📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Delhi to Vrindavan is about 180 kilometres by road and takes roughly 3 hours 25 minutes by the Yamuna Expressway, which is the fastest route despite being the longest. By train, services such as the Shatabdi and the Taj Express run from Delhi to Mathura Junction in around two hours, and Vrindavan is a further 12 kilometres. Buses take four to five hours. There is no airport at Vrindavan. It works as a long day trip, but an overnight stay is far better. To travel from Delhi with a car and driver, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

  • The Yamuna Expressway is fastest, at roughly 3 hours 25 minutes.

  • The shortest route, by the old highway, is the slowest.

  • Buses take four to five hours from the Delhi terminals.

  • There is no airport at Vrindavan; Delhi is the gateway.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them, and most of them come through Delhi. This is the most asked question in all of Braj travel, and most of the answers online give you a number and stop there. The number is easy. What actually decides your day is which route you take, what time you leave, and whether you go by road or rail. Here is all of it, honestly, from someone who watches these arrivals every week. Book the journey with our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service. To see our Mathura Vrindavan Tour Packages, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Distance from Delhi to Vrindavan by road

Three routes run south from Delhi, and the table gives them. Note the pattern before you choose.

Distance from Delhi to Vrindavan by road. Times vary sharply with your departure hour; verify on the day.

Route

Distance

Time

Notes

Via the Yamuna Expressway

180 km

3 hr 25 min

Fastest and smoothest; this route has tolls

Via Noida to Greater Noida Expressway and Yamuna Expressway

183 km

3 hr 26 min

Practically identical; useful from east Delhi

Via the Chennai to Delhi Highway

166 km

3 hr 48 min

Shortest on the map, slowest in practice

The shortest route is the slowest by more than twenty minutes, and in bad traffic by much more. The old highway runs through towns, junctions and slow vehicles; the Yamuna Expressway is a controlled access road where you keep moving. Take the expressway, pay the toll, and arrive less tired. Which of the two expressway approaches you use depends simply on where in Delhi you start: the Noida route suits the east and south east of the city, the direct approach suits the rest.

Delhi to Vrindavan by car

Driving is how most people make this journey, and it is the option I recommend, because a car gives you something the train cannot: it stays with you in Braj. Vrindavan’s lanes are narrow and crowded, the temples are scattered, and a vehicle that waits at each one saves you an hour a day and a great deal of arguing with rickshaw drivers.

  • Self drive. Straightforward on the expressway. Keep a working FASTag or cash for the tolls, and fill up before you leave the city.

  • Taxi or cab with a driver. Better for most families: you arrive fresh, and the driver knows where a car can actually stop in Vrindavan. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service covers Delhi pickups, airport transfers and the days in Braj.

  • What it costs. A one way cab, a round trip and a full day package are all priced differently, and rates move with fuel and season, so take a current quote rather than an old figure from a forum. Our Vrindavan trip cost guide breaks down what a fair total looks like.

When to leave. This matters more than the route. Leaving Delhi before the morning rush can cut close to an hour off the same journey; leaving in the middle of the evening peak can add well over one. Aim to be past the Noida stretch early, and you will be in Vrindavan for lunch.

New Delhi to Vrindavan by train

The railway is quick and comfortable, and for solo travellers or couples it is often the better choice. The key point is that trains do not go to Vrindavan itself in any practical sense: Vrindavan has only a small branch station with minimal service, so travellers use Mathura Junction, a major stop on the main line, about 12 kilometres away.

  • Shatabdi Express (12002). One of the fastest services on the route, reaching Mathura Junction in around two hours from New Delhi.

  • Taj Express (12280). The long standing favourite for this run, convenient for a day trip and well timed for a morning arrival.

  • Others. A great many trains heading south from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stop at Mathura Junction; check the current timetable when you book, as timings and stops are revised.

From Mathura Junction, take a prepaid cab or auto for the last 12 kilometres, or ask us to meet you at the platform. A word of caution: the auto drivers at the station quote high to visitors and will often press a hotel or a shop on you. Fix your fare before you sit, or arrange the pickup in advance.

Delhi to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from the Delhi terminals, most usefully from Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar, taking around four to five hours depending on the service and the traffic. They are the cheapest way to travel and perfectly comfortable in the better air conditioned coaches, but they set you down on the highway or at Mathura, so you still need local transport in the end. For a family with luggage, the saving rarely justifies the extra handling.

