What is Nand Bhavan and why is it special?

Nand Bhavan, the home of Nanda, is the great temple of Nandgaon, standing atop Nandishwar hill where Nanda Maharaj settled with Yashoda, Krishna and Balaram after moving from Gokul. It is here that Krishna spent his boyhood, and so the village and its temple hold a tender, domestic place in the leela. What makes Nand Bhavan unique is its sanctum: it is the only temple where the foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda, are worshipped alongside Krishna and Balaram, with Radha, Revati and Rohini also enshrined. To take darshan here is to take darshan of Krishna's whole family.

The temple, built in the nineteenth century by Raja Rupa Singh, has three domes and ceilings painted with Krishna's pastimes, and it keeps an intimate, homelike feel rather than a grand one.

How Nandgaon became Krishna's home

In the tradition, Nanda and the elders of Gokul, alarmed by the demons Kansa kept sending against the children, decided Gokul was no longer safe and moved the community to higher, safer ground. Nanda chose Nandishwar hill and settled at Nandgaon, while his close friend Vrishabhanu, Radha's father, settled across the valley at Barsana. So Nandgaon became Krishna's boyhood home, and the twin villages of Krishna and Radha have faced each other ever since, joined every year by the Lathmar Holi.

Nandishwar hill and the temple

The hill itself is sacred: in the living belief of Braj, Lord Shiva longed to witness Krishna's childhood pastimes, and Krishna granted that he take the form of the hill, so the hill is Nandishwar, the lord of Nandi, Shiva himself. The Narasimha temple stands at its base. The climb to Nand Bhavan is by a flight of steps, and the temple at the top, with its painted ceilings and family of deities, feels less like a palace and more like a remembered home, which is exactly why many pilgrims linger longer than they planned.

A tip from Gurudutt: Go up in the early morning, when the birds are louder than the people and the hilltop air is cool. Nand Bhavan rewards slowness: sit a while in the courtyards and let the domestic feel of the place, Krishna's family home, settle on you. On the way, do not miss Pan Sarovar nearby, the lake where Krishna's cows are said to have drunk. And remember the family of deities here, take darshan of Nanda and Yashoda too, not only Krishna.
