Step one: how many days?

This is the decision everything else hangs on, so be honest about your time before you dream up a route.

• One day. Enough for the essentials of Vrindavan, or a rushed Mathura and Vrindavan together. Doable from Delhi and back, but you will see buildings and miss the town.

• Two days. The sweet spot. Vrindavan on one day, Mathura and Gokul on the other, with the evening aarti and a morning darshan you would otherwise lose.

• Three days or more. Adds Govardhan and the villages of Barsana and Nandgaon, or simply lets you slow to Braj’s own pace, which is not wasted time.

Step two: the season

October to March is the comfortable window, cool enough for the temples and the walking. Kartik in autumn is the most devotional season. Summer from April is hot and hard on the parikramas but quieter; the monsoon is green but humid. Festivals, above all Holi and Janmashtami, are magnificent and fill the town beyond capacity, so decide early if you want one. Step three: how you travel

Where you start decides the leg to Braj. From Delhi it is about 180 kilometres, three and a half hours by the Yamuna Expressway, or two hours by train to Mathura Junction; our distance from Delhi to Vrindavan guide covers all modes. From further afield, fly to Delhi and drive on. Once in Braj, a private car is worth it: it waits at each temple, carries your phones where they are barred inside, and saves an hour a day of haggling with rickshaws. Step four: where you stay

Stay in Vrindavan. It is central, it puts you at the temples before the Delhi day trippers arrive, and the evening atmosphere is half the reason to come. Rooms range from simple ashram lodging to comfortable hotels; those right by the temples are convenient but wake before dawn with the lanes. Book ahead for festivals. Step five: how wide to go

Within one day, keep to Vrindavan, or Vrindavan and a little of Mathura. With two, add Mathura and my own Gokul, the tender infancy sites. With three, reach Govardhan for the parikrama and the villages of Barsana and Nandgaon. A useful rule: one new town per day beyond Vrindavan, no more, or the driver eats the darshan.

The order within a day that saves your trip

Two rules matter more than any list. First, do the temples that close at dusk, above all Nidhivan, in daylight, and keep Prem Mandir for after dark when it is lit. Second, start at the opening. Banke Bihari at its first darshan is a fraction of its later crowd, and the whole day flows better when the busiest temple is behind you early. Plan your rest for the midday hours, when the temples close anyway, rather than fighting them.

Your pre-trip checklist

• Book your stay and your car or train ahead, earlier for festivals.

• Pack modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered, and footwear you can slip off quickly.

• Carry cash in small notes for rickshaws, offerings and vendors.

• Plan to leave phones in the car, since several temples bar them inside.

• Check festival dates and the day of the week, especially if you plan to add the Taj, which is closed on Fridays.

• Guard your glasses and phone from the monkeys near the ghats and old temples.

The honest bit

Plan on honest ground. Every temple darshan in Vrindavan and across Braj is free, and there is no official VIP darshan pass at Banke Bihari or anywhere else; anyone selling you one, in person or online, is selling nothing, and first timers are targeted most. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's nightly raas is a cherished living belief rather than a documented fact. The Yamuna is revered and honestly polluted. And no temple keeps a fixed clock: hours shift with the season and on festival days, so build your plan with margin and reconfirm on the day rather than trusting a schedule.
