What is Ter Kadamba and why visit it?

Ter Kadamba is a quiet grove set about a kilometre and a half off the main road, a little past Nandgaon, the home of Krishna. Its name joins ter, to call, with kadamba, the tree, for in the tradition this is where Krishna, at the close of the day, would climb a kadamba tree, play his flute and call his cows home to him, counting them as they came. Centuries later it became one of the most loved bhajan sthalis of Braj, the place where Srila Rupa Goswami sat and wrote. To come to Ter Kadamba is to come to a place where Krishna's own leela and the great devotion of his saints meet under the same trees.

It is secluded and peaceful, away from the crowds and many feel it among the sweetest places in all the love-country.

Krishna's flute and Rupa Goswami's pen

In the tradition, two devotions meet at Ter Kadamba. The first is Krishna's own: here, the Brajwasis say, he would climb a kadamba tree at evening and call his cows with his flute, so that the very name of the grove remembers that calling. The second came long after, when Srila Rupa Goswami, the great teacher of the Gaudiya tradition, sent by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to recover the holy places and write of Radha and Krishna, made this his bhajan sthali, sitting beneath a kadamba tree to compose his books day and night. For the Gaudiya tradition there is a loved belief that a single round of the holy name chanted at Ter Kadamba carries the merit of many hundreds of thousands of rounds, told to explain how Rupa Goswami, who had so little time to spare from his writing, yet perfected his devotion. And there is a tender story, kept as tradition, that Radha herself, in the form of a little girl, once brought food to Rupa Goswami when he was so absorbed in writing that he had forgotten to eat.

We carry that hundred-thousandfold figure as the devotional belief it is, rather than as a measured claim.

A tip from Gurudutt: Ter Kadamba is, to my mind, the hidden jewel of the Nandgaon side and the long-promised stop I most want pilgrims to make: it is secluded, simple and profoundly peaceful. Because it sits about a kilometre and a half off the road, you will want your own or a hired vehicle and it is easy to drive past, so a guide who knows the turning is worth a great deal. Come for the quiet above all. The month of Kartik and Rupa Goswami's Appearance Day, fill the grove with chanting; on an ordinary morning it is almost empty, which is its own gift.

Ter Kadamba on the Barsana-Nandgaon route

Ter Kadamba lies on the Nandgaon side of the belt that runs from Barsana to Nandgaon, a little past the town, so it is naturally visited with Nandgaon and with the love-sites along the way, Sanket and Prem Sarovar. For the Gaudiya tradition it pairs especially with the Goswami temples and bhajan sthalis of Vrindavan, the fruit of the very devotion Rupa Goswami practised here. See our Nand Bhavan Nandgaon guide and our Sanket guide for the sites nearby.
