How far is Govardhan from Mathura?

The distance from Mathura to Govardhan is about twenty two to twenty three kilometres by the shortest road, which means a drive of roughly thirty seven to forty minutes by the Mathura Govardhan Road, running west from the city across the Braj countryside. It is an easy and short country drive and Govardhan is close enough that it is very often joined to a day in Mathura or seen as a half day trip on its own. Govardhan to Mathura distance

The journey the other way, from Govardhan to Mathura, is naturally much the same distance of about twenty two to twenty four kilometres, taking roughly forty to forty two minutes by road, again chiefly by the Mathura Govardhan Road. So whichever way you travel, the two are only a short drive apart and you may plan Govardhan around your Mathura darshan in either order to suit the day and the temple timings. How to travel between Mathura and Govardhan

For a country drive of about twenty two kilometres, a private car or taxi is by far the easiest and most comfortable way, taking you from the city to the sacred hill in well under an hour and letting you set your own pace around the darshan and the parikrama. Shared jeeps, tempos and local buses do run between Mathura and Govardhan for the budget traveller, but they are slower, crowded and less frequent and they do not wait for you at the sites. An auto rickshaw can be hired but is slow and exposed over this distance. For a pilgrimage that takes in Govardhan and perhaps more of Braj, a car with a driver who knows the roads and the temple hours is the sensible choice. What is Govardhan?

It helps to know what awaits you at the end of the short drive. Govardhan is not a temple but a sacred hill, worshipped as Giriraj, the king of hills and as a living form of Krishna himself, for it is the very hill that the child Krishna lifted upon his little finger to shelter the people of Braj from the storm of Indra. Because it is the Lord in the form of the mountain, pilgrims do not climb Govardhan but walk reverently around it, circling its whole length on the twenty one kilometre parikrama, along which lie its holy temples and kunds. What to see at Govardhan

Having made the short drive, there is much to see and do at Govardhan. The heart of it is the parikrama, the walk of about twenty one kilometres around the whole sacred hill, along which lie almost all its holy places. The chief among these are the Daan Ghati temple, a main starting point; the Jatipura Mukharvind, the sacred face of Giriraj where devotees offer milk; the holy tanks of Radha Kund and Shyam Kund; the lake of Mansi Ganga in the town centre with its evening aarti; and the beautiful sandstone Kusum Sarovar. Seeing Govardhan with the rest of Braj

Because Govardhan is so close to Mathura, it fits easily into a wider Braj pilgrimage. From Govardhan, Barsana, the village of Radha, is only about twenty kilometres further, with Nandgaon a little beyond, so the western towns are naturally joined into a day; and Mathura, with Vrindavan and my own Gokul across the Yamuna, lies just to the east. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the best for a visit to Govardhan, pleasant for the drive and above all for the parikrama, which is a long walk, punishing in the summer heat and lovely in the cool. The early morning is the finest and coolest time to begin. The great days are Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, the very festival of the lifting of the hill and Guru Purnima, the Mudia Poono; these are magnificent but immensely crowded. Honest words for this short journey. The distance is small, about twenty two kilometres, so do not let any driver tell you it is far or charge a large fare; agree the price first. Darshan everywhere at Govardhan is free and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in Braj, whatever a tout may promise. The most important thing, held dear by every Brajwasi: the hill is circled, never climbed, for to set foot on Govardhan is to tread on Krishna himself. The full parikrama is twenty one kilometres on foot, a real undertaking, so wear easy footwear or walk barefoot as the devout do, carry water, start early and pace yourself; the elderly may see the chief temples by car.
