Pipleshwar Mahadev and Vishram Ghat

Pipleshwar Mahadev stands close by the Vishram Ghat, the chief and holiest of the ghats of Mathura, where Krishna is said to have rested after slaying the tyrant Kansa, and where the beautiful evening aarti of the Yamuna is held each day. Worship at Pipleshwar Mahadev

As at every temple of Shiva, the worship at Pipleshwar Mahadev centres on the Shivling, the sacred form of Mahadev, upon which the devotees pour water and milk and offer the bilva, the leaves of the bel tree dear to Shiva, along with flowers, and before which they light lamps and offer their prayers. Monday, the day sacred to Shiva, sees the most worshippers, and the great night of Mahashivratri, when the whole of Braj honours Mahadev, is celebrated here with special devotion and long queues for the darshan. The month of Shravan, the holy monsoon month of Shiva, is another time of special worship. Location and how to reach Pipleshwar Mahadev

Pipleshwar Mahadev stands near Vishram Ghat, in the eastern part of the old city of Mathura, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna in the heart of the ancient temple quarter. It is about four to five kilometres from Mathura Junction, the nearest railway station, well connected across the country, about an hour from Agra and three to four hours from Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway; the nearest airport is Agra, about sixty kilometres, or Delhi, about a hundred and fifty. The temple lies in the old riverside lanes near Vishram Ghat, best reached on foot or by cycle rickshaw or e rickshaw through the narrow ways, and is easily combined with the Vishram Ghat and the other old city temples. The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit, and within the day the morning and the evening are the loveliest times, the evening especially, when the darshan of Pipleshwar Mahadev may be joined to the aarti at the nearby Vishram Ghat. The most special days at the temple are the Mondays, sacred to Shiva; the great night of Mahashivratri, in the late winter; and the holy monsoon month of Shravan, when Shiva is worshipped throughout.
