Key takeaways
Distance: about 23.5 to 31.2 km, with the fastest route via Radha Kund Road at about 23.5 km.
Time: about 40 to 50 minutes by road, longer on weekends and festivals.
The real reason to go: the Govardhan Parikrama, about 21 km, with a roughly 7 km short option and a vehicle parikrama for the elderly or unwell.
You circle Govardhan, you never climb it. The hill is worshipped as Krishna himself.
Start early, take a break before the parikrama, and confirm timings on the day.
When pilgrims finish their Vrindavan darshan, someone always says, now you must go to Govardhan. And the question forms: how far is it, and how do I do it without wearing myself out? The honest answer is that the distance is the easy part. Govardhan is not really a place you reach, it is a hill you walk around, and how you time and pace that walk decides everything. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, and I run this circuit constantly. Let me give you the practical detail and the local truths the map will not. The distance, and why it matters less than you think
On a map the distance looks short, around 23.5 km by the quickest route, stretching to about 31.2 km on the wider road. But the kilometres are not the point. The moment you arrive, the pace changes. People walk barefoot, the noise falls away, and the trip stops being about travel and becomes about devotion. The defining story is here: Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his finger to shelter the people of Braj from Indra's storm, and ever since, the hill itself is worshipped as Giriraj ji, as Krishna in the form of a mountain.
The routes: which one works
There is more than one way to reach Govardhan, and the choice makes a real difference.
Route | Distance | Time | Notes |
Route 1, via Radha Kund Road | about 23.5 km | about 43 min | Fastest, lighter traffic |
Route 2, via Mathura Govardhan Road | about 31.2 km | about 45 min | Wider roads, slightly longer |
Route 3, mixed route | about 27.4 km | about 49 min | Balanced option |
For the quickest journey, Route 1 via Radha Kund Road is best. If you prefer wider, smoother roads, Route 2 feels more comfortable.
Travel time: what actually affects it
The drive is around 40 to 50 minutes, but a few real factors stretch it: morning traffic near the Vrindavan temples, weekend crowds, festival days like Guru Purnima or the month of Kartik, and stops at Radha Kund or Kusum Sarovar along the way. An early start almost always feels smoother and calmer.
The Govardhan Parikrama: the real journey
Most pilgrims do not come simply to see Govardhan, they come to walk around it. This is the heart of the visit, and a few honest truths matter here.
Detail | Information |
Full parikrama | about 21 km |
Time on foot | about 5 to 7 hours |
Short parikrama | about 7 km |
Usual starting point | Daan Ghati |
You circle Govardhan, you never climb it. The hill is believed to be slowly shrinking, and out of reverence pilgrims never set foot on it. The full circuit is about 21 km, walked barefoot by the devout, and it asks for real stamina, so take a proper break before you begin rather than rushing straight from Vrindavan. If knees, heart or heat are a concern, there is a shorter route and a vehicle parikrama, where you circle the hill by car and still take darshan of the shrines along the way. The hill does not count blisters. What matters is the reverence you bring.
How to reach Govardhan from Vrindavan
By car or taxi. The most convenient and flexible option, about 40 to 50 minutes, best via Radha Kund Road. A tempo traveller suits larger groups.
By auto or shared vehicle. Available and cheaper, though slower and less comfortable over the full distance.
By train. The nearest hub is Mathura Junction, then onward by road to Govardhan.
By air. The nearest major airport is Delhi, about 150 km away, then road to Braj. Agra has a smaller airport nearer by.
For the wider arrival picture, see Delhi to Mathura Vrindavan, or book our taxi service and let a local driver handle the route and the parikrama timing.
Cost, mode by mode
These are indicative ranges, so confirm the current fare before you set off. Darshan and the parikrama are free.
Mode | Indicative cost |
Taxi or cab (one way or round trip) | ₹800 to ₹1500 |
Auto or shared vehicle | cheaper, agree the fare first |
Private car | fuel and your driver's day rate |
An honest word from a Brajwasi: agree fares before you ride, and be firm with anyone selling a "special darshan" charge or rushing you to a lesser tank at Radha Kund for a fee. Darshan is free, and those are tout tactics. For the full budget picture, see Mathura Vrindavan trip cost.
What to see in Govardhan
Space these out rather than rushing all of them.
Daan Ghati. The usual starting point of the parikrama, the spot of the daan leela where Krishna playfully taxed the gopis' milk pots.
Radha Kund and Shyam Kund. The most sacred tanks here, and for the Gaudiya tradition the holiest spot in all creation. Go with someone who knows the genuine pair, since touts will steer you to a lesser one for a fee.
Kusum Sarovar. A breathtaking stepped sandstone tank with Jat era chhatris, where Radha gathered flowers. To my eye it gives the finest sunset in Braj.
Mansi Ganga. The central tank of Govardhan town, which Krishna is said to have created from his mind. Floating lamps here on a Kartik evening is luminous.
One more local caution: a Giriraj shila, a stone of the hill, is taken only with specific ritual and is never trodden upon. Ask a knowledgeable local before doing anything with the hill's stone.

Best time to travel
Travel early morning for the calmest journey and the coolest start to the parikrama, or late afternoon for an evening circuit. Avoid the midday heat, especially in summer. The month of Kartik and Guru Purnima bring large crowds, though that is also when the energy is strongest. For the month-by-month picture, see the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan, and for the festival itself, our Govardhan Puja and Annakut guide.
