Mathura to Gokul distance

Gokul lies close to Mathura, on the far bank of the Yamuna to the south east. The distance is about 12 to 15 kilometres depending on the route and the drive takes around 30 minutes in normal traffic. It is an easy half day trip from Mathura, or a natural stop on a wider Braj tour.

The route options

There are three main road routes, each a little different in distance and traffic. The table compares them.

The shortest route by distance is not always the fastest; NH 44, though a little longer, is often quickest when the Agra Road is busy. A local driver will choose the best on the day.

Various options to reach Gokul

You can reach Gokul from Mathura in several ways. The table sets them out.

The various ways to reach Gokul from Mathura. A private car is easiest for most.

Way to reach

Best for

Private taxi or car

The easiest; door to door and it waits while you visit

Auto-rickshaw

A cheap and quick option for the short hop

E-rickshaw

Short local stretches within Gokul

Bus or shared tempo

The cheapest, but less convenient and slower

For most visitors, a private car is by far the simplest: it comes to your Mathura hotel, waits at Gokul while you take darshan and brings you back or on to the next town. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers it.

Why go to Gokul

Gokul is where the infant Krishna was raised in secret and it is one of the most tender places in all of Braj. See Nand Bhavan, the home of his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda; Raman Reti, the soft sacred sand where pilgrims roll in devotion; the ancient Chaurasi Khamba; and Brahmand Ghat on the Yamuna. It is quieter than Mathura and Vrindavan and deeply moving. For the temples and their stories, see our Gokul Mathura Vrindavan guide.

Combining Gokul with Mathura

Because it is so close, Gokul pairs naturally with a Mathura visit. See Mathura’s Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning, then drive to Gokul for the afternoon, or the reverse. A private car makes the pairing effortless. For more of Mathura, our top places to visit in Mathura guide has the list and a full three town trip is set out in our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for the trip. Gokul is busiest around Janmashtami and Nandotsav, when it is joyous but crowded. On any day, mornings and late afternoons are calmest and the drive quickest. Our guide to the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan has the seasons.

The honest bit

A short honest note. Darshan at Gokul, as everywhere in Braj, is free; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass. The distances and times above shift with live traffic, so treat them as a guide and confirm on the day. The Yamuna at the Gokul ghats is revered and, honestly, polluted. Told plainly, Gokul is an easy, rewarding and free half day from Mathura.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

Gokul is my birthplace and no one knows the road to it better. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We take you door to door by the best route on the day, wait while you visit and tell you the stories of my home as we go. Our car is clean and air conditioned, our fare is one clear number with no charge for free darshan, our knowledge is lifelong.

Tip from Gurudutt: give Gokul the late afternoon. The light on Raman Reti and the quiet of Nand Bhavan near dusk are the loveliest of the day and the drive back to Mathura is easy in the cooling evening.
