What is Yugal Ghat?

Yugal Ghat is one of the sacred ghats, the stepped bathing places, along the bank of the holy Yamuna in Vrindavan and its name reveals its heart: Yugal means the pair, the couple and here it means the Divine Couple, Shri Radha and Shri Krishna, worshipped together as one. The ghat is dedicated to the Yugal, the eternal pair and to their Yugal Leela, the sweet and playful pastimes of their divine love. Radha Ashtami, the birthday of Radha, is dear here above all, as the day of the beloved of the Yugal; the Jhulan Yatra, the swing festival of the monsoon, when Radha and Krishna are placed on flower swings, is beautiful; the Sharad Purnima, the autumn full moon of the Maharaas, is lovely by the water; and Holi and the devotional month of Kartik fill the ghat with joy. On these days the ghat is decorated with flowers, lamps and colourful rangoli and bhajans glorifying the Yugal Jodi, the divine pair, echo across the water, turning the whole place into a celebration. Location and how to reach Yugal Ghat

Yugal Ghat lies on the bank of the Yamuna in Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, among the line of sacred ghats along the river that the Vrindavan parikrama follows. Vrindavan is about twelve to fifteen kilometres from Mathura, the nearest railway junction and about a hundred and eighty kilometres from Delhi, the nearest airport, by the Yamuna Expressway. Within Vrindavan the ghat is best reached on foot or by cycle rickshaw through the old town lanes or along the riverside parikrama path, for the narrow ways near the river are not for large vehicles. The ghats of Vrindavan

When to visit

The cool months of October to March are the most comfortable for a visit and within the day the sunrise and the sunset are the loveliest and most atmospheric times at Yugal Ghat, when the golden light glows on the Yamuna and the kirtans rise from the ghats. The great festival days, Radha Ashtami, Jhulan Yatra, Sharad Purnima, Holi and Kartik, are the most vibrant but the most crowded. This is a quiet ghat of meditation and devotion, not a grand monument or a spectacle, so come in stillness and an unhurried spirit, sit on the steps and be at peace and its sweetness will reach you. The Yamuna is revered as a goddess and, honestly, is polluted, so honour the river and take her water on your head as aachman, but do not take a careless full dip, especially with children. The steps by the water can be slippery, so tread with care. It lies among the narrow riverside lanes, best reached on foot or by rickshaw, not by a large vehicle.
