What is Thakurani Ghat?

Thakurani Ghat is one of the principal ghats, the sacred stepped bathing places, of the Yamuna at Gokul, the land of Krishna’s infancy in the Mathura district. It is revered above all as the place where the goddess Yamuna herself, Yamuna Maharani, the great queen of the river, gave her divine darshan to Shri Vallabhacharya, the founder of the Pushti Marg; and it is from this darshan of the Thakurani, the divine lady, the goddess, that the ghat takes its name. For the Vaishnava devotees and especially for the followers of the Vallabh tradition, this is a place of the very first importance, for here some of the founding events of their path took place. The story: Vallabhacharya at Gokul

The story of Thakurani Ghat is one of the most beautiful in the tradition of the Pushti Marg. It is told that Shri Vallabhacharya, travelling across the land to spread the path of devotion, felt so strong a pull of the Lord’s grace that he left all else and came straight to Braj. Reaching the lovely bank of the Yamuna at Gokul, he asked the elders of the place about it and learned that the spot was famed as the khirak, the cowpen, of Nanda Baba, the very ground of Krishna’s infancy. There the acharya seated himself and beneath a shami tree he performed a week-long recitation, a saptah, of the Shrimad Bhagavat, the great scripture of Krishna’s glories. He installed the image of Thakur ji and began his loving worship and it was here, on this sacred ghat, that the great events unfolded that would give the ghat its name and its fame.

The darshan of the Lord and the Brahma Sambandh

One night, as Shri Vallabhacharya kept his loving worship at the ghat, the Lord Shri Krishna, pleased beyond measure by his devotion, appeared before him in the deep of the midnight in a form of surpassing beauty: crowned with the peacock feather, earrings glittering at his ears, the vaijayanti garland at his throat, the flute upon his lips, clad in yellow silk, his dark form radiant and his hair in soft curls, a beauty beyond all words. And the Lord, from the very border of his yellow garment, granted new life and grace to the acharya and gave him the sacred Brahma Sambandh, the mantra of initiation by which a soul is joined to God, commanding him to carry it into the world for the uplift of all souls. And the Lord gave this blessing too: that whomever Vallabhacharya should bring before him for the sake of the world’s deliverance, he the Lord would accept as his own. Having given this grace, the Lord vanished. This descent of the Lord and the giving of the Brahma Sambandh at Thakurani Ghat is among the most sacred events in the whole history of the Pushti Marg.

The Madhurashtakam and the Yamunashtakam

Thakurani Ghat is dear to all lovers of devotional poetry for another reason, for it was here, at this very spot on the Yamuna, that Shri Vallabhacharya composed two of the most beloved hymns in all of Sanatan Dharma. Here he sang the Madhurashtakam, the eight verses of sweetness, whose refrain, that everything of the Lord of sweetness is sweet, his lips and his face and his eyes and his smile and his heart and his walk, all sweet, is chanted with love across the world to this day. And here too he composed the Yamunashtakam, the eight verses in praise of the goddess Yamuna, the river of Braj, hymning her as the giver of all perfection and the bearer of the grace of Krishna’s feet. That these two immortal hymns were born here, on the bank of the Yamuna at Gokul, makes Thakurani Ghat a place of pilgrimage for every lover of the devotional world.

The first Brahma Sambandh and the Yamuna’s darshan

Two further events of the first importance took place here. It was at Thakurani Ghat that Shri Vallabhacharya gave the very first Brahma Sambandh initiation, the diksha he had received from the Lord, to his dear disciple Shri Damodar Das Harsani, so beginning the line of grace that continues in the Pushti Marg to this day. And it is here, above all, that the goddess Yamuna Maharani gave her darshan to the acharya, blessing him upon her sacred bank, the event from which the ghat takes its very name of Thakurani, the goddess. A Shrinathji temple stands at the ghat, marking these sacred happenings and for the followers of the Vallabh tradition to stand here is to stand at one of the founding places of their faith. The Yamuna at Thakurani Ghat

Like all the ghats of Gokul, Thakurani Ghat is a place of the sacred Yamuna, the river revered as Yamuna Maharani, the goddess herself, whom Vallabhacharya hymned in the Yamunashtakam upon this very bank and who gave her darshan here. To sit on the steps of the ghat, by the flowing water, in the peace of Gokul, is one of the tender joys of a pilgrimage here and the devout offer their prayers to the goddess and take her sacred water upon their heads. The ghat is loveliest in the cool of the early morning and the evening and the whole atmosphere is one of deep and quiet devotion, saturated with the memory of the great acharya and the grace he received here.

Location and how to reach Thakurani Ghat

Thakurani Ghat lies on the Yamuna at Gokul, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, in the land of Krishna’s infancy across the river from Mathura city. Gokul is about ten to fifteen kilometres from Mathura by road, an easy drive of half an hour or a little more and the ghat sits among the other holy places of Gokul. The nearest railway junction is Mathura, well connected across the country, about an hour from Agra and three to four hours from Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway; the nearest airport is Delhi, about a hundred and sixty kilometres away. Most pilgrims visit as part of a day in Gokul and Mahaban and a private car is much the easiest way. The table gives the distances.

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit and within the day the early morning and the evening are the loveliest and most peaceful times at the ghat, by the water. The great days here are the festivals of the Pushti Marg and of Krishna, above all Janmashtami and the days around it, when Gokul, the land of Krishna’s birth home, is at its most joyful and the appearance day of Shri Vallabhacharya.