Is there an airport at Vrindavan?

No. Delhi is the gateway airport for the whole of Braj, and Vrindavan is about 150 to 180 kilometres from it depending on which terminal you land at and which route you take. If you are flying in from elsewhere in India or abroad, land at Delhi and drive on the same day; there is no need to spend a night in the capital, and the drive is easy. Agra has an airport with limited service, from where Vrindavan is only about an hour and a half.

Day trip or overnight?

You can do Vrindavan from Delhi and back in a day, and thousands do. But I will be honest with you about what that day looks like: leaving very early, roughly seven hours in a vehicle, and reaching the temples in the middle of the day when several of them are closed for the midday break. You will see the buildings and miss the town.

Stay one night if you possibly can. It costs little, and it gives you the two hours that matter most in Braj: the evening aarti on the Yamuna, and Banke Bihari at the morning opening the next day, before the crowds. Add Prem Mandir after dark, when the marble is lit, and you have seen the real Vrindavan rather than a rushed circuit of it. Our Mathura Vrindavan hotels page has vetted stays, and our plan your perfect Vrindavan Mathura trip guide sets out the days.

If you are seeing Mathura too

Most pilgrims coming from Delhi want both towns, and Mathura sits directly on the road, about 12 to 15 kilometres before Vrindavan. That makes it easy to stop at the Krishna Janmabhoomi on the way in, or at Vishram Ghat for the evening aarti on the way out. For the full two town journey, see our Delhi to Mathura Vrindavan distance and travel options guide, which covers planning both together.

When to travel

October to March is the comfortable season. Two warnings for this particular road, though. Winter fog on the Delhi corridor in December and January is serious rather than inconvenient, and expressway pile ups in fog are a real danger, so wait for it to lift rather than setting out into it. And weekends and long holidays fill the Yamuna Expressway with Delhi traffic; a weekday departure is calmer in both directions. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the seasons, and our festivals of Braj page the calendar, since Holi and Janmashtami turn this road into a procession.

The honest bit

Honest words for the Delhi road. When you arrive, every temple darshan in Braj is free, and there is no official VIP darshan pass at Banke Bihari or anywhere else; day visitors from Delhi are among the touts' favourite targets precisely because they are in a hurry. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's nightly raas is a cherished living belief rather than a documented fact. The Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. On the road itself, the expressway carries tolls, the shortest route is the slowest, and December fog is a genuine hazard. At Mathura Junction, fix your auto fare before you sit.

Our VIP darshan in Vrindavan guide explains the fake pass trade in full.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, and I have met pilgrims off this road and off the Mathura platform since 2018: more than 50,000 of them, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a local adds to a journey this simple is the arrival rather than the drive: a car that then stays with you through Vrindavan’s lanes, darshan timed around the midday closures instead of against them, no auto haggling at the station, no touts selling passes for something that is free, and someone who tells you honestly that one night changes the whole trip. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: leave Delhi before six in the morning, not at nine. The same road that takes three and a half hours at dawn can take five in the late morning, and the difference is not the distance but the Noida stretch. Leave early and you will reach Vrindavan while the temples are still open for the morning session, which is the whole point of coming.

Mathura Trip Plan: A Step by Step Itinerary for 1, 2 and 3 Days

A good Mathura trip plan starts with your days: one day covers the birthplace city itself, two adds Gokul and Vrindavan, and three brings in Govardhan and the villages. Begin at the Krishna Janmabhoomi in the morning, keep the midday for rest while the temples close, and take Vishram Ghat at dusk for the Yamuna aarti. October to March is the best season. Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple stands in Baldeo, about 18 to 20 kilometres south east of Mathura, and honours Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, lovingly called Dauji. It is the great Balarama temple of Braj, with a black stone deity worshipped beside his consort Revati, and it is most famous for the Huranga, the boisterous colour play held the day after Holi. It opens morning, afternoon and evening, with a midday break. Darshan is free. To visit Dauji with a Braj-born guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Vrindavan Trip Planner: Build Your Itinerary Step by Step

To plan a Vrindavan trip, settle five things in order: how many days you have, the season, how you will travel, where you will stay, and whether you want Mathura and Gokul as well. Two days is the sweet spot for most pilgrims, October to March is the best season, and a private car with a stay in Vrindavan makes the smoothest trip.
