I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them and a great many come from Jaipur, since the two cities are an easy half day apart and the new expressway has made the drive quicker than ever. Jaipur and Braj also share a deep bond, because several of Vrindavan's original deities reside today in Rajasthan. Here is the drive, both to Mathura and on to Vrindavan and how to plan it well. Distance from Jaipur to Mathura by road
Three routes connect Jaipur and Mathura and the new expressway has changed the picture. The table gives them.
Jaipur to Mathura routes by road. Times vary with traffic; verify on the day.
Route | Distance | Time | Notes |
Via the Jaipur to Bandikui Expressway and NE 4 | 239 km | 4 hr 42 min | Fastest; the new expressway route |
Via NH 21 | 238 km | 5 hr 11 min | The established highway, a little slower |
Via the Agra to Jaipur Road | 233 km | 4 hr 44 min | Shortest, via the older Bikaner to Agra road |
The new Jaipur to Bandikui Expressway is the one to take. Though a touch longer than the shortest road, it is quicker and far smoother, a controlled access highway that keeps you moving and it forms part of the growing expressway network linking Rajasthan to the Braj region. Pay the toll and arrive less tired.
Distance from Jaipur to Vrindavan
Most pilgrims from Jaipur are bound for Vrindavan as much as Mathura and Vrindavan lies a little beyond Mathura, about twelve to fifteen kilometres further north. The table gives the routes on to Vrindavan itself.
Jaipur to Vrindavan routes by road. Times vary with traffic; verify on the day.
Route | Distance | Time | Notes |
Via the Jaipur to Bandikui Expressway and NE 4 | 247 km | 4 hr 47 min | Fastest; the new expressway route |
Via NH 21 | 247 km | 5 hr 20 min | The established highway |
Via NE 4 | 302 km | 4 hr 47 min | Longer in distance but similar in time |
As the table shows, the extra distance to Vrindavan adds only a little time over the drive to Mathura, so if Vrindavan is your goal you can drive there directly rather than stopping in Mathura first and take Mathura on another day of your trip.
The Jaipur and Braj connection
There is a bond between Jaipur and Vrindavan that many pilgrims do not know and it makes this particular journey meaningful. In a time of danger to the Vrindavan temples centuries ago, several of the town’s most sacred original deities were carried to safety into the kingdoms of Rajasthan and they reside there to this day. The most famous is Govind Dev Ji, whose magnificent temple in the Jaipur City Palace complex is among the most beloved in Rajasthan and whose original seat is the great Govind Dev Ji temple in Vrindavan. Other Vrindavan deities rest elsewhere in Rajasthan, at Karauli and beyond. So a pilgrim travelling from Jaipur to Vrindavan is, in a sense, retracing a sacred link between the two and I often tell Jaipur pilgrims this as we drive, for it deepens the journey.
How to travel from Jaipur
A private car is the most comfortable way to make this trip and the one I recommend, because it carries you the whole way and then stays with you through Braj, where the temples are scattered and a waiting vehicle saves an hour a day. Trains run from Jaipur to Mathura Junction, which sits on the main line, in around three to four hours on the faster services and this is a good option for solo travellers, with a short cab or auto for the final stretch into Vrindavan. Buses run too, though they are slower and less comfortable for a family. For most groups the car wins and our Vrindavan trip cost guide sets out what a fair total looks like.
When to leave and when to visit
Leaving Jaipur early in the morning is worth the effort, both to clear the city before its traffic builds and to reach Braj while the temples are still open for the morning darshan, before their long midday break. October to March is the comfortable season for the drive and for Braj alike and December, when this route is busiest, brings the added care of morning fog on the Rajasthan and Braj roads, which can slow an early start, so do not race it. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the seasons.
Planning your Braj visit
Coming this far, give Braj at least a full day and ideally two: one for Vrindavan’s temples and one for Mathura and my own Gokul. A single long day can take in the essentials of both towns if that is all your trip allows, but two days lets you keep the evening aarti and the early morning darshan that are the heart of a Braj visit. Our one day Mathura Vrindavan itinerary sets out a single day and our Mathura trip plan the fuller shape, with stays on our Mathura Vrindavan hotels page.
The honest bit
Honest words for the Jaipur road. When you reach Braj, every temple darshan is free and there is no official VIP darshan pass at Banke Bihari or anywhere else; travellers arriving from afar are among the touts' favourite targets precisely because they are tired and in a hurry. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's nightly raas is a cherished living belief rather than a documented fact. The Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. On the road itself, the new expressway carries tolls and December fog on this route is a real consideration for an early start.

Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I have met many a Jaipur family off this road since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims in all, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a local adds to a journey this straightforward is the Braj end rather than the drive: a car that stays with you through Vrindavan’s lanes, darshan timed around the midday closures, no auto haggling at the station, no touts selling passes for what is free and the story of the Jaipur deities told as we go. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: take darshan of Govind Dev Ji in Jaipur before you set out and then of his original seat in Vrindavan when you arrive. Few pilgrims connect the two, but doing so turns a simple drive into a pilgrimage that joins Rajasthan and Braj and it is the loveliest way to make this particular journey.
