How far is Prem Mandir from the ISKCON temple?

The distance from Prem Mandir to the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan is only about one point one kilometer by the shortest road, which means a drive of just five to six minutes or a gentle walk of about fifteen minutes. Both temples stand on the newer, western side of Vrindavan, towards Chhatikara and the highway, where there is room for their great grounds, and they are joined by the Sri Premanand Road, so getting from one to the other could hardly be simpler. Walking between the two temples

Because the two temples are so close, many pilgrims simply walk between them, and it is a pleasant enough walk of about one point two kilometres, some fifteen to sixteen minutes, along the Sri Premanand Road. One thing to know, which the map will tell you: some of the very shortest connecting lanes are narrow, and parts may have restricted or private access, so on foot it is best to keep to the main Sri Premanand Road rather than seeking a shortcut through the back lanes. In the cool of the morning or evening the walk is a fine one, past the life of Vrindavan; in the heat of the midday, the short e-rickshaw ride is kinder. The table gives the walking route.

And from ISKCON back to Prem Mandir

The journey the other way, from the ISKCON temple to Prem Mandir, is naturally the same short distance of about one to one point one kilometres, a five minute drive or the same fifteen minute walk, by the Sri Premanand Road or the ISKCON Temple Gali joining it. So whichever of the two you see first, the other is only minutes away, and you may take them in either order to suit your day and the darshan and aarti timings of each. How to get from one to the other

For so short a distance, your choices are simple. An e-rickshaw or a cycle rickshaw is the easiest and cheapest way, found waiting outside both temples, and it costs only a little for the few minutes’ ride; agree to the small fare before you set off, as is the custom. An auto rickshaw does the same. If you have your own car or a hired taxi for the day, it is a five minute hop, though at busy times the parking and the crowds around each temple take longer than the drive itself. And on a pleasant morning or evening, as I have said, the walk is short and agreeable. There is no need for any long planning; the two are neighbours.

Seeing both temples together

Since they are so close, Prem Mandir and ISKCON are nearly always seen on the same Vrindavan visit, and it is worth knowing what each offers so you can plan your time. The ISKCON temple, the Krishna Balaram Mandir, is famed for its beautiful worship, its kirtan and the peace of its grounds, and it keeps a morning and an evening darshan with a midday break, so it is best seen in those windows. Prem Mandir, the great white marble temple of love built by Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj, is open through much of the day and is at its most magical in the evening, when it is lit in changing colours and the musical fountain plays. So a lovely plan is to take the ISKCON darshan in the morning or the late afternoon, and to be at Prem Mandir for the evening illumination, the two temples framing your Vrindavan day. Where they sit in Vrindavan

It helps to picture where these two temples lie on the map of Vrindavan. Both stand on the newer western side of the town, towards Chhatikara and the road to the highway, away from the crowded old town by the Yamuna where the ancient temples such as Banke Bihari are found. This is the modern temple quarter, where the great new temples, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and the towering Chandrodaya temple nearby, have room for their large grounds and their parking. So when you plan your Vrindavan day, think of it in two parts: the old town temples, walked on foot, and this western cluster of great temples, reached and joined by road. The honest bit

Honest words on getting between Prem Mandir and ISKCON. The distance is tiny, barely a kilometre, so do not let any rickshaw driver persuade you it is far or charge you a large fare; agree to the small price first. Darshan at both temples is free, and no official VIP pass exists at either or anywhere in Braj, whatever a tout may say. Walking, keep to the main Sri Premanand Road, for some of the shortcut lanes are narrow and may be restricted or private. The real thing that takes time here is not the distance but the temples themselves, the crowds, the queues and the darshan and aarti timings, so plan your visit around those hours rather than the trivial journey between. And the evening illumination at Prem Mandir is not to be missed, so save it for last.
