📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Yamalarjun (Yamala-Arjuna or twin Arjuna trees) in Gokul were two massive Arjuna trees in the courtyard of Nanda Baba, associated with Krishna's childhood Damodara Leela or Ukhal Bandhan Leela. By the Srimad Bhagavatam, the trees were Nalakuvara and Manigriva, sons of Kubera, cursed by Narada Muni for their pride to stand as trees until freed by Krishna. When Mother Yashoda tied the toddler Krishna to a wooden grinding mortar (ukhal), he crawled between the twin trees, the mortar caught crosswise and he pulled the great trees down, releasing the two princes. The site is preserved as the Ukhal Bandhan Ashram at Mahavan (Old Gokul), about 15 km southeast of Mathura. To visit it with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
I was born in Gokul and the story of the twin trees is one every Gokul child grows up on. In the courtyard of Nanda Baba stood two great Arjuna trees, the Yamalarjun and they were not trees at all but two cursed celestial princes waiting for the Lord. The day a crawling, butter-thieving toddler named Krishna dragged a wooden mortar between them and brought them crashing down, he freed them and gave the world one of its most beloved pastimes: the Damodara Leela. The very spot is preserved in old Gokul to this day. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. The Ukhal Bandhan site is part of the old heart of my own Gokul and it is one I love to bring people to, because the Damodara Leela is among the sweetest of all the Krishna stories. In this guide I will tell you who the twin trees really were, the curse of Narada and its merciful deliverance, the whole Damodara Leela of the mortar and the trees, what it means and exactly where the site is and how to reach it. Everything here is from the Srimad Bhagavatam and the living tradition of my land.
Who Were the Yamalarjun Trees? The Curse of Narada
The twin trees were no ordinary plants. By the Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 10, Chapter 10, in a previous celestial age they were Nalakuvara and Manigriva, the two sons of the wealthy demigod Kubera, the treasurer of the heavens. Arrogant with wealth and heavily intoxicated, the brothers were one day bathing without clothes with young women in the Mandakini river. When the divine sage Narada Muni passed by, the women covered themselves in modesty, but the proud, drunken brothers remained naked, too full of themselves to care.
To teach them humility, Narada cursed them to stand as immobile, naked trees on the earth for a thousand celestial years. Yet he was merciful, for a saint's curse is also a hidden blessing: he prophesied that they would be liberated by the touch of Lord Vishnu himself, in his Krishna avatar. And so the two brothers manifested as a pair of massive Arjuna trees (Terminalia arjuna) in the very courtyard of Nanda Baba and Mother Yashoda in Gokul, standing, waiting, for the child who would set them free.
The Damodara Leela (Ukhal Bandhan Leela)
The pastime that freed them is one of the most cherished in all of Braj. One day, exasperated by the toddler Krishna's endless butter-stealing, Mother Yashoda tied him by the waist to a heavy wooden grinding mortar, an ukhal, to keep him in one place. This is why Krishna earned the name Damodara, from dama (rope) and udara (belly), the Lord bound by the belly and why the whole pastime is called the Ukhal Bandhan, the binding to the mortar.
But the little Lord had not forgotten the words of his devotee Narada. Dragging the heavy mortar behind him, Krishna deliberately crawled into the narrow gap between the two tightly spaced Arjuna trees. The mortar caught crosswise between the trunks and with one gentle pull from the child, the two gigantic trees were torn up by the roots and came crashing down with a sound like a thunderbolt. This same world of Krishna's butter-thieving infancy is remembered all along the Gokul riverside, at sites like Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda saw the universe in his mouth.
The Deliverance of Nalakuvara and Manigriva
From the shattered trunks of the fallen trees, the two radiant celestial princes emerged, freed at last from Narada's curse. Restored to their divine forms, Nalakuvara and Manigriva bowed low before the toddler who had liberated them, offered heartfelt prayers of devotion and then returned to their heavenly abode, humbled and transformed. The pastime teaches, as clearly as any in the scriptures, that divine grace can turn a curse into a blessing and that the Lord breaks the bondage of material pride as easily as a child pulls down a tree. The pride that had turned them to wood was undone by the touch of pure, innocent love.
The Ukhal Bandhan Ashram: What to See Today
The exact spot where this pastime occurred is preserved and worshipped as a major pilgrimage site, the Ukhal Bandhan Ashram, also called the Yamalarjuna-bhanjana-tirtha, within the Nanda Bhawan compound of Mahavan, the Old Gokul. It sits in the same ancient heart of the village as the famous 84-pillar hall of Nanda Baba's palace, the Chaurasi Khamba, Mahavan.
