What is Giriraj Govardhan and why is it revered?

Govardhan is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in all of Braj. The Purana describes Krishna lifting the hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cows of Braj from a storm sent by Indra, teaching them to honour Govardhan rather than Indra - the origin of Govardhan Puja and Annakut. The defining belief here is simple and important: the hill is itself the deity, Giriraj Ji. So devotees revere it, circumambulate it and traditionally neither climb on it nor casually carry away its stones.

The parikrama

The full parikrama is about 21 km on foot and takes most pilgrims 5-8 hours; many do it barefoot as a vow. The two main starting points are Daan Ghati, on the Govardhan-town side and Jatipura / Mukharvind, the "mouth" of Giriraj. Along the way you pass Mansi Ganga, Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, Kusum Sarovar and many shrines.

A tip from Gurudutt: Giriraj isn't counting your blisters. The barefoot 21 km is a beautiful vow if your body can take it - but I've seen too many elders attempt it out of guilt and end up unable to finish. For seniors, the vehicle parikrama or the four circuits of the Govardhan Shila at Radha Damodar in Vrindavan (held to equal one full parikrama), are honest, time-honoured alternatives. The devotion is in the heart, not the kilometre count.

Key stops on the parikrama

Daan Ghati marks where Krishna playfully demanded "toll" (daan) from the gopis. Mukharvind at Jatipura is the revered "face" of Giriraj, where abhishek is offered. Mansi Ganga is the sacred lake said to have been summoned by Krishna's mind. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, the holiest kunds in Braj, sit on the route, with Kusum Sarovar's sandstone ghats nearby.

Tips for your visit

Start before dawn, especially in summer and carry water. Choose the right form of parikrama for your group - full walk, vehicle parikrama for elders or a focused darshan. Don't climb the hill or pocket its stones; Giriraj Ji is the deity. Be ready to decline pressured "special puja" offers near Radha Kund. Pair Govardhan with Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar, which are on the route.

What is nearby?

On and around the parikrama route are Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, Kusum Sarovar, Mansi Ganga and the Mukharvind shrine. Barsana and Nandgaon are a short drive west.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Govardhan parikrama?

About 21 km on foot, taking most pilgrims 5-8 hours. A vehicle parikrama covers the same route faster for those who can't walk it.

Can I climb Govardhan Hill?

No. The hill itself is the deity, Giriraj Ji; pilgrims circumambulate it rather than climbing on it.

Where does the parikrama start?

Usually from Daan Ghati or from Jatipura / Mukharvind. Both are valid starting points.

Is there a parikrama option for senior citizens?

Yes - a vehicle or e-rickshaw parikrama covers the full route or elders can do the four-circuit Govardhan Shila parikrama at Radha Damodar in Vrindavan.

Is darshan free at Govardhan?

Yes, the parikrama and darshan are free. Any cost through an operator is for transport and guidance only.

What are the key stops on the route?

Daan Ghati, Mukharvind (Jatipura), Mansi Ganga, Radha Kund and Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar.

What is the story of Govardhan?

Krishna is believed to have lifted the hill on his finger to shelter Braj from a storm sent by Indra, teaching devotion to Govardhan - the origin of Govardhan Puja.

When is the best time to do the parikrama?

Start before dawn, especially in summer. Govardhan Puja (after Diwali) and Guru Purnima are major occasions but very crowded.

Can I take a Govardhan stone home?

Traditionally only with a vow and proper respect, since the stones are part of the deity; casually removing them is discouraged.

How far is Govardhan from Mathura?

About 22-26 km, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road.

Should I do the parikrama barefoot?

Only if you've taken that vow and your body can manage it - there's no obligation and footwear or a vehicle parikrama are equally accepted.

What is Daan Ghati?

The spot where, in the leela, Krishna playfully demanded a "toll" (daan) from the gopis; a major temple and a common parikrama starting point.

What is Mukharvind?

Mukharvind at Jatipura is the revered "face" of Giriraj, where milk and other offerings are made in abhishek to the hill.

What is Mansi Ganga?

A sacred lake on the route, said to have been summoned by Krishna's mind (mansi); pilgrims pause here for darshan and an evening aarti.

Is Radha Kund on the parikrama route?

Yes - Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, the holiest kunds in Braj, sit on the route and are a major stop.

Is Kusum Sarovar on the route?

Yes - the sandstone ghats of Kusum Sarovar are near Radha Kund, a scenic stop especially at sunset.

How long does the vehicle parikrama take?

