Take an early morning darshan at Banke Bihari
The single best thing to do in Vrindavan is to stand before Banke Bihari, its most beloved deity, in the calm of the early morning before the crowds build. It is a moment of pure devotion, free and open to all. Go at the opening, keep your phone away and let the darshan be unhurried. Our guide to Banke Bihari temple covers its timings and the calm way in.
Join the evening Yamuna aarti
As dusk falls, the ghats of the Yamuna come alive with the evening aarti, lamps circling to the sound of bells and song, their reflections trembling on the water. At Vishram Ghat in Mathura and Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan, it is one of the most moving free experiences in Braj. Arrive a little early, find a place on the steps and simply be present.
See the Prem Mandir light show after dark
After dark, the marble of Prem Mandir glows under changing coloured lights and the fountains and carvings tell the stories of Radha and Krishna. It is a modern wonder amid the ancient town and a favourite of families and children. Entry is free; simply come in the evening and let the marble shine.
Walk the Govardhan parikrama
For the truly devout, the Govardhan parikrama is the great act of Braj: a circuit on foot around the holy hill that Krishna lifted, some twenty one kilometres in full or a shorter stretch for most. Remember the honest rule of Braj, the hill is circled, never climbed. Start early, walk barefoot if you wish and feel the devotion of the pilgrims around you.
Hear the kirtan, samaj gayan and satsang
Braj is a land of song. In the ashrams and temples you can hear kirtan and the old devotional samaj gayan and many visitors seek the satsang of living saints. The discourses of Premanand Maharaj draw pilgrims from across the world. Sit quietly, listen and let the sound carry you; this is Braj at its most tender.
Feel the mystery of Nidhivan
Nidhivan is the atmospheric grove where, it is cherished, Krishna and the gopis perform the raas each night. It is a belief held with deep love, not a documented fact and it is worth telling plainly. By day the grove is quiet and haunting, its low twisted trees unlike anywhere else. Our guide to Nidhivan and Seva Kunj covers the timings and the story.
Take darshan at Krishna's birthplace
Across in Mathura, the Krishna Janmabhoomi is the birthplace of Krishna, standing on the site of the prison of Kansa. To take darshan here, at the very spot of his birth, is the heart of a Mathura visit. Nearby, the grand Dwarkadhish Temple and the ghats complete the town. Our guide to the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura tells its story.
Taste the food and famous sweets
Braj is pure vegetarian and its food is part of the joy: hot kachoris and aloo sabzi in the morning, simple thalis and above all the famous sweets, the pedas of Mathura, malpua and ghevar. Buy a box of pedas to carry home; it is the taste of the pilgrimage. Eating here is itself a devotional pleasure.
Time it around the festivals
If you can, time your visit for a festival, when Braj is at its most alive. Holi here is world famous, spread over many days and Janmashtami, Radha Ashtami and Sharad Purnima fill the towns with colour, song and light. They are magnificent but very crowded, so plan well. Our guide to the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan lays out the festival calendar.
The honest bit
The best things to do here are almost all free and that is the truth worth holding. Every temple darshan, every aarti, every parikrama costs nothing; no one should charge you for darshan or sell you a VIP pass, for there is no official VIP pass for Banke Bihari. Banke Bihari has no daily Mangala Aarti, only rare festival days, while ISKCON holds a genuine one. Nidhivan's night raas is a cherished belief, not a documented fact and the Yamuna is revered and, honestly, polluted. Met plainly, Braj gives more than any embellishment could.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar and I have guided Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews. We WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Knowing the best things to do is one thing; doing them at the right hour, in the right order, past the crowds and the touts, is another and that is where a local guide earns their place. We time your darshan, your aarti and your parikrama so each is at its finest. This is our home and its best moments are ours to share.
Tip from Gurudutt: do fewer things, more slowly. One unhurried morning darshan and one quiet evening aarti will move you to more than a dozen sights. In Braj, presence is the point, not the checklist.
