What is Kaliya Ghat?

Kaliya Ghat, also called Kaliya Dah or the Kaliya Daman ghat, is an ancient ghat on the bank of the Yamuna in Vrindavan, on the Parikrama Marg near the famous Keshi Ghat. It is revered as the very place where the child Krishna performed one of his most famous feats, the Kaliya Mardana lila, subduing the great venomous serpent Kaliya who had poisoned the river. Two things make it a place of pilgrimage rather than an ordinary ghat: the Kadamba tree from which Krishna is said to have leapt into the river still stands here, living and a short way off is the ancient temple of Kaliya Mardana Krishna. The story of Kaliya Ghat: the Kaliya Mardana lila

The tale is among the most beloved of Krishna’s boyhood. The serpent Kaliya, a great and venomous naga, had taken refuge in a deep pool of the Yamuna at Vrindavan, for he was fleeing Garuda, the eagle mount of Vishnu and the mortal enemy of snakes and this one spot on the river was the one place Garuda could not come, on account of an old sage’s curse. But Kaliya’s poison fouled the water, killing the birds that flew over it and poisoning the river on which the people and cattle of Vrindavan depended. When Krishna, still a boy, learned of it, he climbed a Kadamba tree on the bank and leapt into the poisoned pool with a sound like a falling meteor.

Kaliya rose in fury and coiled about the boy, but Krishna expanded himself and rose up and then, springing onto the many hoods of the serpent, he began to dance. With every step upon the hoods, the serpent’s venom and his pride were trodden down together, until Kaliya, broken and humbled, at last surrendered. The wives of Kaliya, the naga patnis, prayed to Krishna for their lord’s life and Krishna, ever merciful, spared him, commanding him only to leave the Yamuna and return to the ocean. And he gave Kaliya a gift: the mark of his own lotus feet, imprinted on the serpent’s hoods, so that Garuda, seeing them, would never again trouble him. Thus the ghat is not only a tale of Krishna’s power over evil but, as the Brajwasis love to say, of his mercy, for he did not kill the serpent but freed and blessed him.

The living Kadamba tree

The wonder of Kaliya Ghat and what draws pilgrims to it, is the Kadamba tree that still stands at the ghat, revered as the very tree from which Krishna leapt into the river five thousand years ago. The tradition holds that when all other life on the poisoned bank had died, this one tree lived and it lives still, hollow now with age yet growing. Devotees tell that a drop of the nectar of immortality once fell upon it or that the touch of Krishna’s leap gave it undying life. Whatever one believes, to stand before this ancient living tree, tied to so beloved a story, is a moving thing and the ghat and its tree are always open, so darshan of it may be had at any hour.

The Kaliya Mardana temple

About a hundred metres from the ghat stands the temple of Kaliya Mardana Krishna, which tradition holds was built by Vajranabha, the great grandson of Krishna himself, who is said to have established many of the earliest shrines of Braj in remembrance of his ancestor’s lilas. Within it is worshipped a deity of Krishna dancing upon the serpent, the Kaliya Mardana form, a beautiful and unusual image showing the very moment of the story. The meaning of the lila

Beyond the story, the Brajwasis and the saints read a deeper meaning in the Kaliya lila and it is worth carrying with you to the ghat. The poison of Kaliya is taken as the poison of the ego and pride that fouls the pure waters of the heart and Krishna’s dance upon the hoods as the treading down of that pride, not to destroy the soul but to purify it. That Krishna spared and blessed the humbled serpent is the heart of it: the Lord subdues the ego only to free the self beneath it. Pilgrims come to Kaliya Ghat, then, not only to remember a childhood feat but to ask that their own pride be trodden down and their own hearts made pure, which is why the place is loved.

Location and how to reach Kaliya Ghat

Kaliya Ghat lies in Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, pin code 281121, on the Parikrama Marg near Keshi Ghat, so it sits naturally on the route of the Vrindavan parikrama and is most easily seen as part of that walk. The ghat is now a little back from the present course of the Yamuna, which has shifted over the centuries, though in the rains the river still comes up to touch it. Within Vrindavan it is reached on foot through the old lanes or by e-rickshaw or auto to the nearest point on the parikrama marg and then a short walk, for no car reaches the ghat itself. Vrindavan lies about twelve to fifteen kilometres from Mathura and about a hundred and eighty from Delhi. The table gives the distances.

When to visit

The pleasant seasons of October to November and February to April are the best times to visit Kaliya Ghat, when the weather is mild and neither the summer heat nor the depth of winter troubles the riverside walk. During the day, the early morning is quiet and lovely along the parikrama marg and the temple’s morning darshan is open then; the evening brings the temple’s second darshan and the peace of the river at dusk.