The ancient ukhal: inside the temple you can see the old wooden grinding mortar, the very kind Krishna was tied to, preserved for pilgrims.
The twin-tree site: remnants or symbolic representations mark where the two Arjuna trees stood and fell.
The Nanda Bhawan compound: the old palace heart of Mahavan, steeped in the pastimes of Krishna's infancy.
It is a humble, deeply atmospheric old site rather than a grand complex and to have a puja offered here in your family's name, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
The Damodara Leela and the Month of Kartik
The Damodara Leela is not only a story but a season of worship. The whole holy month of Kartik (October to November) is dedicated to Krishna as Damodara, the Lord bound by love to his mother's rope and across Braj devotees sing the famous Damodarashtaka and offer lamps to him through the month. To visit the Yamalarjun site in Kartik is especially sweet. You will find the dates and the wider calendar in our guide to the Braj festivals.
Location and How to Reach Yamalarjun (Ukhal Bandhan Ashram)
The site lies in Mahavan, the Old Gokul, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, about 15 km southeast of Mathura city. Its address is the Ukhal Bandhan Ashram, Nanda Bhawan compound, Mahavan, Mathura district, pincode 281305. It sits peacefully near the river, in the rustic heart of Krishna's infancy.
From Mathura: about 15 km southeast; roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road.
From Gokul town: a very short hop, within the Mahavan and Gokul area.
From Vrindavan: about 25 to 27 km; allow around an hour by car.
On foot: it sits within the old Mahavan compound beside Chaurasi Khamba; the two are easily seen together.
Mahavan and Gokul are rustic, old Braj with narrow lanes, so the easy way is to drive to Gokul and walk the compound. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Gokul and Mahavan sites well.
Combine Your Visit: A Gokul and Mahavan Day
The Yamalarjun site is best seen as part of a Gokul and Mahavan day, the Braj of Krishna's babyhood. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |
1 | Chaurasi Khamba & Ukhal Bandhan, Mahavan | Nanda Baba's palace and the twin-tree site, together |
2 | The nearby forest shrine of the Lohasura pastime
3 | The great temple of Balarama, Krishna's elder brother
4 | The birthplace of Krishna, back toward Mathura
5 | End at the Yamuna in Mathura for the evening aarti |
A representative day of Krishna's infancy; the Gokul and Mahavan sites are humble and best seen with a guide.
Best Time to Visit the Yamalarjun Site
The site is open to pilgrims through the day, but Gokul is lovely in the cool months and most meaningful at the festivals of Krishna's childhood.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for the Gokul and Mahavan lanes.
Kartik / Damodar month (Oct to Nov): the month of Krishna as Damodara, especially apt at the Ukhal Bandhan site.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav (Aug to Sep): the whole of Gokul celebrates Krishna's birth and infancy.
Mornings: the calmest time in the old village lanes.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
See it with Chaurasi Khamba; the twin-tree site and Nanda's palace sit in the same old Mahavan compound.
Look for the ancient ukhal; ask the priest to show you the old grinding mortar inside the temple.
Take a local guide; the Gokul and Mahavan sites are humble and unsignposted and the Damodara story is the reason to come.
Visit in Kartik if you can; the Damodar month gives the site its deepest meaning.
Come in the morning for the quietest atmosphere in the old lanes.
Dress modestly and tread gently at this ancient, sacred spot.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: the Ukhal Bandhan Ashram is a humble, old shrine in the rustic lanes of Mahavan, not a grand temple with facilities. Its power is entirely in the Damodara story and in standing where it is said to have happened, so go knowing the leela and the simple site becomes deeply moving. Gokul and Mahavan are the quiet, rural Braj of Krishna's babyhood, with narrow unsignposted lanes, quite unlike the bustle of Vrindavan and some visitors expecting a big temple are surprised. A local who can walk you to the site, show you the old ukhal and tell the story makes all the difference. If you would like a comfortable base from which to explore Gokul and Mahavan unhurried, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. The old sites of Gokul and Mahavan are my own home ground and they are exactly where a local guide brings the stories to life: we know the Ukhal Bandhan compound, the old ukhal and the twin-tree spot, the Damodara story to tell there and the right order to see the sites of Krishna's infancy. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Stand at the Ukhal Bandhan site and picture it as we tell it in Gokul: a little boy tied to a heavy mortar, crawling with all his might between two great trees and the thunder as they fall and then two shining princes rising from the wreckage to bow at his tiny feet. The proud were turned to wood; the humble, loving child set them free. In Kartik, light a small lamp to Damodara here and sing even one line of the Damodarashtaka. For one born in this village, there is no sweeter place in all of Braj. |
