📌 QUICK ANSWER
Barsana Radha Rani Temple (Shri Ji Mandir) opens at 5:00 AM in summer and 5:30 AM in winter, with darshan from 5 AM to 2 PM and again from 5 PM to 9 PM (times vary by season). Entry is free. The temple sits atop Bhanugarh Hill roughly 200-250 stone steps or a 3-minute ropeway ride from the base. From Vrindavan, it's 43.3 km (about 1 hour 14 minutes via NH 44). Experience My India includes Barsana in multi-day Braj packages starting from ₹3,999 per person. Plan your visit at +91-7302265809.
Most Vrindavan itineraries focus on the same circuit Banke Bihari, ISKCON, Prem Mandir. Barsana Radha Rani Temple rarely makes the list and that's the first mistake. Barsana is the birthplace of Radha Rani, which makes the Shri Ji Mandir here perched on Bhanugarh Hill with 200-plus stone steps or a new ropeway ride to reach arguably the most significant Radha shrine in all of Braj.
I'm Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi. Since 2018, I've guided 50,000+ pilgrims across the entire Braj circuit, including regular visits to Barsana. I know this hill across every season, every festival and every crowd pattern.
In this guide, you'll get the full aarti and darshan timing table for both summer and winter, an honest breakdown of the steps versus the ropeway, all three driving routes from Vrindavan with real travel times and the crowd patterns that most guides skip. Everything you need to plan a visit that actually works.
Why Barsana Radha Rani Temple Is Different From Other Vrindavan Temples
Almost every temple in Vrindavan is dedicated to Krishna. Barsana's Radha Rani Temple is dedicated to Radha and that single difference shapes everything about how the visit feels.
The temple is also called Shri Ji Mandir or Ladli Ji Mandir ('Ladli' is an affectionate name for Radha). Barsana itself is known locally as the childhood home of Radha, which makes this a tirtha yatra of a different kind. pilgrims come here not to seek blessings for a specific wish, but to pay respects at Radha's own home ground.
The setting reinforces this. The temple sits on a hilltop at roughly 250 metres above the surrounding plains, which means the climb up (or the ropeway ride) is part of the darshan experience. The town below is quieter than Vrindavan with fewer souvenir stalls, less traffic and the hill gives you a panoramic view of Braj countryside that no flat-ground temple can offer. Experience My India includes Barsana as a dedicated Same Day Govardhan Barsana Tour Package in addition to any 3-day or 4-day Braj package. Call +91-7302265809 to add it to your itinerary.
Barsana Radha Rani Temple History
According to Braj tradition and the Puranas, Barsana is the birthplace and childhood home of Radha Rani. The hill on which the temple stands, Bhanugarh Hill, takes its name from King Vrishabhanu (also known as Bhanudeva), Radha's father. The town's name, Barsana, is itself a contracted form of 'Brahma Sarana', meaning the refuge of Brahma.
The original temple on this hill is credited to King Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, who is said to have established several shrines across Braj. The current structure was rebuilt in 1675 AD. The temple is built in red sandstone with a style that reflects a blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural influence, distinct from the white marble of the newer Vrindavan temples.
In August 2024, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a 210-metre ropeway at Barsana, making the temple formally accessible for pilgrims who cannot manage the steps. The ropeway carries 12 gondolas, each seating up to 6 people and the full ascent takes around 3 minutes.
Barsana is also globally associated with Lathmar Holi, a centuries-old tradition where women from Barsana play Holi with lathis (wooden sticks) in a celebration that draws visitors from across India and abroad. This happens in Phalguna (typically February or March) and is one of the most crowded times to visit Barsana.
Barsana Radha Rani Temple Timings Summer and Winter
The darshan windows at Radha Rani Temple follow a structured aarti schedule that shifts between summer (April to September) and winter (October to March). Arriving without checking these timings is the single most common mistake pilgrims make; many show up at 3 PM to find the temple closed until 5 PM.
