📌 QUICK ANSWER
Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul and Barsana sit close together in Braj, but they are not a casual one day loop. The smart route follows the geography: Mathura and Gokul on one side of the Yamuna, then Vrindavan, then Govardhan and Barsana to the west. Mathura to Vrindavan is about 12 to 15 km, Mathura to Gokul about 10 to 15 km, Mathura to Govardhan about 22 km and Mathura to Barsana about 45 km. The map is the easy part. Timing your darshan around the temple windows is what makes or breaks the day.
Key takeaways
They look closer than they travel. Short kilometres, but temple traffic, narrow lanes and darshan queues stretch the day.
Follow the geography, not a random order. A good sequence is Mathura and Gokul together, then Vrindavan, then Govardhan and Barsana.
Distances at a glance: Mathura to Vrindavan about 12 to 15 km, to Gokul about 10 to 15 km, to Govardhan about 22 km, to Barsana about 45 km.
Give Vrindavan more time than you plan. People always stay longer than expected.
One day covers Mathura and Vrindavan; two to three days adds Gokul, Govardhan and Barsana without rushing.
Many people open a map before visiting Braj and see four dots close together and assume one easy day covers them all. Then the trip begins and they learn the truth: these towns look near on a screen, but each carries a different rhythm, crowd and feeling. A real Braj map is not only roads and kilometres, it is about how you move between sacred towns tied to the life of Krishna and Radha. Plan it with the geography and the temple windows in mind and the journey flows. Rush it and it tires you out fast. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and I plan and drive these routes every week. Here is the map, the full distance matrix and the order I actually use. To have the whole route arranged, message WhatsApp +91 7302265809 or see our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.
The map: how Braj is laid out
Think of Braj in three clusters around Mathura, which is the hub and the main railhead.
East, across the Yamuna: Gokul and Mahavan, the land of Krishna's infancy.
North: Vrindavan, the devotional heart, only a short hop from Mathura.
West: Govardhan with Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar and beyond it Barsana and Nandgaon, the villages of Radha and Krishna.
Distance matrix: every leg
These are indicative road distances from the Braj Master Manual and our own route guides. Confirm them for your day, since traffic and roadworks change.

The right route order
Do not move randomly between the towns or you will cross the district twice and lose hours. Follow the geography.
A clean two day order: Day one, Mathura and Gokul, which sit on the same side of the river, then Vrindavan in the evening. Day two, Govardhan with Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar, then Barsana and Nandgaon.
If you have one day: Mathura's core and Vrindavan's main temples only. Leave Gokul, Govardhan and Barsana for a return trip.
Where to start: most people begin at Mathura, because the rail connection is strongest there, then fan out.
Your exact order depends on your hotel and the temple timings. For a full plan, see how to plan a Mathura Vrindavan trip or let us sequence it for you.
Town by town and what to see
Mathura. Krishna's birthplace and the busiest, most commercial of the towns, so do its temples early. See Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat.
Gokul and Mahavan. Across the Yamuna, the gentle land of Krishna's infancy. See Nand Bhavan, Raman Reti, Chaurasi Khamba and Brahmand Ghat. This is my own home ground.
Vrindavan. The devotional heart, where the lanes are narrow and the bells never stop. See Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and Keshi Ghat. Give it more time than you think.
Govardhan. The sacred hill you circle, never climb, on the roughly 21 km parikrama, with Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar and Mansi Ganga along the way.
Barsana and Nandgaon. Radha's village on its four hills, crowned by the Ladli Lal temple and facing it Nandgaon, Krishna's boyhood village. Barsana is the home of Lathmar Holi.

How long do you need
One day: Mathura core plus Vrindavan's main temples.
Two days: add Govardhan with Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar.
Three days: add Barsana, Nandgaon and an unhurried Gokul.
See how many days you need for the details.
Timing: the part most people get wrong
The map will not save a badly timed day. Most major temples in Mathura and Vrindavan close for a few hours in the middle of the day and reopen in the evening, so plan travel and lunch into that midday gap and keep darshan to the morning and evening windows. Always confirm the exact times on the day, since they shift with the season, with Ekadashi and with festivals. For the season picture, see the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan.
Honest ground truths
A few things a real Brajwasi will tell you that most map posts skip.
Darshan is free. There is no official VIP or special darshan pass at Banke Bihari and no daily Mangala Aarti there, only on rare festival days. Anyone selling a paid pass or a daily Mangala Aarti slot is a tout.
You circle Govardhan, you never climb it. The hill is worshipped as Krishna himself and a vehicle parikrama exists for the elderly.
Radha Kund has touts. Some will steer you to a lesser tank for a fee. Go with someone who knows the genuine one.
Radha's birthplace is held by both Barsana and Raval. I show both and do not adjudicate.
Agree fares before you ride and keep real donations to the temple hundi.
