What is Kokilavan Shani Dev Dham?
Kokilavan Shani Dev Dham, near Nandgaon at Kosi Kalan, is the foremost temple of Shani Dev in Braj, set in Kokilavan, the forest of the cuckoo, said to be the only surviving van of the old Braj woodland. It marks one of the tenderest meetings in the tradition: where Krishna gave Shani Dev his longed-for darshan. Because Krishna himself blessed Shani here, devotees believe that worship at Kokilavan brings relief from the troubles of Shani, the dreaded Shani Dosha and the Sade Sati period, and so pilgrims come in great numbers, above all on Saturdays.
The dham spreads over some twenty acres, with the Shani temple at its heart, the Surya Kund, a cow shelter, and shrines to Giriraj, Hanuman, Shiva and others.
The story: Krishna as the koel
In the living tradition, when Krishna was born and the gods gathered at Nandgaon to bless the infant, Shani Dev came too, but Yashoda, fearing that Shani's gaze might harm her child, would not let him near. Shani, who only ever does his duty, was wounded and withdrew to the forest in penance. Krishna, moved by his devotion, came and gave him darshan in the form of a koel, a cuckoo, and so the forest became Kokilavan. Krishna blessed Shani to reside here and promised that whoever takes his darshan at this place will be freed of their troubles, and Shani, in turn, asked Krishna to remain nearby with Radha.
A tip from Gurudutt: Come on a Saturday if you can bear the crowds, it is Shani's day and the dham is at its most powerful, but arrive early. Bathe in the Surya Kund first, then take darshan, then walk the parikrama of the van, about three kilometres, before buying mustard oil and prasad. Two honest words: the monkeys here are bold, so do not carry prasad before the parikrama; and some pandas press hard for donations, give only what you wish, with devotion, never under pressure. |
Worship, the parikrama and Shani Dosha
Pilgrims come to Kokilavan above all for relief from Shani Dosha and the Sade Sati, the testing seven-and-a-half-year period of Saturn. The customary worship is to bathe in the Surya Kund, take darshan of the black-stone Shani Dev and his guru Vankhandi Baba, offer mustard oil, and walk the parikrama of the van, the roughly three to three-and-a-half kilometre circuit known as the sava-kos, or 1.25 Kosiya, parikrama. Free community kitchens, bhandaras, serve meals to all, especially on Saturdays and Shani Amavasya.
