What is the Giriraj Mukharvind at Jatipura?

The Shri Giriraj Ji Mukharvind at Jatipura is the sacred point on the Govardhan hill worshipped as the mukharvind, the lotus mouth or face, of Giriraj Govardhan. To understand it you must understand the heart of Govardhan: the hill is not worshipped as a place but as a living form of Krishna himself, as Giriraj, the king of hills, the very mountain that the child Krishna lifted upon his little finger to shelter Braj from the storm of Indra. And just as a deity has a face that receives the loving gaze and the offerings of the devotee, so Giriraj Govardhan has his mukharvind, his sacred face and the chief of these is here at Jatipura. In the tradition of Shri Vallabhacharya, the Pushti Marg, this is the shringar sthali, the place of the adornment of Giriraj and it is here that the Lord as the hill is bathed, adorned, fed and worshipped each day as a living being. The worship of Giriraj: the milk and the flowers

The heart of a visit to the Jatipura Mukharvind is the worship of Giriraj with milk and it is one of the most moving sights in all of Braj. Because the hill is the living Lord, the devout do not merely look upon the Mukharvind but serve it as they would serve Krishna himself: thousands of pilgrims each day pour milk over the sacred face of Giriraj in loving abhishek and offer flowers, sweets and their prayers, so that the Mukharvind is bathed continually in the milk and love of the devotees. To pour milk upon Giriraj here, with your own hands, is held to be a darshan and a seva of the deepest kind, a direct touching of the Lord in his form as the mountain that sheltered Braj. Many come with a particular prayer, a manorath and have special worship performed. It is a place not of watching but of doing, of serving the Lord with your own hands and that is its special sweetness.

The Chhappan Bhog and the seva

As befits a centre of the Vallabh tradition, the seva, the loving service, offered to Giriraj at the Jatipura Mukharvind is rich and constant. Each day the Lord as the hill is offered the Chhappan Bhog, the fifty six dishes and the Chhattis Vyanjan, the thirty six varieties of food, prepared and offered with devotion and on the great days the Annakut, the mountain of food, is raised before Giriraj in memory of the feast the Brajwasis offered the hill when Krishna first bade them worship it. Throughout the year many special manorath pujas and sevas are held here, sponsored by devotees for their particular prayers. The rhythm of the seva follows the Pushti Marg way, the Lord woken, bathed, adorned, fed and rested through the day like a beloved child and to witness it is to see the tender, homely worship of Krishna that Shri Vallabhacharya taught.

Why it is called Jatipura

The name Jatipura has a gentle story. It is told that a holy man, a sadhu, who lived at this spot bore the name Yati and because this was the dwelling place of Yati, people began to call the place Yatipura, the town of Yati. And in the Braj bhasha, the sweet dialect of this land, the sound ya is often spoken as ja, so Yatipura became Jatipura and by that name it is known to this day. It is a small reminder that these holy places carry, in their very names, the memory of the saints who lived and worshipped here and Jatipura, now a great centre of the Vallabh tradition, keeps the name of that old ascetic in its own.

Jatipura, Vallabhacharya and Shrinathji

Jatipura is a principal centre of the Vallabh sampradaya, the Pushti Marg founded by Shri Vallabhacharya and the baithaks, the sacred seats, of Shri Vallabhacharya and of his son Shri Vitthalnath ji are here, marking where these great teachers sat and taught. This is fitting, for Govardhan is the very heart of the Pushti Marg: it was here that Shrinathji, the beloved form of Krishna as the young lifter of Govardhan, self manifested from the hill and was worshipped at Govardhan for long years. In the troubled reign of Aurangzeb, the deity of Shrinathji was carried away to safety in Rajasthan, to Nathdwara, where he is worshipped to this day; but the sacred hill from which he arose and the Mukharvind of Giriraj at Jatipura, remain the eternal ground of that devotion and the followers of the Pushti Marg hold Jatipura among the dearest places on earth.

The Mukharvind and the Govardhan parikrama

The Jatipura Mukharvind is one of the chief points of the Govardhan parikrama, the sacred walk of about twenty one kilometres around the whole hill and for many pilgrims it is where the parikrama from the Jatipura side begins or is centred. Around it lie a wealth of other sacred spots, the Naval Kund and Apsara Kund, the Shrinathji temple, the cave of Raghav Pandit, the Indra Kund and Surabhi Kund and Airavat Kund, the Mukut Mukharvind, the Sinduri Shila where Radha is said to have applied her sindoor and, higher on the hill, other darshan of Shrinathji. So the Mukharvind is not seen alone but as the heart of a whole sacred landscape along the parikrama. Timings and darshan

The Jatipura Mukharvind follows the darshan rhythm of the Pushti Marg, opening in the morning and remaining open through much of the day for the milk offering and darshan of Giriraj, with the sequence of sevas from the morning waking to the evening rest and it is busiest and most joyful in the cool morning hours and on festival days. Because the published hours and the seva times shift with the season and the festivals, I do not fix exact clock times here that might mislead you; ask on the day or let us confirm the current darshan and seva timings for you before your visit, so that you come when Giriraj may be served and seen. The great days of Govardhan Puja, after Diwali and Guru Purnima are the most magnificent here of all.

Location and how to reach the Jatipura Mukharvind

The Shri Giriraj Ji Mukharvind stands at Jatipura, on the Govardhan hill, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on the Govardhan parikrama path. Govardhan town lies about twenty two kilometres west of Mathura and about twenty six from Vrindavan, an easy drive and Jatipura is on the parikrama a little way from the town centre. The nearest railway junction is Mathura, well connected across the country and the nearest airport Delhi, about a hundred and fifty kilometres away. Most pilgrims visit as part of a day at Govardhan and its parikrama and a private car is much the easiest way to reach Jatipura and the sites around. The table gives the distances.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit and within the day the cool morning is the loveliest time for the darshan and the milk offering, before the heat and the greatest crowds. The supreme days here are Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, the very festival of the lifting of the hill, when Giriraj is worshipped across all of India and the Annakut is raised and Guru Purnima, the Mudia Poono, when hundreds of thousands walk the parikrama. The honest bit

Honest words on the Jatipura Mukharvind. Darshan is free and no official VIP pass exists here or anywhere in Braj; the milk and flowers you offer and any seva, are your own devotion, so beware anyone demanding a large fee for special darshan. The most important thing, held dear by every Brajwasi: Giriraj is worshipped and the hill is circled on the parikrama, never climbed, for to tread on Govardhan is to tread on Krishna himself. If you offer milk, buy it from the honest local sellers and pour it with love; the place can be busy and slippery with the milk, so tread with care. Confirm the darshan and seva timings before you come, especially around the festivals when the crowds are vast.
