About Rangji Mandir

Rangji Mandir, also called Sri Rangnath Ji Temple, is the largest temple in Vrindavan and the only one built in the South Indian Dravidian style. It was constructed between 1845 and 1851 by two wealthy brothers, Seth Govind Das and Seth Radha Krishna, under the guidance of their guru Sri Rangadeshik Swami, at a cost of some forty five lakh rupees of the time. Its design is inspired by the great Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple of Srirangam in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Vishnu resting on the serpent Sesha, together with Goddess Andal or Goda, the eighth century Vaishnava saint who composed the Tiruppavai hymns. It is a rare meeting of South and North Indian devotion in the heart of Braj.

Location and entry fee

Rangji Mandir is at Rangnath Mandir, Goda Vihar, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh 281121, in the heart of Vrindavan and easy to reach by auto or e-rickshaw. Entry is completely free and so is darshan. There is no entry fee and no VIP pass. The nearest railhead is Mathura Junction, about fourteen kilometres away and the nearest airport is Delhi.

What to see at Rangji Mandir

The temple is a marvel to walk through. Its towering seven storey Rajagopuram, the great South Indian gateway tower, rises over the town, richly carved; a five storey gopuram stands on the other side. Within are five concentric rectangular enclosures around the sanctum, two stone gates carved in the Jaipur style, a gold plated Dhwaja Stambha or flag pillar and a large sacred pond, the Pushkarni. Outside the western gate stands a fifty foot wooden chariot, brought out only once a year for the Brahmotsav festival. Take your time; the scale and detail reward a slow walk.

The Brahmotsav festival

The temple’s greatest days are the ten Brahmotsav, held in the month of Chait, around March and April and known locally as the Rath ka Mela. The deities are carried in a magnificent chariot procession, drawing huge crowds and here alone one may play Holi with the Lord. One honest point for foreign guests: at Rangji, as at some strict traditional temples, access to the innermost sanctum is reserved and non Hindu or non Indian visitors may be able to enter only as far as the courtyard or the outer gateways.