Event / Aarti | Summer Timings (Apr - Sept) | Winter Timings (Oct - Mar) |
Temple Opens & Mangal Aarti | 5:00 AM | 5:30 AM |
Shringar Aarti (Deity adornment) | 7:00 AM | 8:00 AM |
Rajbhog Aarti & Afternoon Closure | 2:00 PM (temple closes) | 1:30 PM (temple closes) |
Evening Reopens & Sandhya Aarti | 5:00 PM (aarti at 6:30 PM) | 5:00 PM (aarti at 6:00 PM) |
Shayan Aarti & Temple Closing | 8:45 PM - 9:00 PM | 8:30 PM - 9:00 PM |
What this means in practice: the darshan windows are roughly 5 AM to 2 PM (summer) or 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM (winter) in the morning and 5 PM to 9 PM in the evening. The afternoon gap is 2.5-3.5 hours depending on season. Use this for lunch, a visit to nearby Nandgaon (20 km from Barsana) or rest at your hotel.
Barsana Radha Rani Temple closing time today is 9:00 PM on most evenings, after the Shayan Aarti. Entry is free throughout. Experience My India sequences every Barsana day-add to arrive at the hill base before 8:30 AM giving pilgrims the Shringar Aarti slot before the crowd builds. Call +91-7302265809 to plan your timing.
Barsana Radha Rani Temple Steps and Ropeway
One of the most searched questions for this temple is: "How many stairs are in Radha Rani Barsana?" The answer is 200-250 stone steps from the base of the hill to the temple entrance. The exact count varies slightly depending on which entrance lane you take, since there are a few stairways converging near the top.
Method | Time to Ascend | Best For | Cost |
Stone steps (on foot) | 15-25 minutes at a steady walk; 30-40 minutes at a slow/rest pace | First-time pilgrims, those physically comfortable with stairs | Free |
Ropeway (cable car) | Approx. 3 minutes one-way | Senior citizens, families with young children, those with mobility concerns | Nominal fee (one-way or return tickets available at base) |
Palki / doli (palanquin) | Similar to ropeway in duration, variable | Elderly or unwell pilgrims who prefer to be carried | Negotiated on-site |
Is the Barsana Ropeway open? The ropeway was inaugurated in August 2024 and has been operational since. Like all mechanical facilities, it may occasionally be closed for maintenance if your trip depends on ropeway access, it's worth calling the temple or checking with Experience My India at +91-7302265809 before you travel.
For pilgrims travelling on our 2 Days Vrindavan Barsana Tour Packages, Experience My India advises senior citizen groups to use the ropeway and walk down the steps (which is easier on the knees than ascending). Younger visitors often do the reverse: walk up the steps and take the ropeway down.
Vrindavan to Barsana Distance and How to Reach
Barsana is 43-44 km from Vrindavan, which translates to roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes by road depending on traffic and which route you take. Here are the three main options:
Route | Distance | Travel Time | Notes |
Via NH 44 and Barsana Road | 43.3 km | 1 hr 14 min | Fastest route; avoids congestion on Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj Marg use this as the default |
Via Radha Kund Road and Barsana Road | 42.1 km | 1 hr 21 min | Slightly shorter distance but adds a few minutes; avoids congestion, scenic through Radha Kund |

Ground Truth What Nobody Tells You About Barsana Radha Rani Temple
'Many steps' is vague. 200-250 is the honest range, depending on which approach stairway you use. At a comfortable walk with 2-3 rest stops, most adults complete the ascent in 20-30 minutes. If that's too much, the ropeway is a genuine alternative, not a shortcut for the unfit.
There is no VIP darshan at Radha Rani Temple Barsana entry is free and there's no paid fast-track queue. Families who arrive before 8 AM on weekdays usually find the darshan lines short enough without any VIP access.
The afternoon closure (2:00 PM in summer, 1:30 PM in winter) is widely underestimated. Pilgrims who combine Barsana with a morning Nandgaon visit sometimes arrive at Barsana at 1:45 PM and find the gates closed. Experience My India always sequences the morning slot first to avoid this.
Photography inside the sanctum is restricted. The hilltop and surrounding views are freely photographable, which is actually where the most dramatic shots come from. Don't miss the view from the top before you enter the temple.
Taxis from Vrindavan to Barsana typically charge ₹800-₹1,400 for a one-way trip depending on the vehicle type and whether you're returning. If you're adding Barsana as a day trip, a round-trip private cab from Vrindavan costs roughly ₹1,600-₹2,500 total. Experience My India includes this transfer inside every 3-day and 4-day package call +91-7302265809 to check what's included in your specific booking.