Typically 2-3 hours with stops, depending on traffic and how long you spend at each shrine.

Is the route safe at night?

Many do the parikrama in the cool pre-dawn hours; go with a group or guide, carry light and keep to the main path.

What should I carry for the parikrama?

Water, comfortable footwear (or be prepared for barefoot if vowing), a hat and sunscreen and minimal valuables.

Are there facilities along the route?

There are shops, water points, prasad stalls and rest spots along the parikrama, busier near Daan Ghati and Radha Kund.

Is the parikrama suitable for families with children?

The full walk is long for small children; a vehicle parikrama or a focused core darshan suits families better.

Can women travellers do the parikrama comfortably?

Yes - it's a major pilgrimage; go early, ideally with a group or guide and take normal care of belongings.

What is Govardhan Puja / Annakut?

The festival, the day after Diwali, when devotees build a "hill" of food (annakut) and worship Govardhan, recalling Krishna lifting the hill.

How crowded is Govardhan on Govardhan Puja?

Extremely crowded - it's the hill's biggest day. Plan carefully and expect heavy footfall on the parikrama.

Is there an entry fee anywhere on the route?

No entry fee for the parikrama or the hill; donations at shrines are voluntary.

Beware of touts near Radha Kund?

Yes - some pressure visitors into paid "special pujas." Donation is personal and nothing is mandatory; we help you avoid this.

Can I do just part of the parikrama?

Yes - a core darshan of Daan Ghati, Mukharvind and Radha Kund is a meaningful shorter option for those short on time or energy.

What footwear should I wear if not barefoot?

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes; the route is long and partly uneven.

How hot does it get on the route?

Summers are very hot with little shade in places; pre-dawn starts and plenty of water are essential.

Is there a temple at the top of the hill?

No - the hill is not climbed; worship is done at shrines around it, like Mukharvind and Daan Ghati and along the parikrama.

Why is the hill not climbed?

Because Giriraj Ji, the hill, is itself the deity; walking on the deity is considered disrespectful in the tradition.

What is the significance of the kunds on the route?

Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are the holiest ponds in Braj, embodying Radha and Krishna's love; a major spiritual highlight of the parikrama.

How do I reach Govardhan from Vrindavan?

About 25 km, roughly 45 minutes by road; we arrange the drive and the right start point.

Is there parking at Govardhan?

Yes, near the main start points like Daan Ghati and Jatipura; we arrange the closest practical drop-off.

Can I combine Govardhan with Barsana and Nandgaon?

Yes - they're a short drive west; a two-day Braj plan covers Govardhan one day and Barsana-Nandgaon the next.

Do I need a guide for the parikrama?

Not essential, but a Braj-local guide explains each stop, manages the route and timing and arranges the right parikrama for your group.

What is the dress code?

Modest, comfortable clothing suitable for a long walk; cover shoulders and knees at the shrines.

Is the parikrama done clockwise?

Yes - the parikrama is performed keeping the hill to your right (clockwise), in the traditional manner.

What is Apsara Kund / Naval Kund?

Smaller sacred kunds also found along or near the route; the parikrama passes several lakes and shrines beyond the main ones.

Can elderly pilgrims do a meaningful Govardhan darshan without walking 21 km?

Yes - the vehicle parikrama or four circuits of the Govardhan Shila at Radha Damodar in Vrindavan, are accepted, honest alternatives.

Is photography allowed?

Generally along the route and at the hill, yes; avoid photographing inside sanctums and follow posted rules.

When is Guru Purnima at Govardhan?

Guru Purnima (usually July) is a major parikrama day, drawing large crowds to circumambulate the hill.

How early should I start in summer?

Before dawn - ideally beginning the walk by 4-5 AM to finish before the day's heat.

Are there medical or rest facilities?

Basic rest spots and shops exist along the route; carry your own water and any medication and plan breaks.

Is Mansi Ganga worth stopping at?

Yes - it's a serene lake with an evening aarti; a meaningful pause on the parikrama.

Can I do the parikrama in monsoon?

Yes, though parts can be wet and slippery; many love the green, cooler landscape, but take care underfoot.

What's the most common mistake pilgrims make?

Underestimating the 21 km and the heat - and elders attempting barefoot out of guilt. Plan the right form for your body.

Is Govardhan part of your tours?

Yes - Govardhan and its parikrama are on our Braj routes, with the right walking or vehicle option for your group.

How does Experience My India help with a Govardhan visit?
