What is the Radha Rani Temple and why is it special?
The Radha Rani Temple, known locally as Shriji or Ladli Lal, sits atop Bhanugarh hill in Barsana and is one of the most beloved temples in all of Braj. It is special for a reason that sets it apart from almost every other temple: here Radha is worshipped as the primary deity, with Krishna beside her, which is why the very name Ladli Lal honours the beloved daughter before the beloved son. Barsana is held in tradition to be Radha's town, draped over four hilltops that devotees regard as the four faces of Brahma.
The town also greets you in Radha's name. The universal Braj greeting, Radhe Radhe, puts Radha before Krishna, because in the bhava of Braj she is held to be the very way to him and nowhere is that felt more strongly than in Barsana.
The history and the structure
In tradition, Barsana was the home of Radha's father Vrishabhanu and mother Kirti and a palace at the foot of the temple steps honours the family. The present hilltop temple is a red-and-white sandstone structure in the Mughal-era style, with arches, domes, carved pillars and painted interiors, the red and white stone is often read as the love of Radha and Krishna. Its appearance is that of a grand palace crowning the hill, with sweeping views over Barsana.
The climb: steps, lift and car route
Reaching the main temple means climbing about 200 to 225 steps from the base, where the palace of Vrishabhanu stands. There is now a lift for those who cannot manage the stairs and if you come by car you can drive most of the way up and walk a short final stretch. Palki (palanquin) bearers are also available.
A tip from Gurudutt: For elderly pilgrims I always arrange the car route to near the top or the lift, rather than the full climb, the steps are steep and get very slow in a festival crowd. If you are able, though, climb at least part of the way on foot in the early morning; the view of Barsana opening up below you is one of the quiet joys of Braj. |
What are the darshan timings?
The temple keeps morning and evening darshan, opening with the rising sun and an aarti and again in the evening when the lamps are lit. The exact hours shift by season, so confirm them on the day. Morning darshan is peaceful; evening, with the hilltop view and the chants, feels especially complete.
Radhashtami and Lathmar Holi
Two days bring Barsana fully alive. Radhashtami, Radha's appearance day on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami at midday, is the temple's supreme festival, when the shrine is dressed in flowers and lights and Chappan Bhog is offered and the hill fills with pilgrims. And in the days before mainstream Holi, Barsana hosts the famous Lathmar Holi, when the women of Barsana playfully drive off the men of Nandgaon with sticks, the most photographed Holi on earth. Both are spectacular and both bring an enormous crush, so plan them with care.
How do you reach Barsana?
Barsana is in the western part of Braj, about 45 km from Mathura, an easy drive that pairs well with Nandgaon, Krishna's boyhood town facing Barsana across the fields.
From | Distance | Time |
Mathura | 45 km | 1.25-1.5 hrs |
Vrindavan | 40-50 km | 1.25-1.5 hrs |
Nandgaon | 8-10 km | 20-25 min |
Delhi | 120-130 km | 3-3.5 hrs |
Entry, dress and tips
Entry is free for everyone, with donations optional. Wear modest, traditional clothing suited to a hill climb and carry minimal belongings, footwear stands are available at the base. The best season is October to March, when the climb is comfortable; summers are hot and the climb is hard at midday.
What is nearby?
Barsana pairs naturally with Nandgaon and the two villages mirror each other in the Lathmar Holi tradition. Maan Mandir and the quieter hilltop shrines reward a slower visit.
