What is Kesi Ghat and why is it special?

Kesi Ghat is the loveliest stretch of the Yamuna in Vrindavan, where Krishna, in the Bhagavata tradition, slew the horse-demon Keshi sent by Kansa, which gives the ghat its name. Above its sandstone steps rises a skyline of old painted havelis, the picture most people carry away of Vrindavan and at dusk the steps fill for the Yamuna aarti, lamps are floated on the water and the whole scene becomes the most beautiful evening in Braj. If you ask a local for the single best aarti to see, this is the honest answer.

It is also a key stop on the Vrindavan parikrama and devotees perform riverside rites here.

The evening Yamuna aarti

As dusk falls, priests offer lamps and chant to the Yamuna, revered as the goddess Yamuna Devi, sister of Yama and one of Krishna's queens, while devotees float diyas on leaf boats across the dark water. Many visitors take a small boat from the bank to watch the aarti from the river itself, which is the finest view of all. The aarti is generally held around 6:30 PM, a little earlier in winter, so reconfirm the time on the day.

A tip from Gurudutt: Take a boat for the aarti. From the water, with the painted havelis behind the lamps and the diyas drifting past, it is the single most beautiful half hour in Vrindavan and far calmer than the packed steps. Agree the boat price before you step in. And keep a firm hand on your phone and glasses: the monkeys here are bold and quick and they snatch daily.

An honest word about the Yamuna

A local owes you the truth alongside the reverence. The Yamuna is our mother-goddess and threads the whole leela and she is also, for much of the year, badly polluted, with low fresh flow in the lean months. We hold both at once. The aarti and the devotion are genuine and beautiful and if you take a dip, do so with care, in a group and avoid the deeper current.

The history and the skyline

The present ghat was rebuilt in the 17th century by Queen Lakshmi Devi of Bharatpur and the steps and the surrounding havelis carry the elaborate Rajasthani style, jaali work, arches, lotus and floral motifs, that defines old Vrindavan. The line of small temples and shrines along the bank adds to the charm and the whole frontage is at its most photogenic at sunrise and sunset.

How do you reach Kesi Ghat?

Kesi Ghat is on the Yamuna in central Vrindavan, a short ride from Banke Bihari and the old-town temples, just east of Chir Ghat.

What does the painted-haveli skyline at Kesi Ghat look like?
