How far is Govardhan from Barsana?

The distance from Govardhan to Barsana is about twenty kilometres by the shortest road, which means a drive of roughly thirty six to forty minutes by the Barsana Road across the Braj countryside. Both are holy towns of the western part of Braj, set among fields and low hills, and the road between them is an easy country drive. This closeness is a blessing for the pilgrim, for it means the sacred hill of Govardhan and the village of Radha can be joined on a single day without any long journey. Barsana to Govardhan distance

The journey the other way, from Barsana to Govardhan, is naturally much the same distance of about twenty kilometres, taking roughly forty to fifty minutes depending on the route, again chiefly by the Barsana Road. So whichever you see first, the other is only a short drive away, and you may take them in either order to suit your day and the temple timings. The table gives the return routes.

How to travel between Govardhan and Barsana

For a country drive of about twenty kilometres, a private car or taxi is by far the easiest and most comfortable way, taking you from one town to the other in well under an hour and letting you set your own pace around the darshan and the parikrama. Shared jeeps and local buses do run between the towns of Braj for the budget traveller, but they are slower, less frequent and less comfortable, and they do not wait for you at the temples. An auto rickshaw can be hired for the trip but is exposed and slow over this distance. For a pilgrimage that takes in both towns and perhaps more of Braj in a day, a car with a driver who knows the roads and the temple hours is the sensible choice. Seeing Govardhan and Barsana together

Because they are so close, Govardhan and Barsana are nearly always seen on the same day, and it helps to know what each holds so you can plan your time. Govardhan is the sacred hill, Giriraj, that Krishna lifted to shelter Braj, circled by pilgrims on its long parikrama and never climbed, with its temples and holy kunds such as the Daan Ghati, the Mukharvind, Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar. Barsana is the hill village where Radha was born, crowned by the beautiful Radha Rani temple on its height, with the great Kirti Mandir of Radha’s mother below, and it is the home of the world famous Lathmar Holi. A fine plan is to give the morning to Govardhan and its parikrama or chief temples, and the afternoon and evening to Barsana, ending with the Kirti Mandir light show. Where they sit in Braj

It helps to picture where these two lie on the map of Braj. Both stand in the western part of the region, away from the twin towns of Mathura and Vrindavan which lie to the east on the Yamuna. Govardhan is about twenty two kilometres west of Mathura, and Barsana about twenty kilometres further north west of Govardhan, with Nandgaon, the village of Nanda Baba, only eight to nine kilometres beyond Barsana. So these western towns, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon, form a natural cluster, best seen together by road on a day out from Mathura or Vrindavan. A day taking in both

Here is how a good day is in both towns. Begin early from Mathura or Vrindavan and drive to Govardhan, about forty five minutes, for the cool of the morning is the best time for the parikrama or for darshan at the Daan Ghati and the Mukharvind. From Govardhan, drive the twenty kilometres to Barsana, about forty minutes, arriving by the afternoon. Climb to the Radha Rani temple on its hill, then come down for the Kirti Mandir, timing it for the evening light and sound show. Nandgaon can be added, only a few kilometres on, if the day allows. When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the best for this day out, pleasant for the drive and for the walking and climbing at both towns, especially the Govardhan parikrama and the climb to the Radha Rani temple. The great days are Radha Ashtami, Radha’s birthday, when Barsana is at its most joyful, the world famous Lathmar Holi of Barsana in spring, and Govardhan Puja after Diwali; these are magnificent but very crowded. The honest bit

Honest words for this stretch of Braj. The distance is small, about twenty kilometres, so do not let any driver tell you it is far or charge a large fare; agree the price first. Darshan at both Govardhan and Barsana is free, and no official VIP pass exists at either or anywhere in Braj, whatever a tout may promise. Remember that Govardhan asks a long parikrama on foot and Barsana a climb to the Radha Rani temple, so both involve real walking; wear easy footwear, carry water and pace the day, and the elderly may take the shorter options. And the hill of Govardhan is circled, never climbed, as every Brajwasi holds dear.
