What is Gahvar Van?

Gahvar Van, sometimes written Gehvar Van, is the sacred forest that lies at the very heart of Barsana, the hill village that is the birthplace of Radha, about forty three kilometres from Mathura. It is one of the most revered of all the sacred groves of Braj, and it holds a place unique among them, for tradition tells that this is the only forest in all of Braj that was decorated and created by Radha Rani with her own hands. For this reason it is exceptionally dear to her, her own garden and grove, and it is known as Nitya Vihar, the place of eternal togetherness, where Radha and Krishna are said to be always together in their sweet pastimes, with never a moment of separation. It is a secluded, green and deeply peaceful place, wrapped around the hills of Barsana, and to the devout it is among the most precious spots in all the land of Krishna. The forest made by Radha’s own hands

What sets Gahvar Van apart from every other grove of Braj is the belief, held dear here, that Radha Rani herself created and adorned this forest with her own hands. Where the other forests of Braj are the Lord’s creation, this one is Radha’s own, planted and tended and decorated by the beloved of Krishna, and so it carries her touch and her love in every leaf and flower. This is why it is called her Nitya Vihar, the eternal pleasure grove: it is the secluded place where Radha and Krishna withdraw from all the world into their own sweet togetherness, and where, the Rasik saints tell, they remain together even now, forever young, meeting each moment as though for the first time. To enter Gahvar Van is, in the faith of Braj, to enter Radha’s own private garden of love, and that is why it moves the devotee so deeply and asks of the visitor a special reverence.

The sacred sites within Gahvar Van

Gahvar Van is not a single shrine but a whole sacred landscape, and several revered sites lie within its green folds, strung along the Barsana parikrama. The chief of them is the Radha Sarovar, the beautiful lake of Radha at the heart of the forest, one of its holiest spots, where ancient sites of the raas leela have been found. Above rises the Maan Mandir, on the hill, which recalls Radha’s maan, her tender loving anger, when Krishna came to coax her from her sulking; and near it the Mor Kuti, the peacock pavilion, from which the whole forest and Barsana can be seen. Here too is the Vallabhacharya Baithak, where the great saint is said to have recited the Bhagavat a hundred and eight times, and the bhajan kutirs, the huts of penance, of Rasik saints such as Nagridas who lived and sang here. Radha Sarovar

At the heart of Gahvar Van lies the Radha Sarovar, the lake of Radha, one of the most sacred and beautiful spots in the whole forest. Its still waters, wrapped in green, are held especially dear, for they are Radha’s own, and near its banks ancient sites of the raas leela, the divine dance of Radha and Krishna, have been discovered, some of them ten feet below the ground, testifying to the great antiquity of the worship here. To sit quietly by the Radha Sarovar, in the peace of the forest, away from all crowds, is one of the loveliest and most contemplative experiences in all of Braj, and pilgrims who love Radha count it among their dearest.

Maan Mandir and the Mor Kuti

Above the forest, on the hillside, stand the Maan Mandir and the Mor Kuti, two of Gahvar Van’s most beloved sites. The Maan Mandir recalls one of the tenderest of the Radha Krishna pastimes: Radha’s maan, her loving, sulking anger, when, hurt by some slight, she withdrew, and Krishna came humbly to coax and console her and win her back. It is a leela of the depths of divine love, and the temple marks the spot. Nearby the Mor Kuti, the peacock pavilion, named for the peacocks who dance in the forest, offers a beautiful high view over the whole of Gahvar Van and Barsana. From here the Rasik saints would gaze upon the sacred grove and sing, and it remains a place of contemplation and of the loveliest views in Barsana.

Gahvar Van has been, through the centuries, a place of the deepest devotional realisation, drawing the Rasik saints, those who worship through the sweet love of Radha and Krishna, to live and sing within it. Here lived and did their bhajan such saints as Nagridas, Kishori Ali and Swami Parimal Das, and their huts remain among the trees. It was in Gahvar Van, tradition tells, that Radha and Krishna appeared before the great poet Raskhan, Krishna gently pressing the feet of Radha in loving service, a vision that fed his immortal verses. And Shri Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu experienced this forest as the divine Keli Kunj, the pleasure grove where Radha and Krishna are ever in their vihar, their eternal play. This is why Gahvar Van is so treasured by the devotional traditions of Braj: it is a forest saturated with the realised love of the saints.

Gahvar Van is woven into the sacred geography of Barsana, and its sites lie along the Barsana parikrama; the pilgrim walks around the holy hills of Radha’s village. Above the forest, on the summit of the Brahma Parvat, stands the great Radha Rani temple, the Shriji temple, the crowning glory of Barsana, and the forest spreads below and around the hills crowned by it. So a full visit to Barsana takes in both: the climb to the Radha Rani temple on its height, and the walk through Gahvar Van and its sites below, ideally as part of the parikrama. Location and how to reach Gahvar Van

Gahvar Van lies at Barsana, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, about forty three kilometres north west of Mathura and about forty five from Vrindavan, an easy drive across the Braj countryside. It is most often visited as a day trip from Mathura or Vrindavan, usually together with the Radha Rani temple and the other sights of Barsana, and with Nandgaon only eight to nine kilometres beyond. The nearest railway junction is Mathura, and the nearest airport is Delhi. A private car is much the easiest way, for Barsana is not close to the rail line, and the forest and its sites involve walking and some climbing. The table gives the distances.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit, for the forest and its sites involve walking and climbing, pleasant in the cool and hard in the summer heat. The early morning is the loveliest and most peaceful time in the green quiet of the van. The great days of Barsana are Radha Ashtami, Radha’s birthday in late summer, when the village is at its most joyful, and the world famous Lathmar Holi of spring, when Barsana is thronged; these are magnificent but very crowded.
