By road, the distance from Indore to Vrindavan is about 671 to 730 km and the drive takes roughly 10.5 to 13.5 hours depending on the route. The new NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, has transformed this journey. There are three main ways.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NE 4 (Delhi-Mumbai Expressway) | 671 km | About 10 hr 33 min |

The NE 4 route, on the smooth new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, is much the fastest, about 10.5 hours and the one I recommend. The Ujjain route is longer and slower, though it suits those wishing to take darshan at Mahakaleshwar on the way; the NH 52 and NH 46 route is a middle option. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Flying can shorten this long journey. Indore has a good airport (Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport) and the nearest major airport to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km away. A flight from Indore to Delhi, about 1.5 hours, then a 3 to 3.5 hour drive to Vrindavan, can be quicker than the 10.5-hour road journey, so for those short of time, flying via Delhi is a real option.

Indore to Vrindavan by bus
Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Indore towards Agra, Mathura and Delhi, taking around 12 to 14 hours, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan. It is cheaper than a car but long and tiring over such a distance and best for those travelling light and on a tight budget.
The best way to travel
The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. Flying to Delhi and driving on is the quickest; an overnight train is restful and good value; a private car on the NE 4 is comfortable and direct but long, best with a break; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.
Option | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Fly + car | 5 to 6 hr total | Fastest | Short of time; fly to Delhi, drive to Braj |
Train | 10 to 13 hr | Restful, good value | Comfortable overnight over this distance |
Private car (NE 4) | About 10.5 hr | Comfortable, direct | Groups; break the journey |
Bus | 12 to 14 hr | Basic, tiring | Tight budgets, travelling light |
A quick comparison. Over this distance, flying via Delhi or an overnight train is often easiest.
Breaking the journey and what to see on the way
This is a long drive, so plan a break or travel overnight on the NE 4. Pilgrims from Indore often begin with darshan at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, only about 55 km away, before heading north. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, sits near the northern end of the route, so many pause there to add the Taj to their Braj trip, a natural and beautiful stop on the way. Plan one or two easy breaks and the long drive passes comfortably.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, the oldest temple, Madan Mohan and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.
The best time to visit
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot for so long a drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. The honest bit
Honest words on the Indore to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. It is a genuinely long trip, but the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has made it far quicker, about ten and a half hours now rather than fourteen or more. Even so, do not drive it in one tired stretch: break it, travel overnight or take the train or a flight. Those short of time will often find flying to Delhi and driving on the quickest. Distances and times are approximate and shift with traffic, so choose your road by the day. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather break the journey or stay the night, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Indore and across Madhya Pradesh every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive, train or fly in, we meet you at Mathura Junction, Delhi or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the trip, a natural stop on the way, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: make the most of the new expressway and the route. If your heart is with Shiva as well as Krishna, begin at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, then take the fast NE 4 north and break the journey overnight so you arrive in Braj fresh for the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari. And since Agra lies near your route, pause for the Taj at sunrise, so one journey gives you Mahakaleshwar, the Taj and the darshan of Krishna.
