What is ISKCON Vrindavan and why is it famous?
ISKCON Vrindavan, properly the Krishna Balaram Mandir, is one of the most loved temples in Vrindavan and one of the principal temples of the worldwide Hare Krishna movement. It is famous for its immaculate white-marble shrine, its three sets of deities and above all for the continuous, high-energy kirtan that fills the courtyard through the day. It also holds the samadhi mandir of Srila Prabhupada, who founded ISKCON and built this temple, which makes it a place of pilgrimage for devotees from every corner of the world.
It stands in the Raman Reti area, the soft-sanded belt where, in the Braj tradition, Krishna and Balaram crawled and played as children, so the ground itself carries the childhood leela.
Who built ISKCON Vrindavan and what is its history?
The Krishna Balaram Mandir was established in 1975 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. He built it to fulfil his wish for a centre in the holy land of Vrindavan and he installed the deities of Krishna-Balaram, Radha-Shyamsundar and Gaura-Nitai. After he passed away in 1977, his samadhi mandir was raised within the complex and it remains one of the most visited shrines on the grounds.
What are the darshan and aarti timings?
ISKCON keeps a full, disciplined daily schedule built around its aartis, with a long afternoon break while the deities rest.
Session | Timing |
Mangala Aarti | About 4:30 AM |
Morning darshan | About 4:30 AM - 12:30 PM |
Afternoon break | About 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM (deities rest) |
Evening darshan | About 4:00 PM - 8:30 PM |
Sandhya (evening) Aarti | About 6:30 PM |
A tip from Gurudutt: If you can manage one early start on your trip, make it the Mangala Aarti here. At 4:30 in the morning the crowd is small, the kirtan is at its most powerful and you feel the temple wake up. For everyone else I plan the evening Sandhya Aarti, which is fuller but just as moving. |
What is the experience like?
The marble courtyard, the painted ceilings and the three altars are beautiful, but it is the sound that people remember: the kirtan barely stops and many visitors simply sit and let it carry them. Respectful conduct matters here, the schedule is followed to the minute, so arriving a little before an aarti is wise.
How do you reach ISKCON Vrindavan?
ISKCON sits on Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg in the Raman Reti area, reachable by car, auto or e-rickshaw, with parking nearby.
From | Distance | Time |
Vrindavan town | 3-5 km | 10-20 min |
Mathura Junction | 12-13 km | 30-45 min |
Delhi (Yamuna Expressway) | 150 km | 3-3.5 hrs |
Agra | 70 km | 1.5 hrs |
Entry, dress code and what to carry
Entry is free for everyone, including foreign visitors and donations are welcome. Wear modest, traditional clothing and leave shoes at the racks outside. The grounds are clean and well organised and Govinda's, the temple's vegetarian restaurant, serves prasad-style meals if you want to eat there.
When is the best time to visit?
Come for the Mangala Aarti at dawn or the evening Sandhya Aarti for the fullest experience, ideally between October and March. Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Gaura Purnima and Holi are celebrated grandly here, with very large crowds, so plan festival visits with extra time.
A tip from Gurudutt: Most first-time visitors miss Prabhupada's samadhi mandir on the grounds, tucked away from the main altars. Give it ten quiet minutes, it is one of the most peaceful corners in all of Vrindavan and it is the reason this temple exists. |
What other temples are nearby?
ISKCON pairs naturally with the rest of Vrindavan. The marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show is close by and the historic Banke Bihari Temple is a short ride into the old town. To plan a full day, see our Prem Mandir guide, our Banke Bihari temple guide and our roundup of the best places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan.
