What is Madan Mohan and why does it matter?

Madan Mohan is the oldest temple in Vrindavan, and to stand before it is to stand at the very beginning of the town's temple history. It was built around 1580, when Vrindavan was still largely forest, under the guidance of Sanatana Goswami, the senior of the six Goswamis whom Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sent to recover the lost holy places of Braj. With Govind Dev and the temples of the other Goswamis, it is counted among the seven Goswami temples, the Sapt Devalaya, the foundation of Gaudiya Vrindavan.

The deity is Krishna as Madan Mohan, the one whose beauty enchants even Madan, the god of love himself, worshipped with Radha and Lalita.

The story of the temple

In the tradition, the deity of Madan Mohan was first worshipped in the age of Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, then lost for centuries. Sanatana Goswami recovered the deity and worshipped it in great simplicity on the Dwadashaditya hill. The temple itself was built by a grateful merchant, Ram Das Kapur of Multan, whose stranded boat, it is said, was freed after Sanatana's blessing, and who raised this temple from the profits of the journey. The Radha and Lalita deities were later sent from Puri. It is a story of devotion answered by devotion.

Around 1670, as Aurangzeb's forces threatened Braj, the original deity was carried to safety in Rajasthan and now resides at Karauli; the deity worshipped at Vrindavan today is its pratibhu-murti, its sacred representative.

A tip from Gurudutt: Climb up to Madan Mohan in the early morning, when few people are about, and give it time. This is not a grand, busy temple like the marquee names; it is quiet, old and simple, and its power is in that simplicity and its history. From the hilltop the view over the Yamuna and old Vrindavan is lovely. Pay your respects at Sanatana Goswami's samadhi here too, and let a guide tell you the story of Ram Das Kapur's boat, it brings the place alive.

The hill, the deity and the seven Goswami temples

The temple stands on the Dwadashaditya Tila, the hill of the twelve suns, where in the leela twelve suns are said to have warmed Krishna after he emerged cold from subduing the serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna nearby. The red-sandstone temple in the Nagara style rises some fifty to sixty feet, its spire visible across the town. Madan Mohan, Govind Dev and the temples of the other Goswamis together form the Sapt Devalaya, the seven temples around which devotional Vrindavan grew. See our Govind Dev guide and our guides to the Sapt Devalaya temples.
