The temples and their history
Here is the heart of this guide: the great temples a package covers and the real history behind each.
Mathura: the birthplace
In Mathura, the Krishna Janmabhoomi stands on the very site of the prison of Kansa where Krishna was born; the temple here has been destroyed and rebuilt many times across the centuries and its history is the history of Braj’s devotion itself. Beside it, the grand Dwarkadhish Temple was built in 1814 by a devotee of the town and remains Mathura’s principal temple. Our guide to the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura tells its full story.
Gokul: the childhood
In Gokul, Nand Bhavan is the home of Nanda, Krishna's foster father and nearby at Mahavan the ancient Chaurasi Khamba, the temple of eighty four pillars, is believed to mark Nanda's palace, where Krishna's naming ceremony took place. At Raman Reti the child played in the sacred sand and at Brahmand Ghat Yashoda is said to have seen the whole universe in his mouth. Our Gokul walk through Krishna's childhood covers these in full.
Vrindavan: the youth
Vrindavan holds the greatest wealth of temples. Banke Bihari, its most beloved, houses a deity revealed by the saint Swami Haridas at Nidhivan centuries ago; the present temple was built in 1864. Radha Raman, one of the oldest, holds a swayambhu, self manifested deity, with an akhand fire that has burned continuously since 1542. Prem Mandir, the vast marble temple, was raised by Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj, its foundation laid in 2001 and its doors opened in 2012. The ISKCON Krishna Balaram temple was built in 1975 and Govind Dev, a grand historic temple, was built in 1590 by Raja Man Singh. Some original deities, such as those of Govind Dev and Madan Mohan, were carried to Rajasthan for safety in the time of Aurangzeb and their pratibhu or replica forms are worshipped here today. Our guide to Banke Bihari tells the temple's story in full.

How many days for the three towns
How much of this history you walk depends on your days. A same day package covers the essential darshan of Mathura and Vrindavan. Two days let you add Gokul and take the temples calmly. Three days give each town its due and add the wider Braj of Govardhan and Barsana. The temples reward time, so give the history room to settle rather than rushing from gate to gate. Tell us your days and we shape the package to fit.
The best time to visit
The cooler months of October to March are the most comfortable for the three towns. Kartik in autumn is the most devotional season and the great festivals, Janmashtami and Nandotsav in Gokul, Radha Ashtami at Barsana and Holi across Braj, are magnificent but very crowded. Whichever you choose, a package built around the temple hours gives you the calmest darshan.
The honest bit
History deepens the darshan and honesty protects it. Every temple in Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul is free; no honest package charges you for darshan and there is no official VIP darshan pass for Banke Bihari. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one each morning. Where original deities were moved to Rajasthan, as at Govind Dev and Madan Mohan, we say so plainly rather than pretend. Govardhan is circled, never climbed and the Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. Met truthfully, the history only grows richer.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I have guided Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews. We WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Our packages cover all three towns and their temples and our guides tell you the real history, the true dates and the honest stories, not the invented ones. A guide from here is not there to buy you access, since darshan is free; a guide is there to open the centuries behind each temple. This is our home and its history is ours to share.
Tip from Gurudutt: ask your guide for the story of each temple before you enter it. Standing before Radha Raman's akhand fire, knowing it has burned since 1542 or before Banke Bihari, knowing how Swami Haridas revealed the deity, turns a quick darshan into a moment you never forget.
