The story: the universe in Krishna’s mouth

Brahmand Ghat takes its name and its fame from one of the most wonderful of all the stories of the child Krishna, and it happened at this very spot. The little Krishna, playing with the other children of Gokul, ate a handful of mud, and the children ran to tell Mother Yashoda. She came, worried and a little cross, and asked her son to open his mouth so she could see. Krishna opened his mouth, and within it Yashoda saw not mud but the whole universe, the Brahmand: the sun and the moon and all the stars, the earth and the seas and the mountains, all the worlds and all of time, and herself and Gokul within it too. For a moment she beheld that her little son was the Supreme Lord who holds all creation within him. Then, in his mercy, he drew the veil of his loving illusion over her again, so that she forgot what she had seen and simply held her child. This is the revelation the ghat is named for, Brahmand, the universe, and it is why this quiet place on the Yamuna is so profound.

The meaning of the ghat

This little story holds one of the deepest truths of Braj, and it is worth pausing on. At Brahmand Ghat the infinite Lord, who contains the whole universe, chose to be the child of Yashoda, small enough to sit in her lap and be scolded for eating mud. The same mouth that held all the stars drank his mother’s milk. This is the wonder that Braj holds dearest: that God became a child for love, hiding his infinity so that Yashoda could love him not as the Lord of all worlds but simply as her son. To stand at Brahmand Ghat is to stand where the whole universe was once revealed and then lovingly hidden again, and it moves the devotees deeply. The ghat is also linked to Akrura, Krishna’s uncle, who is said to have had a vision of the divine here before taking Krishna away to Mathura.

Brahmand Ghat is open all day and night, but its beautiful aarti is held morning and evening, and the times shift a little between the summer and the winter, as the box above and the table below set out. The morning aarti is quiet and lovely; but it is the evening aarti, around seven, that is the great experience, when the lamps are offered to the Yamuna and floated glowing upon the dark water. The evening aarti and the floating lamps

The evening aarti at Brahmand Ghat is the moment not to miss, and I plan visits around it. As the light fades over the Yamuna, the great lamps of fire are offered to the river with the ringing of bells and the singing of hymns, and small leaf boats bearing lit lamps, the diyas, are set floating out upon the dark water, drifting and glowing like stars come down to the river, a fitting echo of the very universe that Krishna once revealed here. It is a peaceful and deeply moving sight, far quieter than the great crowded aartis of the city ghats, and to sit on the steps of Brahmand Ghat as the diyas float out is one of the loveliest experiences in all of Gokul. Location and how to reach Brahmand Ghat

Brahmand Ghat lies at Jogipur Bangar, in Gokul, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, pin code 281305, on the bank of the Yamuna. Gokul is about ten to fifteen kilometres from Mathura by road, an easy drive of half an hour or a little more, and the ghat sits within the Gokul area, close to the other holy places of Krishna’s infancy such as the Gokul Nath temple and the Nand Bhavan. The nearest railway junction is Mathura, well connected across the country, and the nearest airport Delhi, about a hundred and eighty kilometres away. The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit, and within the day the evening, for the aarti and the floating lamps, is the loveliest time at Brahmand Ghat. The great days here are Janmashtami, the birth of Krishna, when all of Gokul rejoices, and Holi, and the ghat is especially beautiful on the full moon nights.
