📌 QUICK ANSWER

Mumbai to Vrindavan is about 1,297 kilometres by road and takes roughly 23 hours of driving, which is why almost nobody drives it. Most pilgrims fly to Delhi in about two hours and drive the remaining 150 kilometres to Vrindavan in around three, reaching Braj the same day. The other good option is a direct train to Mathura Junction, about 12 kilometres from Vrindavan, which takes most of a day and night. To plan the journey from Mumbai, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Key takeaways

  • Mumbai to Vrindavan is about 1,297 to 1,694 km by road.

  • Driving takes roughly 23 hours, so very few people do it.

  • Flying to Delhi takes about two hours, then three hours by road.

  • Direct trains run to Mathura Junction, about 12 km from Vrindavan.

  • Flying gets you from Mumbai to Braj comfortably in a single day.

  • A package handles the flight or train, the transfer, stay and darshan.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them, and a great many from Mumbai. The honest answer to this question is not the one the map gives. Yes, Vrindavan is about thirteen hundred kilometres from Mumbai and the road distance is real, but almost nobody makes that drive, and I would not advise it. What Mumbai pilgrims actually need to know is how to turn that distance into a comfortable journey, and there are two good ways. Here they are, set out plainly. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages and book with one message us on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Mumbai to Vrindavan by road: the routes

If you do intend to drive, or you want the distance for its own sake, here are the three routes. All are long.

Mumbai to Vrindavan road routes. Times assume continuous driving; plan overnight halts.

Via NE 4 and NH 21

A close alternative

Via the Samruddhi Mahamarg and NH 44

1,694 km

Much longer; only for a staged road trip

Read those numbers honestly. Twenty three hours is continuous driving time with no meals, no rest and no traffic beyond the average, which no one manages in one go. A realistic road trip means two days each way with an overnight halt, usually around Indore or Gwalior. That is four days of your holiday spent in a car. Unless the drive itself is the point, and for a few groups it genuinely is, there are better ways.

Comparing all three ways

This table is the real answer to the question, and it is what I give every Mumbai family that writes to me.

Ways to travel from Mumbai to Vrindavan. Flying is the practical choice for most pilgrims.

By air: the sensible choice

For most people this is the answer. Mumbai to Delhi is a very well served route with flights through the day, taking about two hours. From Delhi, Vrindavan is about 150 kilometres, roughly three hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway, which is a smooth and easy drive. Leave Mumbai in the morning and you can be at the evening aarti in Vrindavan the same day. Some flights also serve Agra, from where Vrindavan is only about an hour and a half. We meet you at the airport and drive you straight to Braj; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service handles the transfer, and our Delhi to Mathura Vrindavan travel guide covers that leg in detail.

By train: the traditional way

The railway is how Mumbai has always reached Braj, and many families still prefer it. Mathura Junction sits on the main Mumbai to Delhi line, so a good number of trains from Mumbai Central and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus stop there directly, taking most of a day and a night depending on the service. Mathura Junction is only about 12 kilometres from Vrindavan, a short cab or auto ride at the other end. It is comfortable in a booked class, considerably cheaper than flying for a family, and there is a real pleasure in watching the country change through the window as you go north. Book well ahead, particularly around festivals, because these trains fill early.

Should you drive?

Only if the road trip is something you want for its own sake. A group of friends with time, taking two days each way with a night at Indore or Gwalior, can make a fine journey of it and see a good deal of India on the way. For a family with a week off, or for elderly parents, it is the wrong choice: four days of driving out of a seven day trip, and everyone arrives tired. If you do drive, note that the fastest route carries tolls, and plan your halts before you set out rather than hunting for a hotel at midnight.

Packages from Mumbai

The simplest way to do the whole thing is a package built for the journey from Mumbai, coordinating your travel, the transfer at the other end, the hotel and the darshan into one arrangement, so that the distance stops being your problem. Our 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour from Mumbai is the one most Mumbai families take: three days is enough for Mathura, Vrindavan and the wider Braj without rushing. See all durations on our tour packages page, and stay on our Mathura Vrindavan hotels page.

How many days to allow

Because the travelling is substantial, do not plan a flying visit. Two full days on the ground is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile, and three is better: one for Vrindavan’s temples, one for Mathura and Gokul, and a third for Govardhan and Barsana or simply for an unhurried pace. Add travel days at each end and you are looking at four to five days from Mumbai in total. Our plan your perfect Vrindavan Mathura trip guide sets out how the days fit together.

When to make the journey

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable, and a welcome change from the Mumbai humidity. Kartik in autumn is the most devotional season. Holi, Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami are magnificent but immensely crowded, and flights, trains and hotels all price up and fill months in advance, so decide early if you want a festival. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide has the seasons, and our festivals of Braj page the calendar.

The honest bit

An honest word for a long journey. When you arrive, every temple darshan in Braj is free, and there is no official VIP darshan pass at Banke Bihari or anywhere else; travellers who have come a long way are exactly who the touts approach, so know this before you land. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's nightly raas is a cherished belief rather than a documented fact. The Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. Package prices move with airfares and season, so take the day's quote rather than an old figure. And the road distance, as above, is real but not advisable.

Our VIP darshan in Vrindavan guide explains the fake-pass trade in full, and is worth reading before you travel.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, in the heart of Braj, and I have welcomed Mumbai families here since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims in all, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. For a journey this long, what you want is one person responsible for the whole chain, the arrival, the transfer, the hotel, the darshan timings and the drive home, rather than five bookings that do not talk to each other. We meet you at Delhi or Agra airport or at Mathura Junction, and from that moment the distance is our problem and not yours. Our car is clean, our fare one clear number, our guiding our own home ground.

Tip from Gurudutt: take the earliest flight you can and come straight to Vrindavan rather than staying a night in Delhi. You will reach in time for the evening aarti on the Yamuna, sleep in Braj, and be at Banke Bihari for the morning opening the next day. That single decision gains you the best half day of the whole trip.

Delhi to Vrindavan is about 150 to 165 km by road, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by cab on the Yamuna Expressway. Vrindavan, Barsana and Mathura: The Complete Braj Triangle Guide

Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana form the sacred triangle of Braj. Mathura is Krishna's birthplace, Vrindavan the town of his childhood leelas about 14 km away and Barsana the hilltop village of Radha, some 42 to 45 km from both. To see all three properly you need two to three days: Vrindavan and Mathura in the first two and Barsana with Nandgaon on the third. A car is essential to move between them. Where to Visit First, Mathura or Vrindavan? A Braj Guide's Honest Answer

There is no wrong order, but the two best answers are these. To follow Krishna's life story, visit Mathura first, his birthplace and then Vrindavan, where he spent his childhood. For the smoothest single day around the temple timings and crowds, visit Vrindavan first in the cool morning for an early Banke Bihari darshan, then Mathura in the evening for the Yamuna aarti. If you arrive by train, you will land at Mathura Junction, so starting there is natural. To plan the perfect order with a car and guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
