Ahmedabad, the great city of Gujarat and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna, lie a long way apart, some 900 km across Rajasthan, a journey of many hours by road. For the many devotees of Krishna in Gujarat, though, the land of the Lord's childhood is well worth the trip and there are comfortable ways to make it. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Ahmedabad to Vrindavan distance, the routes and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Ahmedabad to Vrindavan is about 898 to 946 km, roughly 15 to 18 hours by road.

  • The fastest routes use NH 27 or the new NE 4 expressway, about 15 hours across Rajasthan.

  • It is a very long journey, so flying or the train is usually far better than driving.

  • Most travellers fly Ahmedabad to Delhi (about 1.5 hours), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj.

  • Overnight trains run from Ahmedabad towards Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj.

  • The route crosses Rajasthan through the Udaipur region; Agra and the Taj lie near the northern end.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Ahmedabad and across Gujarat, drawn to Krishna's land and I help them plan the long journey in the easiest way. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and flight options, the best way to travel over such a long distance and the last leg into Vrindavan.

Ahmedabad to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Ahmedabad to Vrindavan is about 898 to 946 km and the drive takes roughly 15 to 18 hours depending on the route, across Rajasthan through the Udaipur region. There are three main ways.

The NH 27 route is the quickest at about 15 hours, running north through Udaipur and Rajasthan; the NE 4 and NH 21 route is similar in time. This is a very long drive, so if you do take the road, break it overnight, perhaps at Udaipur, a lovely place to rest. A car that knows the roads makes the long journey easier; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Vrindavan to Ahmedabad distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Vrindavan to Ahmedabad, is much the same, about 898 to 913 km and 15 to 18.5 hours, through the Udaipur region of Rajasthan. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Ahmedabad to Vrindavan by train

For so long a journey, the train is a comfortable and popular choice and it spares you the long drive. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. Direct trains run from Ahmedabad towards Mathura and an overnight journey is a restful way to cover the distance.

  • Where to board: trains run from Ahmedabad Junction towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 13 to 16 hours depending on the service; overnight trains are ideal.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes and we can meet you.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Ahmedabad to Mathura ticket well in advance, especially in festival season.

Ahmedabad to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is the quickest and most popular way. Ahmedabad has a major international airport and the nearest airport to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km away. A flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi, about 1.5 hours, then a 3 to 3.5 hour drive to Vrindavan, is far quicker than the 15-hour road journey. For most travellers from Ahmedabad, flying via Delhi is the best way.

  • Ahmedabad has a major international airport with frequent flights to Delhi.

  • Nearest airport to Braj: Delhi, about 150 km away.

  • Fly Ahmedabad to Delhi (about 1.5 hours), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Vrindavan.

  • Flying via Delhi is far quicker than the long road journey and the usual choice.

Ahmedabad to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from Ahmedabad towards Udaipur, Jaipur and the Delhi and Agra side, taking around 16 to 18 hours and are the budget option. But they are long and tiring over such a distance, so a flight or an overnight train is far easier and worth the extra cost for most travellers.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. Flying to Delhi and driving on is by far the quickest; an overnight train is comfortable and good value; a private car is direct but very long and best broken overnight at Udaipur; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. Over this distance, flying via Delhi is usually the best, with the train a close second.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

If you do drive, this long journey is best broken overnight and Udaipur, the beautiful lake city of Rajasthan, sits on the route and makes a lovely stop. Nearer Braj, Agra with the Taj Mahal lies close to the northern end of the route, so many travellers pause there to add the Taj to their trip, a natural and beautiful stop on the way. Whether you fly, train or drive, plan the journey so you arrive rested for the darshan.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, the mysterious grove of Nidhivan and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot across Rajasthan for such a long drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • For this distance, fly Ahmedabad to Delhi and drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj; it is the quickest way.

  • An overnight train from Ahmedabad to Mathura Junction is a comfortable, good-value alternative.

  • If you drive, take the NH 27 route and break the journey overnight at Udaipur.

  • Add Agra's Taj near the end of the route and Udaipur on the way, if you wish.

  • Book trains, flights and hotels well ahead, especially in festival season.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather over such a long journey.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Ahmedabad to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Let me be plain: this is a very long trip, some 900 km and 15 hours or more by road, so please do not try to drive it in one stretch. For most travellers from Ahmedabad, flying to Delhi and driving on or taking an overnight train, is far easier and often no dearer once you count the fuel, the tolls and the strain of such a long drive. If you do drive, break it overnight, ideally at Udaipur. Distances and times are approximate and shift with traffic. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather break the journey or stay the night, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Ahmedabad and across Gujarat every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you fly, train or drive in, we meet you at Delhi airport, Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the trip, a natural stop near the route, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: over so long a distance, choose comfort and you will enjoy the darshan far more. Fly to Delhi and let us drive you the last stretch to Braj, arriving fresh for the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari or take a restful overnight train. And since Agra lies near the route, add the Taj at sunrise. Save your energy for the temples of Krishna's land, not the road and the long journey from Gujarat becomes a joyful pilgrimage rather than a tiring drive.

"Our Ahmedabad to Vrindavan trip with Experience My India was very well organized. Since the road journey is quite long, they recommended taking the train and arranged our local transfers from Mathura Junction. The driver was punctual, polite and knew the temple routes well. We had a peaceful darshan at Banke Bihari, Krishna Janmabhoomi and Prem Mandir."
