Nearly every visitor who comes to Vrindavan asks about the Taj, and rightly, because it is only an hour and a half away on an excellent road. But this is one journey where the distance is the easy part and the planning is everything, and I have lost count of the families who have driven to Agra on a Friday and found the gates shut. Here is the drive, and the two rules that govern the day. Vrindavan to Agra: the routes

Three routes run down to Agra, and the pattern will be familiar to anyone who drives in this region: the longest is the quickest.

The Yamuna Expressway is worth the extra twelve kilometres and the toll every time. It is a controlled access road with far fewer villages, junctions and slow vehicles than the national highway route, so the drive is not only quicker but considerably less tiring, which matters if you are starting before dawn.

Rule one: the Taj is closed on Fridays

This is the single most important thing on this page. The Taj Mahal does not admit visitors on Fridays. It is not a matter of shorter hours or a partial closure: the monument is shut for the day. Families drive down from Vrindavan, reach the gates and are turned away, and it happens every week.

Rule two: the Taj is ticketed

Every temple you will visit in Braj is free. There is no entry fee at Banke Bihari, at the Krishna Janmabhoomi, at Prem Mandir or anywhere else, and no official VIP pass exists at any of them. The Taj Mahal is the exception, and it is worth being clear about it before you go: it is a ticketed monument administered by the government, tickets are bought separately from your tour, and rates differ for Indian and foreign visitors, with a further charge if you wish to enter the main mausoleum. Buy online in advance where you can, and check the current rates rather than trusting an old figure, because they are revised from time to time. Agra Fort and the other monuments are ticketed separately again.

An honest word: no reputable operator can include the Taj ticket in a Braj package price and call it free, and any quote that blurs the two is one to question. We tell you plainly which parts of your trip cost money and which do not.

The one decision that shapes your day

The Taj is at its most beautiful at sunrise, when the marble takes the light and the crowds are thinnest. But Vrindavan’s temples are also at their best in the early morning, and you cannot have both on the same day. So choose:

• For the Taj at sunrise, leave Vrindavan in the dark, well before first light, and be at the gates as they open. You will trade your Vrindavan morning for it, and it is worth doing once.

• For both, in balance, take Banke Bihari at the morning opening, drive down after, and reach the Taj by mid morning. Busier and brighter, but you keep the darshan.

• For a gentler day, drive down mid morning, see the Taj and Agra Fort, and return to Vrindavan for the evening aarti and the lights at Prem Mandir.

Whichever you choose, an hour and a half each way means you can be back in Vrindavan the same night without rushing.

What else to see in Agra

Since you have made the drive, do not see only the Taj. Agra Fort, the great red sandstone seat of the Mughal emperors, is close by and repays a couple of hours. The tomb of Itmad ud Daulah, affectionately called the baby Taj, is smaller, quieter and to my eye more delicately worked than its famous neighbour. And Mehtab Bagh, the garden across the river, gives the finest sunset view of the Taj from the far bank, with almost none of the crowd. Each is ticketed separately.

The contrast worth noticing

There is something on this day that no itinerary quite explains. In the morning you may stand in a bare stone chamber at the Krishna Janmabhoomi or before a drawn curtain at Banke Bihari, where nothing is charged and nothing is grand, and by afternoon you are before the most photographed building on earth, built by an emperor for his wife. Braj is devotion without architecture; Agra is architecture without devotion. Seeing them in a single day teaches you something about both, and it is the reason I encourage pilgrims to make this drive even when they came only for Krishna.

How to travel

A private car is the sensible choice. The expressway drive is easy, the car waits while you are inside the monuments, and you keep control of your return time, which matters if you want the Vrindavan evening aarti. Public buses run but are slow and leave you dependent on autos at the Agra end. When to go

October to March is the comfortable season for both Braj and Agra, and the winter light on the marble is beautiful. Avoid the middle of the day from April onwards; the Taj complex has little shade and the stone throws heat. Winter fog can delay a sunrise visit in December and January, so if the morning is thick, do not race the expressway for it. And once again, not on a Friday. The honest bit

Honest words for this particular day. The Taj is closed on Fridays and ticketed, and those two facts matter more than the distance. Guides and touts outside the Agra gates are persistent and will quote high; agree everything in advance or go with your own guide. Photography is restricted inside the mausoleum itself. Back in Braj, by contrast, every darshan is free and there is no official VIP pass anywhere, whatever anyone offers. The Yamuna, which you will see from both Vrindavan's ghats and Mehtab Bagh, is revered and, honestly, polluted. And the expressway carries tolls, so keep a working tag or cash.
