Braj is a vegetarian land
Mathura and Vrindavan are deeply tied to Krishna and the food reflects that devotion. Much of it is sattvic, cooked without onion or garlic, especially the prasad and the meals near the temples . Meat and alcohol are not part of the temple towns. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and I will tell you plainly: come hungry for simple, pure vegetarian food, because that is the soul of Braj cooking.

What to eat in Mathura and Vrindavan
Mathura peda, the soft milk sweet the town is famous for, often taken home as prasad.
Kachori with sabzi, a hearty Braj breakfast.
Chaat and aloo tikki in the bazaars.
Thali meals, simple, filling and usually sattvic near the temples.
Lassi and milk sweets, since Braj is dairy country.
🪔 Tip from Gurudutt: buy your Mathura peda from a busy, well-known shop where the turnover is high, so it is fresh. The quietest stall is not always the cleanest. I point you to the trusted names.
What to eat in Agra
Agra offers more variety, still with plenty of vegetarian choice. The city is known for petha, the translucent ash gourd sweet, in many flavours and you will find good vegetarian thalis and North Indian food across the city. If you want a wider menu after the simpler temple food of Braj, Agra is the place for it.
Eating clean and safe
Choose busy places with high turnover, prefer freshly cooked hot food and drink sealed or filtered water. The Yamuna is sacred and also polluted, so stick to bottled or filtered water rather than untreated sources. Meals are usually not bundled into the package, because food in Braj is plentiful and cheap, but tell me if you want meals arranged and I add them to the quote.
