longer in the crowd and mud; by vehicle, a couple of hours with stops; the core circuit, a few hours. We plan the timing.

What are the main stops?

Daan Ghati, Mukharvind, Mansi Ganga, Jatipura, Kusum Sarovar and Radha Kund. On Mudia Purnima they are at their most alive. We sequence the core for those not doing the full round.

Is the parikrama safe in the Mudia crowd?

With planning, yes; the risks are the dense, wet marg and fatigue over 21 km. Go early, keep together, carry water and rain cover and use the vehicle or core option if frail.

Can I start the parikrama at night or pre-dawn?

Yes, many walk through the night and the cooler pre-dawn is less crushed early; we arrange a guided start so you are not navigating the marg alone in the dark and rain.

How do I reach Govardhan for Mudia Purnima?

Mathura Junction is the railhead; Agra and Delhi the airports. Govardhan is a road trip from Mathura or Vrindavan. We arrange pickups around the festival diversions.

Will there be diversions and traffic?

Yes, heavy, with parking pushed far out and the approach on foot on the day. We plan pickups and approach around them.

What should I carry in the monsoon?

Rain cover, water, footwear for mud, a change of clothes and minimal valuables sealed against the wet. We advise for the day.

Can I do Mudia Purnima as a day trip from Delhi?

It is a long, wet, crowded day; for the parikrama and the mela we strongly prefer a Braj stay. We arrange both and advise.

Is the monsoon green worth it?

Yes, Braj in the monsoon is beautiful, the hill and the kunds green and full; the rain is part of the day's character, if you come prepared.

Is Mudia Purnima safe?

With planning, yes; the risks are the dense wet marg, the monsoon and fatigue over 21 km, not general danger. We plan the option that suits your body and the timing.

Are the monkeys a problem?

Yes, around Mansi Ganga, Kusum Sarovar and the kunds they are aggressive; keep valuables zipped inside, especially in the wet.

How do I avoid donation and panda scams?

Festival days draw aggressive collectors; genuine seva never corners you, so give only at a temple hundi and travel with a known local.

Is it safe for solo female travellers?

Braj is broadly safe and devotional; normal sense applies in the huge crowd and the monsoon. Travelling with a known local and group is best on the day.

Can I take a Govardhan stone home?

By old custom, no, not casually; a Giriraj shila is taken only with proper ritual and never trodden upon, as the hill is the deity. Many simply do parikrama and touch their head to the hill.

Why book Mudia Purnima with you rather than an OTA?

Because on the hill's most crowded monsoon day, matching the 21 km to your body, knowing the Goswami story and handling the rain and crush are a Brajwasi's craft. An aggregator drops you at a packed marg.

Are you local to Govardhan?

Yes, Gurudutt is a born Brajwasi guiding since 2018, who knows the parikrama, the mela and the Goswami heritage. Home ground.

Can you arrange a vehicle parikrama for elders?

Yes, a vehicle round or the core darshan, rest stops and a guide with you, keeping elders out of the worst monsoon crush. Tell us your group.

Can I combine Mudia Purnima with the Goswami temples?

Yes, Sanatana Goswami's samadhi is at Radha Damodar in Vrindavan, so the day pairs with the Goswami circuit. We build it.

Can I combine it with a wider Braj trip?

Yes, the Govardhan country and the Vrindavan temples pair over two to three days. We plan the route.

Do you offer a package for Mudia Purnima?

We tailor a Govardhan parikrama trip around the day rather than a fixed package, given the body's needs and the monsoon. Tell us your dates and group.

Can you provide a regional-language guide?

Yes, Hindi and English as standard, with Telugu, Tamil and other support on request.

How do I book?

Message us on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809 with your dates and group size; we reply within two hours, plan the parikrama option and secure your stay. Jai Giriraj, Radhe Radhe.
