Why go to Gokul
Gokul is where the infant Krishna was raised in secret and it is one of the most tender places in all of Braj. See Nand Bhavan, the home of his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda; Raman Reti, the soft sacred sand where pilgrims roll in devotion; the ancient Chaurasi Khamba; and Brahmand Ghat on the Yamuna. It is quieter than Mathura and Vrindavan and deeply moving. For the temples and their stories, see our Gokul Mathura Vrindavan guide.
Combining Gokul with Mathura
Because it is so close, Gokul pairs naturally with a Mathura visit. See Mathura’s Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning, then drive to Gokul for the afternoon, or the reverse. A private car makes the pairing effortless. For more of Mathura, our top places to visit in Mathura guide has the list and a full three town trip is set out in our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package.
The best time to visit
The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for the trip. Gokul is busiest around Janmashtami and Nandotsav, when it is joyous but crowded. On any day, mornings and late afternoons are calmest and the drive quickest. Our guide to the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan has the seasons.
The honest bit
A short honest note. Darshan at Gokul, as everywhere in Braj, is free; no one should charge you for it or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass. The distances and times above shift with live traffic, so treat them as a guide and confirm on the day. The Yamuna at the Gokul ghats is revered and, honestly, polluted. Told plainly, Gokul is an easy, rewarding and free half day from Mathura.
