Yes, one day is enough for the essential Agra, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with time to add the Baby Taj and a Mehtab Bagh sunset if you begin early. What one day does not give you is the deeper Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra and the quieter tombs, which need a second day. The single thing that decides your day is the start: leave your hotel by half past five or six in the morning for the Taj at sunrise and everything flows; start late and you lose the morning to queues and the day to heat. 1. Taj Mahal

You begin, of course, with the Taj Mahal and you begin at sunrise. Built by Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz Mahal, it is the marble monument to love that needs no introduction and seen in the soft light of dawn, before the crowds and the heat, with the marble turning from grey to pink to white, it is unforgettable in a way the midday Taj never is. Plan two to two and a half hours. Reach the gates before they open, carry only the essentials, for security is tight and bags are restricted and remember two things without fail: the Taj is closed every Friday and its entry ticket is bought separately from the government, never included in any genuine tour price. 2. Agra Fort

From the Taj it is only about fifteen minutes to Agra Fort and the two belong together, for it was from this red sandstone fortress that Shah Jahan, imprisoned by his own son in his last years, gazed down the river at the tomb of his beloved. A vast walled city of palaces, halls and courtyards, it tells the story of Mughal power as the Taj tells the story of Mughal love and an hour and a half here in the late morning is well spent. It is the natural second stop of the day, close, grand and full of history and together with the Taj it gives you the complete Mughal picture, the seat of the empire and its greatest monument.

3. Lunch and the midday

By early afternoon the sun is high and it is time to rest and eat. Agra is famous for its Mughlai food and its petha, the translucent ash gourd sweet found nowhere else in such variety, worth carrying home. Take a proper lunch and a pause in the heat of the day, as the locals do, rather than pushing through it and you will have the energy for the afternoon and the sunset. This midday break is not lost time; it is what makes a full one day itinerary work without exhaustion.

4. Itmad ud Daulah, the Baby Taj

In the early afternoon, when its marble inlay catches the sun, visit Itmad ud Daulah, the tomb affectionately called the Baby Taj. Built by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, it was the first Mughal structure built entirely of white marble and it is said to have inspired the Taj itself. Far less crowded than the great monument, intimate and jewel-like with its delicate lattice work and Persian arches, it is a favourite of those who love to linger and photograph in peace. 5. Mehtab Bagh at sunset

End your day at Mehtab Bagh, the riverside garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal. As the sun sets, the marble of the Taj changes colour, from white to amber to soft grey and reflected in the river with no crowds around you, it is a completely different and quieter experience from the morning visit and for many the loveliest moment of the day. Three quarters of an hour here as the light fades is the perfect close to a one day Agra itinerary, the same wonder seen twice, at dawn and at dusk, from two banks of the same river.

If you are a lover of history and would rather trade the gentler afternoon sights for something grander, swap in Fatehpur Sikri, the perfectly preserved red sandstone city that Akbar built as his capital and then abandoned, about forty kilometres from Agra. It is atmospheric and magnificent, with the towering Buland Darwaza, the Jama Masjid and the tomb of Salim Chishti, but it is a commitment of an hour’s drive each way and two to three hours there, so it fills the afternoon and rules out the Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh. A suggested one day plan

Here is how the day flows when it is done well, though the exact hours flex with the season and the crowds.

• Sunrise. The Taj Mahal as the gates open, two to two and a half hours in the cool morning light.

• Late morning. Agra Fort, fifteen minutes away, an hour and a half among the palaces and halls.

• Midday. Lunch, Mughlai food and petha and a rest through the heat of the day.

• Early afternoon. Itmad ud Daulah, the Baby Taj, three quarters of an hour in its quiet.

• Sunset. Mehtab Bagh across the river for the Taj changing colour as the day closes.

How to reach Agra

Agra is one of the best connected cities in north India. It sits on the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi, about two hundred and thirty kilometres and three to three and a half hours away and fast trains, including the Gatimaan and Shatabdi, reach Agra Cantt in well under two hours from Delhi. Agra has its own small airport with limited flights, but most fly into Delhi. When to visit Agra

The best time to visit Agra is the cool season from October to March, when the days are pleasant for walking the monuments and the light is soft and clear.
